From Toilets to Terror: The Making of Ghoulies (2015)

Of all the documentaries that Shout Factory! has put on their terrific releases, this here might very well be one of the best, which is somewhat shocking since the movie itself really isn't all that good. Producer Charles Band, composer Richard Band, make-up man John Vulich and actor Michael Des Barres are on hand to discuss the making of the movie and it's an incredibly entertaining 30-minutes. Charles Band gets the majority of the running time and he tells some hilarious stories about the making of the film. He starts off talking about how he and Stan Winston got an idea for the film but after Winston got too busy it wasn't going to be possible to do it so Band took GREMLINS and decided to do his own thing. What makes this featurette so great is that Band is given all the time to educate people on how these types of movies were made back in the 80's. He goes into great detail about how the movie got its money, how he sold it trying to find people willing to play it and the creative marketing campaign that turned the film into a hit before some controversy hit. I won't ruin what the controversy was for those who haven't seen the film but the story is downright hilarious. If you're a fan of GHOULIES you're really going to enjoy this documentary but I'd recommend it to those who hate the movie because of how great the stories are. This here is certainly a must-see for fans of horror.
