The Puerto Rican movie Extra Terrestres was shown in New York State with the translated title Extra-Terrestrials (2016). It was written and directed by Carla Cavina. (The movie is in Spanish, with English subtitles.)
Extra-Terrestrials is a family drama. The family is ruled by the authoritarian father, Arcadio. He is a successful agribusinessman. However, his business is being threatened by new (unfair) laws from the USDA, and local bribery and corruption. The part is played very well by Sunshine Logroño.
Arcadio's daughter, Teresa (Marisé Alvarez) left for the university against her father's wishes. Now, seven years later, she's home, as a successful astrophysicist.
Everyone in the family has a secret. Teresa's secret is that she has a lesbian lover. She is waiting for the "right time" to tell her family. Even though there's hardly ever a "right time" for revelations, this probably is the wrong time, because the family may go bankrupt within a few days.
The movie has a complicated plot, with many subplots, and that makes it interesting. One of the subplots is that Teresa's nephew, Andrés, has Asperger's syndrome. This role is played extremely well by Mauricio Alemañy. Although Alemañy is young, he's already an experienced actor. It's impressive--but no surprise--that he performs very well in the part.
We saw this film at Rochester's excellent Little Theatre. It was shown as part of the wonderful ImageOut Rochester LGBT festival. It will work well enough on the small screen. It's worth seeking out and watching.
