After 20 years, Participant is shutting down.
Founder Jeff Skoll announced the news in a note to staff Tuesday, writing, “after much reflection, I have made the very difficult decision to wind down company operations.” During its run, the company was behind best picture winners Green Book and Moonlight, and docs such as An Inconvenient Truth and Rbg.
EBay co-founder Skoll founded the company in 2004 with a dual mission of making money and inspiring social change through entertainment (the company later moved into television and other ventures). It has helped produce and finance a slew of high-profile awards contenders. Its films won 21 Oscars and its series won 18 Emmys. It earned more than $3.3 billion at the box office. Veteran studio executive David Linde has been running Participant since 2016; previous execs involved in Participant include Ricky Strauss.
It was heavily involved in the nonfiction space, with its shuttering sure to send ripples through that community.

Participant, the media company behind films like “Spotlight,” “Green Book,” “Roma,” and many more, is shutting its doors after 20 years in operation.
Jeff Skoll, who founded the company in 2004, informed the staff in a memo (obtained by IndieWire) that Participant would “wind down company operations.”
Nearly all of Participant’s roughly 100 staffers are being let go with no new content or production in the works. Only Participant’s library of 135 films remaining.
“I founded Participant with the mission of creating world-class content that inspires positive social change, prioritizing impact alongside commercial sustainability,” Skoll wrote. “Since then, the entertainment industry has seen revolutionary changes in how content is created, distributed and consumed.”
Participant’s 135 titles, half of them documentaries and also including five series, have earned $3.3 billion at the global box office. Participant has produced two Best Picture winners and earned 21 Oscars total from 86 nominations, as well as 18 Emmys on 62 nominations.

Destin Daniel Cretton, the director of Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” has dropped out of directing “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,” an individual with knowledge told IndieWire.
Cretton remains attached to direct the sequel to “Shang-Chi” and is also at work as the co-creator of the Disney+ series “Wonder Man” also for Marvel Studios. He’s an executive producer on the show and directed the first two episodes.
The individual says Cretton’s exit is amicable. Cretton will resume shooting “Wonder Man” after Thanksgiving, and as Deadline first reported, he’s even said to be in talks to direct future Marvel movies.

Destin Daniel Cretton is no longer directing “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,” TheWrap has learned. While he will not helm the next big MCU team-up flick, he remains at work on the Disney+ series “Wonder Man.” And fear not, he’s also still developing a sequel to “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.”
The move comes days after Marvel and the Walt Disney Company take stock of the poor performance of “The Marvels,” which earned just $110 million in its global debut amid mixed reviews and comparatively indifferent word-of-mouth.
The Brie Larson-fronted superhero sequel was not Marvel Studios’ first underperformer amid the 33-film, 15.5-year franchise. Heck, “The Incredible Hulk” earned $265 million on a $150 million budget a month after “Iron Man” launched the MCU in the summer of 2008. However, the release comes on the heels of comparatively underperforming titles like “Eternals” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” along with softer-than-usual...

Exclusive: Deadline hears that filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton has decided to step away as director of Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Kang Dynasty to focus on his other Marvel projects. This is an amicable exit, I understand, as Cretton remains fully in the Marvel Studios family.

Note that Avengers: Kang Dynasty is far on the theatrical release schedule, dated to kick off summer on May 1, 2026. The movie will precede Avengers: Secret Wars on May 7, 2027 which will wrap up the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 6 features.

In the years since "Avengers: Endgame" brought a close to the "Infinity Saga", the superhero studio quickly pivoted to replacing its original line-up with a host of new and relatively lesser-known figures. 2021's "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" led the charge of fresh faces that also included the ensemble cast of "Eternals," Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova in "Black Widow," Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez in "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness," and the team-up between Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) with Brie Larson's Carol Danvers in "The Marvels." Are these characters meant to ring in the next generation of Avengers (or, in Yelena's case, Thunderbolts)? That appears to be the plan, but with the next couple of major crossover movies already spoken for (hint: these include "Avengers: The Kang Dynasty" and "Avengers: Secret Wars"), Kevin Feige will be hard-pressed...

A standout turn from the Oscar winner anchors an entertaining throwback to 90s legal dramas based on an unlikely true story
Based in the mid-90s, Amazon’s robust legal drama The Burial also moves like a movie made during that exact time, in the very best way possible. The period was jam-packed with grand, dad-pleasing films taking place in the courtroom, predominantly based on books by John Grisham, perfectly tailored to big stars seeking a way to show off their argumentative skills, an actors’ showcase that at the time couldn’t be topped.
Here it’s the turn of Jamie Foxx, the sort of big, charismatic movie star it’s become too easy to underestimate as it’s become so rare for us to see him operating at his very best. The last few years have given him precious few chances outside of a string of rote Netflix action...

Exclusive: Negeen Yazdi, Senior Vice President, Film Development & Production at Fifth Season, is departing the company. The well-liked veteran exec has been with Fifth Season (formerly known as Endeavor Content) for the past six years, helping to build its film slate and managing the film development team alongside Dan Guando. Deadline understands that her departure is amicable and that she will remain attached to select projects in an executive producer capacity. It is also understood this is unrelated to the recent staff cuts at Fifth Season, which were spurred on as a result of the impact of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
Yazdi, who is known for her taste and filmmaker relationships, championed such Fifth Season pictures as John Carney’s Flora and Son, and the Academy Award-nominated The Lost Daughter from Maggie Gyllenhaal. Across her tenure, she helped helped build a robust pipeline of projects which led...

Sofia Coppola and Michael B. Jordan will be receiving honors at this year’s Academy of Motion Pictures Museum gala alongside Meryl Streep and Oprah Winfrey. The event, scheduled for October 14, has permission to proceed from SAG-AFTRA and WGA even if either union remains on strike.
Jordan, the star of “Creed,” “Fruitvale Nation,” “Black Panther” and “Just Mercy,” will receive the Vantage Award. This honor notes emerging artists or scholars working to challenge and contextualize dominant narratives around film.
Sofia Coppola will receive the Visionary Award, noting an artist/scholar whose innovations have advanced the art form of cinema. Her next film, “Priscilla,” debuts at next month’s Venice Film Festival.
Three-time Oscar winner and 21-time nominee Meryl Streep will receive the Icon Award, noting the actress’s notable worldwide influence.
Oprah Winfrey, whose resume needs no reminder, will receive the Pillar Award for leadership and support for the Academy Museum.

Max’s first full month without ‘HBO’ in its rebranded title has a selection that kicks off summer 2023 in fine fashion. Three of the four iterations of “A Star Is Born,” including the most recent remake starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, are streaming on Max in June. The 1954 and 1976 films land June 1, while the 2018 version arrives June 8.
To prepare for Margot Robbie’s performance in “Barbie” come July, one could watch one of her more intense roles as Tonya Harding in “I, Tonya” (2017). For some lighter summer watches, viewers might consider “Dolphin Tale” (2010), “Grease” (1978), “Hairspray” (2007) or “Tooth Fairy” (2010).
“Magic Mike’s Last Dance” (2023) starring Channing Tatum and Salma Hayek Pinault lands at Max after its theatrical release in February this year. Another major theatrical release from 2022, “Avatar: The Way of Water” (2022), swims onto the streamer starting June 7.

HBO Max is no more. In its place are…HBO and Max. Warner Bros. Discovery’s big change to its premier streaming service was simply to take the “HBO” off of the name “HBO Max,” leaving just “Max.” But in announcing its list of new releases for Max in June 2023, Warner is highlighting all of the HBO content anyway. So here is everything you can expect to find on Max (including every new HBO show) this month.
Even though June 2023 is the first full month of Max’s existence without the helpful “HBO” modifier in front of it, literally all of its major original offerings are thanks to the pay cable network. June 4 sees the premiere of The Idol, the controversial TV project starring The Weeknd and written by Euphoria‘s Sam Levinson. After that, season 3 of Danny McBride evangelical comedy The Righteous Gemstones premieres on June 18. That will be...

“The English” is hoping for a successful Emmys season coming up, with the show on the precipice for a Best Limited Series bid as well as a Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor nomination for Chaske Spencer, while Emily Blunt is odds-on to be cited in the lead actress category. But they may be joined by the ever-reliable supporting player Rafe Spall, who emerged from Amazon Prime Video’s sweeping western series as one of the best things about it — if not the best.
“The English,” by creator Hugo Blick, follows Blunt as Lady Cornelia Locke, who is on the hunt for revenge in a search for the man responsible for her son’s death. Along the way, she meets Spencer’s Eli Whipp/Wounded Wolf, who is on a quest of his own — to claim back the land he is owed for his service in the US Army. The...

Veda Tunstall remembers the first time film people started poking around her hometown asking questions, and it wasn’t for the documentary that became “Descendant.”
Tunstall, a subject in Margaret Brown’s movie about the search for a long-lost slave ship near a community called Africatown, says that years before Brown showed up, other filmmakers wanted to make their own movies about hunting for the Clotilda. That didn’t go well. The community’s needs were never in mind and the story being told wasn’t their own; it was the ship’s.
The investment of time and attention that Brown and production company Participant put into “Descendant” felt different. The film also follows actual descendants who live in Africatown and examines how their ancestors’ actions can be traced across generations. The search for the slave ship was only half the story.

Macro, the multicultural film and TV studio as well as brand marketing agency founded by former WME partner Charles D. King, is taking on new outside financing from investment banks and asset managers to fuel its entertainment ambitions.
The New York-based investment giant BlackRock is leading a $90 million raise for Macro, with Harbourview Equity Partners and Goldman Sachs Asset Management participating in the round, the company said March 6. The capital infusion is the first major fundraising haul since the multimedia company took $150 million in equity and debt from investors including Laurene Powell Jobs’ Emerson Collective, the Ford Foundation, W.K. Kellogg Foundation and more in 2017, two years after its initial launch.
BlackRock’s backing arrives through its BlackRock Impact Opportunities Fund, which targets investment in companies owned or led by individuals from underrepresented communities. “In particular, we will markedly expand our efforts in the development and ownership of IP, strengthen our...

The power of a wide theatrical release was realized this weekend by streamer Amazon in its pivot back to the big screen with MGM/United Artists Releasing’s Creed III. It easily minted the best opening ever for the Seattle-based parent, as well as for the Rocky franchise, with $58.6M domestic, $100.4M worldwide.
While Amazon has snapped up some tentpole movies during the pandemic for the service — i.e. Paramount’s Coming 2 America and Skydance’s The Tomorrow War — Creed III repped a big commitment by them for the big screen following their $8.45 billion purchase of MGM back in May 2021.
Talk about downstream revenues here: Creed III was made for $75M before P&a, and is easily poised to profit. Kudos to Prime Video and Amazon Studios SVP Mike Hopkins and Amazon Studios Head Jen Salke for keeping in place MGM’s distribution boss Erik Lomis and theatrical marketing apparatus of Gerry Rich,...

The “Creed” series, like the “Rocky” franchise before it, has built an emotional language out of the way that the camera moves, the sound echoes, the editing balances perspective, and the score weaves in and out of the ring. But that’s not the reason director Michael B. Jordan, who stars as Adonis Creed, describes “Creed III” as quadrilingual.
“We have English. We have Spanish. We have Asl. And then we have the fighting language we explore [in the final fight],” Jordan told IndieWire during a recent interview. American Sign Language has always been baked into the DNA of the Creed films. Bianca Creed (Tessa Thompson) lives with progressive hearing loss and wears a hearing aid, and the question looming over “Creed II” was whether their daughter, Amara (Mila Davis-Kent), would be hard of hearing.
The third film embraces Amara’s loss of hearing, and the scenes between father and daughter — who is herself...

It’s just before noon in early February and Michael B. Jordan is settling into a director’s chair on the other end of a Zoom connection. He’s in Mexico City, preparing for one of the biggest nights of his life — the world premiere of his directorial debut, “Creed III” — an event that happens to coincide with Jordan’s 36th birthday.
“I’ve got my first movie premiere for a movie I directed. What bigger celebration can happen?” Jordan asks, thinking ahead to the frenzied fans who will await him on the red carpet later that evening. “It’s kind of crazy. I’m very grateful. I’ve had birthday parties, I’ve done my fair share, but this is something special.”
The Mexico City stop kicked off a promotional tour that has taken Jordan all over the world. There were appearances in Paris, London — where he was joined by his co-stars Tessa Thompson,...

Michael B. Jordan is “corny” no more.
The “Creed III” director-star recognized a former classmate on the red carpet for the film’s premiere. “Morning Hustle” host Lore’l attended high school with Jordan in Newark, New Jersey, and previously admitted to teasing Jordan on the “Undressing Room” podcast.
“To be honest with you, we teased him all the damn time because his name was Michael Jordan. Let’s start there – and he was no Michael Jordan,” Lore’l said (via The Independent). “And he also would come to school with a headshot. We lived in Newark; that’s the hood. We would make fun of him like, ‘What are you going to do with your stupid headshot?’ And now look at him.”
Lore’l’s co-host Dominique added that Jordan seemed like a “nice, corny guy.”
“You know what I really think deep down inside? I think that Michael B.

Fifth Season chief operating officer Tim Robinson has exited the company formerly known as Endeavor Content, Variety has confirmed.
Robinson’s departure, which comes after four years at Fifth Season, is an amicable decision between the exec and leadership and he’s exploring new opportunities.
Currently, Robinson’s COO duties are being handled internally.
During his time as COO of Fifth Season, Robinson played an important role in the production company’s 2022 sale to South Korea’s Cj Enm from former parent Endeavor, and its recent rebranding to Fifth Season.
Run by co-CEOs Graham Taylor and Chris Rice, Fifth Season was founded as Endeavor Content in 2017 from production, sales and distribution assets within Endeavor, WME and Img. Last year, Endeavor Content was spun out of Endeavor, which retains a 20 stake in the prodco valued at approximately 1 billion. Korean media giant Cj purchased an 80 stake in Fifth Season.
