Back when Unfriended was still going by the title of Cybernatural, director Leo Gabriadze said he came onto the project because he was attracted to the story’s subject matter. Nelson Greaves’ script demonstrated how personal harassment had since changed in the digital age; in particular those younger people whose torment went beyond the classroom. The internet had not only made a bully’s reach greater but also unavoidable. And in true horror fashion, Unfriended provided an unsettling portrayal of victimhood as well as sadistic retribution from beyond the grave.
Unfriended immediately broke tradition by staying close to home as opposed to traveling to the deep, dark woods or anywhere else teens tend to go and die in horror. More unusual was the unexciting premise of these characters video-chatting all night instead of meeting in person at an ominous social event of some kind. After years of critics reproaching the...

Plot: The high-profile case of serial killer Ludovic Chevalier has just gone to trial, and Kelly-Anne is obsessed. When reality blurs with her morbid fantasies, she goes down a dark path to seek the final piece of the puzzle: the missing video of a murdered 13-year-old girl, to whom Kelly-Anne bears a disturbing resemblance.
Review: There’s a certain level of expectation present when Fantasia selects the opening film for their festival. It sets the tone for the rest of the lineup of films so my hopes for Red Rooms were very high. Add to that the fact that the French (even of the Canadian variety) know how to do horror like no other, and I was very excited. Red Rooms hits a nerve almost immediately, diving deep into the trial of serial killer, Ludovic Chevalier. They set up the evidence in such a disturbing way, all without showing you anything.

“The enigma is that my body simultaneously sees and is seen. That which looks at all things can also look at itself and recognize, in what it sees, the ‘other side’ of its power of looking. It sees itself seeing; it touches itself touching; it is visible and sensible for itself… It is a self… that is caught up in things, that has a front and a back, a past and a future…”—Maurice Merleau-Ponty, “Eye and Mind”Jane Schoenbrun’s We’re All Going to the World’s Fair opens with a teenage girl (Anna Cobb) sitting at her bedroom desk, snacking absentmindedly on a packet of string cheese. Eventually she sits up, looks straight into the camera, and says, “Hey guys, Casey here. Today I’m gonna be taking the World’s Fair Challenge.” We later hear this described as the “internet’s scariest online horror game,” but for now...

Despite the dependency that people have on the internet and computers, a dependency that continues to grow by the year, there are plenty of movies and shows that make it clear that such a dependency comes with a great number of risks that aren’t wise to ignore. This is made rather evident when Matias, the leading character in this movie, finds a laptop in the lost and found of an internet cafe and takes it home to work with a new app that will allow him to better communicate with his deaf girlfriend, Amaya. As he speaks to Amaya and

Below, we have the official announcement that The Overlook Film Festival will return to its in-person format in 2022 (with a vaccine and mask policy in place) and that festival passes are now on sale.

Today brings more casting news for "The Continental," the upcoming miniseries set in the same universe as the "John Wick" films. We recently learned that Mel Gibson is set to take part in the show, which hails from Lionsgate and Starz, though that decision was met with some backlash, for obvious reasons. Setting that aside for a moment, it has been revealed who will be playing a young Winston in the prequel.
According to Variety, the series has enlisted Colin Woodell to take on a younger version of the role played by...

The “John Wick” prequel series at Starz, “The Continental,” has cast Colin Woodell in the lead role, Variety has learned.
Woodell will star as a young Winston Scott, the character played in the film franchise by Ian McShane. “The Continental” will explore the origin behind the titular hotel-for-assassins through the eyes and actions of Scott, who is dragged into the Hell-scape of a 1975 New York City to face a past he thought he’d left behind. Winston charts a deadly course through the New York’s mysterious underworld in a harrowing attempt to seize the iconic hotel, which serves as the meeting point for the world’s most dangerous criminals.
Woodell is now the second cast member announced for the series. It was previously announced that Mel Gibson would appear as a new character named Cormac.

The summer movie season continues on its road to recovery and normalcy, with four new wide releases hitting screens. Still, studios are holding back their big guns for now, as roughly one-third of theaters remain closed and capacity restrictions remain in place at many locations. The past few months have shown promising box office results from films such as Godzilla vs. Kong, Mortal Kombat, and Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, but it may still take some time before the box office returns to its former glory, with the major test coming over Memorial Day weekend when Cruella and A Quiet Place Part II face off.
Coming in the first place this weekend will likely be Spiral, the ninth entry in the Saw franchise, this time with a new take that puts Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson in the lead roles. Rock also executive produced and worked on the story for the film,...

Buddy movies and road trip movies are two time-honored cinematic genres, and Half Brothers manages to disappoint in both of them. Given that Halloween is just around the corner, horror films and series are enjoying a successful run on Netflix right now. As well as The Haunting of Bly Manor and, um, Hubie Halloween, the service has been dusting off some recent classics, including a couple that perhaps didn’t get as much attention as they deserved on their initial release. 2014’s Internet-based flick Unfriended, which was just added to the streaming site this past week, is certainly one to catch up on, and has already broken into the Top 10 most-watched movies list on the platform.
Directed by Levan Gabriadze, Unfriended is unique in taking place almost completely through computer screens and follows a group of high schoolers who gradually realize that a supernatural presence is haunting them via their chats and social media pages, with ties to a suicide becoming clearer as the story progresses. In the early days of smartphone video, shooting something vertically amounted to sacrilege to many purists who believed only in landscape orientation. Snapchat and TikTok eroded that sentiment enough that the upcoming Quibi platform will let viewers watch mobile-only shows both vertically and horizontally. Now, pioneering filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov is taking it a step further: His upcoming $10 million film “V2. Escape From Hell” is a World War II drama shot with vertical framing and smartphone audiences in mind.
Deadline reports the movie will be the world’s first blockbuster shot in that orientation. Production starts next week on the Russian film, starring Pavel Priluchny as Mikhail Devyatayev, a captured Soviet pilot who leads an escape from a German concentration camp by hijacking an aircraft.

Even though their flagship show already has nine seasons under its belt, it looks like AMC is deadset on expanding and growing their TV adaptations of The Walking Dead, despite the fact that the Robert Kirkman-created comics ended earlier this month. To date, there are close to 200 episodes between the main series and Fear The Walking Dead, and AMC shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Unfortunately, plot details are scarce, though we know a bit of information about the cast, which includes Alexa Mansour,...

“Get Out” scene-stealer Betty Gabriel may have had her breakout moment as the film’s creepy housekeeper Georgina, but she’s been toiling away in the haunted horror Blumhouse for years now. “I guess I have an affinity towards darkness, the dark side,” she said. “The movies are very on the fringe. They live in a very dark place.”
It’s a far different life for herself than Gabriel had first imagined. Although she recalls acting in a church play and putting on skits as a child growing up on the East Coast, she never thought of herself as a performer. Instead, she envisioned working with animals and even earned a Bachelor’s degree in animal science at the Iowa State University.

Following last weekend's monster performance, led by Disney's Ralph Breaks the Internet and MGM's Creed II, this weekend sees just one new wide release in Screen Gems's latest horror The Possession of Hannah Grace, which means the story will remain with last weekend's top titles as 2018 continues its torrid pace. After delivering the second largest five-day Thanksgiving weekend opening ever, Disney's Ralph Breaks the Internet is looking at a second weekend at #1 and a domestic gross that should finish at or near $120 million come end of day Sunday. Right now we're expecting a second weekend drop right around -54% for a sophomore frame totaling $26 million or so. MGM's Creed II could face some competition for second in Universal and Illumination's The Grinch, but we're expecting it to edge out the animated title with a drop right around -50% for an $18 million second weekend...

Years before he produced “Halloween,” this year’s biggest horror hit, Ryan Turek was nowhere close to developing films: He was commenting on horror blogs’ message boards.
Turek moved to Los Angeles in 1999 with dreams of becoming a screenwriter. He never imagined masterminding a “Halloween” film that has grossed $76 million its opening weekend, breaking records in the process.
It’s a story of the unconventional way Blumhouse does business — and harnessing the power and passion of fandom into box-office dominance. The company hired Turek based on his passion, obsession and expertise on the horror genre, and proved they’d rather listen to a true fan than an executive who might not know horror.

Last weekend ended up being the worst overall weekend of the year so far with all films on Mojo's weekend chart totaling a mere $91.8 million with the top twelve grossing just over $81 million. This weekend, however, should find the top twelve alone combining to bring in over $100 million as the month is shaping up to be the second highest grossing September ever, just behind last year's record performance for the month. A pair of newcomers are expected to finish #1 and #2 for the weekend, beginning with Universal's comedy Night School followed by the Warner Bros. animated title Smallfoot. Additional new releases include Lionsgate's release of the CBS horror-thriller Hell Fest and Pinnacle Peak's Little Women opening in a moderate number of locations. Set to top the weekend box office is Universal's comedy Night School starring Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish. The film is set to debut in just over...

A Room with a Coconut ViewThe so-called ‘desktop movie,’ a film visually told predominantly or entirely through the setup of a computer screen, has had a couple of high-profile examples over the last few years. Among these are Nacho Vigalondo’s Open Windows (2014), Patrick Cederberg and Walter Woodman’s short Noah (2013), and, most notably in terms of mainstream success, Levan Gabriadze’s Unfriended (2014). 2018 would seem to be a major year for the genre, if you can call it a genre just yet, with the wide release of sequel Unfriended: Dark Web, Timur Bekmambetov’s Profile playing festivals, and now the release, through Sony, of Aneesh Chaganty’s Searching. It is worth noting that Bekmambetov also produced the two of those 2018 titles he didn’t direct, so there’s at least one benefactor devoted to making the form catch on. With the exception of something like Kevin B. Lee’s essay...

It’s a soft-looking set of releases in the UK this weekend, which will mean holdover studio fare such as Mamma Mia! August 2017 saw the worst grosses for the eighth month of the year in twenty years and the writing was on the wall very early with the disappointing debut of The Dark Tower to begin the month. While this weekend's crop of new releases didn't exactly light the box office on fire, with Disney's Christopher Robin debuting below expectations, the weekend's top twelve titles still finished 15% ahead of the the same weekend last year and featured a strong carryover weekend from Paramount's Mission: Impossible - Fallout. With an estimated $35 million, Mission: Impossible - Fallout finished atop the weekend box office for a second weekend in a row as the film's domestic cume now stands just shy of $125 million after ten days in release. The film's 42.8% second weekend drop is the second best sophomore effort in the franchise behind Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, which isn't quite an apples-to-apples comparison...

In a twist straight out of a movie, “The Equalizer 2” shot past “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” to steal the box office crown.
Going into the weekend, it looked like “Mamma Mia! 2” would easily debut at No. 1. Final numbers won’t come in until Monday, but weekend estimates show Sony’s “The Equalizer” sequel opened above estimates with $35.8 million when it launched in 3,388 locations, while Universal’s highly anticipated follow-up to “Mamma Mia!” debuted with $34.4 million from 3,317 screens.
“Equalizer 2,” the first sequel of Denzel Washington’s nearly four-decade long career, debuted overseas with $3.3 million in 11 international territories. In North America, “Equalizer 2” premiered ahead of its predecessor. 2014’s “The Equalizer” opened with $35 million and went on to generate $192 million worldwide, including $101 million domestically.

Universal’s “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” and Sony’s “The Equalizer 2” are both on their way to overshooting box office forecasts, with an estimated $39 million and $33.21 million, respectively.
“Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,” playing at 3,317 North American locations, had been pegged in the $30 million to $36 million corridor, while “The Equalizer 2” was estimated for a $27 million to $32 million range from 3,388 locations.
The original “Mamma Mia!” — based on the long-running London stage musical about Abba songs — opened with $27 million on the same weekend a decade ago and finished with $145 million domestically and $615 million worldwide on a $52 million budget.
The sequel film — which is also a prequel, telling the story of how Meryl Streep’s Donna met the three men Amanda Seyfried’s Sophie invited to her wedding in the 2008 film — stars most of the original cast, including Amanda Seyfried, Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgard, Colin Firth,...

Two new mid-budget sequels — Universal’s “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” and Sony’s “The Equalizer 2,” are on pace to beat expectations at the box office, with “Mamma Mia!” topping the charts with an estimated $39 million opening from 3,317 screens.
That opening tops the $27 million start for the first “Mamma Mia!,” even after inflation adjustment. The first film opened against “The Dark Knight” in 2008, yet still went on to have huge legs at the box office with $144 million domestic and $609 million worldwide, holding the record for the highest-grossing female directed film of all-time until “Wonder Woman” topped it last year. The sequel is performing better with critics with a 78 percent Rt score, while a mostly female audience gave it an A- on CinemaScore.

“Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” is heading for an impressive opening weekend in the $41 million range at 3,317 sites in North America, early estimates showed Friday.
Denzel Washington’s “The Equalizer 2” should finish second with a solid $33 million at 3,388 locations, followed by the second weekend of “Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation” with about $23 million. “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” danced to $3.4 million at the Thursday box office, while Sony’s “The Equalizer 2” took in $3.1 million at the previews.
In 2008, the original “Mamma Mia!” earned a modest $27 million opening weekend while serving as counter-programming to “The Dark Knight,” which opened the same weekend. (The adaptation of a London and Broadway stage hit eventually earned nearly $610 million worldwide on a $52 million budget.)
