First off, I went into this film with relatively low expectations. I wondered how a movie where you watch a computer screen for 1.5 hours would hold my attention. Surprisingly, I can say that it actually held my attention and the more I watched it, the more the movie grew on me. The films tone definitely does not take itself too seriously, and the characters' conversations can be hilarious (and hilariously awful). That is not to say the acting is bad here, in fact it is a fairly accurate representation of how superficial teenagers of today's era talk and interact.
The scares and deaths are particularly shocking not only because of the graphic nature of the deaths, but because of their authenticity and realistic quality. In fact, I was surprised at how disturbing a few deaths were and I am not easily disturbed to be honest.
The best thing about this film is the way you receive information on a character through his/her actions online. Every click and sentence that a character types is interesting and reveals something about that particular character.
My one MAJOR issue with this film is it's lack of cinematic value. Since this is a low budget horror film, and I mean SUPER LOW BUDGET, there is very little attempt at any production value. It makes me miss all of the makeup, special effects, and production design that go into making a film with a budget more than two dollars (seriously, they could have made this film with one dime). I know Jason Blum is a mastermind of making a film with a small budget and making a huge profit, but I think this cross film crosses the line of low budget into filmmaking laziness.
Overall I will say that Unfriended is a clever horror film with a unique format (Skype) that will entertain the average horror fan from ages 14-30, especially technology users and gore hounds. However, this new format may be too silly, stagnant, and trendy for some, and it is predictable to some extent.
