Below expectations
abisio23 April 2017
There was some potential in this tale of four superheroes created by the Russian government during the Cold War; that have to stay hidden until needed; but the movie sadly has very very lazy writing and even poorer editing. The FX are acceptable (the last Avengers was not much better and cost 50 times more); but the characters are pure stock. Forced; unsympathetic and underwritten. Action scenes are not spectacular as they were supposed to be; and villain motivations (or goals) are not that clear.

In brief; perhaps next time with better production and writing they will make a better movie; but just one is just a curiosity.

It's really that bad
maskygen4 May 2017
I don't know why people are trying to say this movie is good, because it is not. First the good parts, the cinematic, music and special effects are pretty decent. And the bad, how can I put this, the movie has no pace, the way they start the team it's laughable, "wanna join? sure". The stiff face major blonde whatever struggles to show emotions and empathy, but it just makes you laugh at her failing to do so, and the list goes on and on, the acting is really terrible.

OK, we get it, small budget, but that doesn't mean the story, editing and acting has to be so low.

This could have been a good movie.
I_Ailurophile2 August 2021
'Guardians,' or 'Zashchitniki,' as the Russian title would have it, has a reputation that precedes it. I recall well watching the first trailer prior to its release, and being intrigued. I also remember how quickly and thoroughly the completed film was panned, across the board. Yet my curiosity could only be sated by seeing it for myself. More than anything else, I'm disappointed.

In both its writing and direction, 'Guardians' is direct and unsubtle to the point of absurdity. Every possible bit of exposition is delivered in the first few minutes, including opening credits that cement the nature of these superheroes and visualize their origin. This opening sequence is at once adequate in its purpose, while also perhaps too indiscreetly showing its hand - moviegoers don't actually want to see how the meat gets made, but we get the whole picture.

Dialogue and plot points are all ham-fisted and forthright beyond all reason, disallowing the cast any opportunity to exercise their craft or meaningfully inhabit their roles. Action sequences follow this bent while also being executed with such flawless perfection as to actively shred our suspension of disbelief. Every character has perfect knowledge of anything happening; just as there's no nuance in the picture for the audience to pick up on, there are not truly any secrets in the narrative for characters to discover.

Not one scene or emotional beat is given the chance to manifest, linger, and resolve of its own accord - I don't think I've ever seen another movie as forcefully, strenuously fast-paced as this. 'Guardians' does technically possess all those elements we would expect of a modern-day superhero film, but they are glossed over with such a slippery, waxy sheen that the picture blows right past them. It wouldn't be wrong to say this feels like a parody or caricature of a comic book flick, but perhaps more to the point, it's like this movie is a supercondensed microcosm of the genre. And that's a big problem, seeing as how this style of film is all about showing us how big, grand, and expansive the universe can be in all its possibilities.

From a technical standpoint, I think 'Guardians' is actually just fine. Makeup, hair, costume design and wardrobe, set design and decoration, art direction, and fight choreography all look swell as far a I'm concerned. I think the sound design is good, and the original music of composer Georgiy Zheryakov. On the other hand, like the action sequences, special effects and computer-generated visuals mostly have the opposite problem of the typical subpar B-movie: usually we anticipate effects that fail to blend seamlessly into the real world, as seen on camera, because of how poor they are. Here, the CGI is so carefully, lovingly rendered that it looks too unbelievably impeccable to seem real.

I don't generally like to bad-mouth actors in a film - after all, they can only work with the material they're given from the writer, and the instruction imparted by the director. Moreover, knowing nothing of the cast of 'Guardians,' I don't want to make any snap judgments. But I do think it's safe to say that Andrei Gavrilov's screenplay and Sarik Andreasyan's direction conspire to rob the actors of any opportunity to actually... well, act. The whole film moves so quickly - again, distinctly and pointedly bereft of all subtlety - that the cast seems to have no significant agency at all. We've seen what world-class actors are reduced to in the films of Uwe Boll; I have no specific reason to think this situation is any different.

What's most remarkable, though, is that I really think 'Guardians' could have been a good movie. It could have been a good franchise, for that matter. As inelegantly as it's exhibited, the ideas in the narrative have fun potential that's locked away by the sheer aggressiveness and gracelessness of the film's construction. If Gavrilov, Andreasyan, and editor Georgiy Isaakyan allowed scenes, dialogue, and characters to breathe on their own, this wouldn't have been a 90-minute speed demon. For all the narrative content slammed through the funnel of its abbreviated runtime, 'Guardians' could and should have easily, actually, been 2 hours long at the bare minimum, or even a couple movies in and of itself - to say nothing of possibly developing additional features from the threads left dangling at this movie's conclusion. I would have liked to have learned more about these characters, and to have seen this cast flex their muscles. As it is, that just wasn't possible.

It's worth noting, in passing, that as viewers our attention is so enraptured with the indelicate presentation that by comparison we hardly notice the clear effort to ape successful Hollywood superhero features of the years preceding this production. The similarity of some scenes is unmistakable, and the Russian superheroes themselves are echoes of readily identifiable comic book properties. But in the time it takes us to process that recognition, we're already two scenes ahead, so the mimicry hardly even matters.

This is such an odd movie. I admire the concept, the narrative had potential, and I would have liked to see these ideas and this cast given real life. But for as preposterously direct, straightforward - and, once more, highly unsubtle - as the picture is, it feels like a warped facsimile of the superhero epic it could have been. It's a shame, really.

'Guardians,' or 'Zashchitniki,' is far from the worst movie you've ever going to see. Yet so unsound, deficient, and inhibitive is its build that one could be forgiven for thinking there was conscious intent by the film-makers to undercut their own production.

Recommended for curious, persevering, and open-minded audiences.

Just needed better storytellers, Cliché-Galore.
Silverleafs29 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Discarding the country of origin (like we all tend to do where art is concerned) I was extremely curious.

The camera quality is amazing, the special effects surprising and off & on stunning with beautiful actors portraying the "Guardians".

Downside to it all & my low appreciation is not about above mentioned variables... it is for the extreme cliche's used for interaction between superheroes, their environment & other humans.

Again (& I have the same complaint about DC Comics movies) a potential great movie is dragged down by the inability to tell a good story, have good character interactions & make it coherent.

Just "sticking special effects together with some dialog" isn't worth it. I for one will monitor progress on Russian Superheroes on the silver screen because they already have a few beautiful comics. And for an incredible low budget! If you want to enjoy great water effects, like to see rocks flying in combat etc & don't care about what, why, who, how & where in a logical understandable story line. Watch it.

I fell asleep irritated ;-)

P.s. I would have named them different to make a distinction from Marvel & avoid plagerism gossip. Pretty much looks deliberate to get traction.

Russia saw that Marvel movies were good and said... "Let us do that! We're sure to be successful!""
Rob_Taylor25 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
But they weren't.

Guardians isn't the worst movie I've ever seen by a long way. You can see what they were going for but, sadly, it fell well short of the mark.

I'm all for non-Hollywood movies normally, since seeing how a country other than America handles movies can be very refreshing. Not so much in this case.

Don't get me wrong. There are some good ideas hidden in this film. The problem is, overall, it is sub-par. The acting is decent enough, but the script either needed a lot of work, or the subtitles were way off mark and done by someone who was not a professional translator. Some of the dialogue made no sense in the movie and only served to drag the movie further down from its already shaky perch.

The effects were serviceable, whilst not fantastic but the editing left a fair bit wanting. I'm guessing quite a bit ended up on the cutting room floor. Unfortunately, some of it was needed.

As I mentioned, non-Hollywood movies can be a nice change of pace. Here, though, they tried too hard to make a Marvel movie, right down to an after-credits scene and a world saving plot-line. It wasn't needed. Better to do your own thing rather than ape something so well established. Doing that only invites comparison and, unfortunately, that comparison will never work out in your favour.

Everyone seemed to be taking the whole film so terribly seriously, which was another mistake. Given a bit more humour, and a lot less of the stern, serious frowning, this could have been a gem along the lines of Guardians of the Galaxy. However, the overtly dead-pan delivery and "This is deadly serious" tone made the whole thing less enjoyable.

That said, it was an interesting viewing experience, though not one I will revisit again.

SUMMARY: Russian attempt at a Marvel movie that is not written well enough to stand up to scrutiny. Poor subtitles and mediocre everything else make this a forgettable experience.

Silly instead of kickass.
Colin-630-9358117 December 2018
It's always great to see some practical FX, some live action makeup instead of overly used CGI, but obviously the makeup artist responsible for the baddie has never studied human anatomy before, the guys abs went down past his groin, and his face and entire body looks as if it was made of silly putty , I've never seen foam rubber or silicone look like that, a new low point for the industry. The robot drones were not bad, but the Russians sure love their tanks don't they? Tanks everywhere, everyone loves tanks! I'm not sure if any warrior on the planet would find those round swords useful, but hey, it's superheroes, right? The Invisible girl looked unmistakably Russian, as if she was wearing all the makeup from Instagram all at once, so nothing surprising there, a shame, as she didn't need to,obviously lovely enough. One thing is for sure, they are a whole lot better than the Turkish superheroes, so Marvel need not worry just yet.

Russian superhero rehash
Leofwine_draca13 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
THE GUARDIANS is a Russian superhero movie which feels very much like a local version of X-MEN or perhaps THE AVENGERS. The story sees a team of superheroes, each possessing their own distinct power, going up against the usual mega-strong villain bent on domination and destruction. As with other recent Russian blockbusters like ATTRACTION, this film features a colour palette with greys and blues emphasised, lots of low-rent CGI action, and not a great deal of sense. It feels like a re-heated re-hash of bits and pieces from American movies, with one character transforming into a giant bear in very much the same way as the Hulk, for instance. I found it lacking and rather stupid.

Good try, but really not good enough
deathngel26 February 2017
Felt like leaving the cinema after the first 15 minutes if we weren't out in a group for a birthday celebration. No creativity, no individuality. Tried too hard to be a Marvel movie but fell short with each element a good movie should have. The sets and CG were rather poor for these past 2 centuries' standard. Patchy storyline/editing. My friends and i agreed that perhaps the best actor with the most natural acting was the old professor. Closed my eyes half the time but even the lines were so dull. Finally felt energised when the movie ended. 80% of the cinema crowd bolted from their seats and headed for the exits without seeing the post-credit scenes. I am not looking forward to the sequel even with the Chinese participation...

Fun, but could have been so much more...
warren-8723517 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This is a tough one to judge. We bought the Blu Ray, having seen the trailer, thinking it would be fun. In that respect, it succeeds.

So what is this Russian answer to The Avengers like? I'll talk about its failings, first. It suffers greatly from Anime syndrome. Some reasonable and fun ideas, fantastic visuals, lots of creativity and passion... But badly structured story and poorly defined characters and script. Anime has a tendency to suffer from info-dump scenes. If it's about a character, you have long and boring monologues that tell you 'deep and meaningful' stuff about a character, but are pointless because nothing has come before, to make you care. Likewise, plot details and explanations are often dumped with excessive detail to make sure you know everything the story's writer imagined. They forget the old and most important rule of story telling. Show don't tell.

Marvel movies often have equally absurd super-hero stories and character backgrounds. Where they succeed, is by introducing those stories and character details through smaller interwoven moments within the overall narrative. Don't give a character a monologue, instead give them amusing asides with another character over a few scenes, and/or a brief flashback when they see something, etc.... Reveal the information, for both plot and character, organically and avoid unnecessary details.

The above, is Guardians worst failing. Things suddenly happen without build up. Characters tell someone their tragic story in a monologue that makes you want to scream "get on with it!", but by that point you don't care. It tells you nothing about the character other than some history. You don't FEEL it.

Now on to the good points. The filming (from a visual standpoint, at least) is excellent. The effects are 99% there, to being top tier Hollywood (and certainly on a par with most). The action is well done and fun. What makes all of this all the more impressive, is when you realise it was done on the equivalent of $5 million dollars. The effects work and production quality is, honestly, simply jaw dropping for that amount. You're talking about a film that looks very close to the quality of a Hollywood blockbuster, on the equivalent of something approaching one fortieth of the budget.

For all its failings, though, I'd love to see the creators learn from their mistakes, and keep producing stuff that could challenge Hollywood in quality. I also can't finish without saying, whatever you think of the film, it's all worth it for the sight of a bear with a mini-gun!!! :-D

This movie is a joke, just not funny one
marshmellouka9 April 2017
Collection of all the movie clichés, plagiarized plot line, mixed with Russian imperialism (somehow claiming former Soviet republics in any stupid way possible). Not good enough to be a joke or a trash...total waste of resources.Do not waste your time on it, not to say - god save you from going to cinema and paying money for this crap.

One of the all time great Bad Science Fiction films
subsonixsteve25 April 2017
from the heavy handed introduction / title sequence involving unpleasant manipulation of Humans, I knew I was in for a treat. My viewing pleasure was massively enhanced by the appallingly translated subtitles, (talking about a daughter, saying "he did this and died" or something along those lines) The frequent, perplexing "gazing at another's grief" scenes with characters that looked as though they had all traces of expression CGI'd from their faces. News bulletins that looked as if the broadcasters didn't really know how serious all this might be. Arsus (the bear) seemed to be suffering some kind of existential crisis going on most of the time, even when he was a bear, and the grinning oaf that seemed to be the bad guy was fantastic, posturing with his hands in the air whilst manipulating his machines. So in all seriousness, one of the best / worst films I have ever experienced in my life of watching Really Bad science fiction films. and believe me this was Really Bad. Great Fun.

User rating very harsh, there is a lot worse with a better score
cjoshi-6484115 April 2017
Having come across the trailer 'Guardian' on the Internet, initially I was fooled into thinking it was one for the Galaxy sequel (the action scenes looked impressive), but to my surprise it was an apparent Russian blockbuster, but an even bigger surprise is the rating. Yes, the script is rushed, and the story is basic, heck some will argue it's a Russian 'Galaxy' but it's not as bad as the score suggests, it's a shame people have jumped on the bandwagon in helping the movie look worse than it is.

All major movie making countries are trying to make their own superhero films and they all have the same clichés and silly stories (including Hollywood) it just may be a little worse here. It deserves an average 5 just for some impressive action sequences though, on that front it's the best 5 million dollars you will ever see spent on an action film, it looks like a very impressive blockbuster and puts some Hollywood ones to shame in that respect, so hope people can view this as the popcorn film it's meant to be, and the unfair score improves.

Don't get me wrong there is a lot bad in terms of writing etc, but as an action movie it's watchable, maybe if only once so 3+ is an insult, 5-6 is a disappointing score for such a film but more realistic all the same, definitely better than The Asylum movies and even some of those currently they have a higher score and they have nothing going for them, at least the Guardians boasts some decent effects.

Don't go by the rating make your own choice.

Do not waste your time
ashish_pradhan_198924 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This Russian movie is a hybrid of 'X-Men' and 'Transformers' is a slow-burning attempted sci-fi actioner that has little to recommend it other than the dark, ominous and hazy look that permeates the dystopia wreaked by a mad scientist August Kuratov (Stanislav Shirin) who suddenly finds himself all too powerful to remain as such.In an uninteresting and tiresome attempt at back story, a group of Russian intelligence have a closed group round table discussion on how it happened and what needs to be done to prevent him from going loose. It emerges that there was a rival scientist who was being given all the appreciation and this led to Kuratov's jealousy & madness. During the Cold War, an organization called "Patriot" created a super-hero squad which included Arsus(Anton Pampushnyy)the shape shifting bear man, Khan (Sanzhar Madiyev)the specialized assassin, Lernik(Sebastian Sisak)the stone magnet and Ksenya(Alina Lenina) the thermo neutral vanishing queen among others, members of multiple soviet republics. For years, the heroes had to hide their identities, but now the time has come for them to show their strengths and be counted as guardians. It's up to the Russian intelligence led by Major Elena Larina(Valeriya Shkirando) to convince them to come to the aid of the Russian people and vanquish their creator, Kuratov. While the cinematography is darkly foreboding the tempo is a little too ponderous and the background score- too hyphenating. The narrative fails to drum up any energy en route to the final act which involves the eventual vanquishing of Kuratov and the hinting at of a sequel to come. There are occasional forced non- combat scenes which try too hard to sound emotional but they those scenes are boring. There's no adrenaline rush to be had here either. The CGI is industrial grade, there's hardly any light or color in the set-up. Every act gives you the feel of a low-level computer game where events move a little too slowly to be exciting. While the writer has taken pains to create unique powers for the individual guardians, they just don't come across as interesting enough nor do they have the enthusiasm to fight with gusto. This film just doesn't have what it takes to keep you entertained !

It's not that bad but it's not good either
kaorihamano2 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I know that everyone says it's boring and I understand it. It could be better but what I realize that the writer, Andrei Gavrilov, is a pianist. His job is not a writer. He's a pianist. I guess he tried out writing and maybe even art if he make The Guardian in comic form.

In his Wikipedia, he said about The Guardian, "I wasn't satisfied with myself. In a material sense, I was doing very well. But I knew if I was to continue in this way I would never be the artist I dreamed of being - free, original, idealistic, out of the so-called musical industry, which is a contradiction in terms."

What throwing me off is that I was watching the English dub. Usually, movies felt like they are talking to each other but it is dubbed, it throw that feeling away from you and Arsus/Arseniy's pants. Like seriously, how come he still have his pants on when he turn into a bear?

Overall, In my opinion, it wasn't that bad and I enjoy the movie. People may say that I don't know what good movies are and they are right.

Boring , don't waste your time and money
taoy_inw25 February 2017
Story is absolutely boring and predictable easily. It just make me feel like this movie is copycat from other super hero movie. Another disappointment is the CG and acting is pretty bad. The character almost don't have any unique characteristic of themselves. Some detail is just came up without knowing how it be and how it go (Doesn't make any sense), Haste makes waste .

Not good...
paulclaassen20 June 2018
The film has the look and feel of a video game. It moves too quickly at times, as if being advanced to the next level of a game. It sometimes feel they neglect showing crucial events. It was pretty much the Russian version of 'Fantastic Four'. This ambitious project has some really excellent effects and great moments, but overall it was just not compelling enough.

A bit disappointing.
jchidsey-675868 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
When I first saw the trailer to this film I was admittedly looking forward to seeing it. After watching through it however, I noticed the abundance of plot holes, underdeveloped characters, and lazy script writing. The film overall felt like it may have been rushed towards completion due to the pacing issues present throughout, and how some of the CGI and digital compositing seemed to suffer more through the end of the film. The characters themselves do not show much progression, and basically stay the same the entire way through, making them seem very two dimensional. And in the end, they were trying to use the tired cinematic formula of how "friendship saves the day" but the characters barely spent much time together. And the times they did show them in the same room it was just a messy exchange of one-liners and odd exchanges. Not to mention I could not have cared less about their back stories (Temirkhan loosing his brother was directly his own fault and should not have been angry at August for his own stupidity, and Arsus feeling like he was loosing his humanity every time he turned into his bear form yet he continued to do so, without showing him ever loosing his so called consciousness). Overall, I did not hate the movie. I felt there was a lot of unexplained situations that could have easily been explained (how Kseniya lost her memory, or why the general betrayed his country). The action in the film was pretty entertaining and the way their powers worked seemed pretty interesting and mostly original. The film had a lot of potential but it was sad to see it presented how it was.

It's an OK movie , nice to watch but....
Paulo_Clemente9 May 2017
The plot is the normal on this movies, a secret project to turn man on super soldiers is shut down and the mentor of this project finds himself with superpowers and wants to rule the world.

This movie has good ingredients to be a good movie, superheroes, fight scenes, nice girls , action, i only gave it 6 stars because sometimes to me it seems like the acting was not at the best, it didn't look natural, look mechanized , if the dialogues where more fluid then the movie would be better.

So , the Russian avengers is a good movie to see and hope it will get better on the sequel.

Could be better
BandSAboutMovies24 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The Guardians are a team of Soviet superheroes created during the Cold War but hidden until they're needed in our time. Each member of the team represents a different nationality of the USSR and each of their powers reflect either a tradition of the people of Russia and its associated countries. It's really simple why I watched this: a bear uses a machine gun.

The Guardians of the Patriot Program are Ursus the bear-man, the super fast blade master Khan, the man who can control the earth named Ler and Xenia, a woman who turns invisible and can become water. They come back to battle their creator, Professor August Kuratov, who has become power mad and is taking over Russian.

This is the kind of movie a twelve-year-old boy would make, but then his parents would then make him include long talky parts that he'd advise you fast-forward so that you can watch a bear fight tanks.

There was originally a plan to make a sequel to this film, but it bombed badly and has been selected as one of Russia's worst movies ever. I don't have much experience with Russian films, but this didn't seem that bad.

If you are into comics, you're gonna love this one
stoneoliver10 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
OK, I have to agree - this movie is not best movie of all times and is certainly not Oscar material. But you know - it never tried to be one. This is just what a comic looks like on the big screen with 0% adaptation. I really don't know if there's a comic book but if you cut the frames and add the captions, you may create a very good comic. Now, my rating is 10, because 1. I looove comic books 2. I have lived to see a super hero movie that doesn't take itself too seriously. The superheroes in this movie are just normal people that remained normal after their transformation into super beings. They don't want to protect the Earth or to be the world's police. They just want to live normal lives - and that's exactly what they did after completing the quest.

Manbear and Friends
nhgodfre23 April 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Just finished this movie and it prompted me to make my first review here. I gotta say this was not as bad as I was expecting. For a budget as low as this was, the Graphics looked pretty good. The fight scenes for hand to hand combat were pretty decent.

The real hangups I have for the movie revolve around the plot. Most superhero movies we get have some sort of setup to a backstory that gets the viewer interested or gives us a backdrop for motivations or future character development. In this movie the Audience gets just a few clues to the Heroes and their "Character" by the initial scenes of them being gathered and a few moments before the action that elude to a deeper story.

All of it is kicked to the side to accommodate action scenes and a montage of "New Weapons" to help them stand up against the Antagonist (August Kuratov, Big Bad Guy looks like a Babyfaced Roided Bane).

The ending also felt just way left field. I understand this is a superhero movie but the universe just gave me a Guy who could use telekinesis on rocks, a woman who could go invisible, a werebear and a speedster. You can't have all of this and then end it with, well the Heroes who were unable to defeat Kuratov joined their powers and funneled it into Ler to shoot a burst of energy that levels a 1 km Radius. I know that sounds like I'm reaching but the absurdity of the scene makes the villain feel trivial to all the buildup.

Overall I can forgive the movie and I am willing to give its heavily hinted sequel a chance if it ever gets made.

A poor effort that could have been great...
elsol-324 April 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The premise of genetically-altered super-soldiers is as old and worn out as the hills, but as Marvel has demonstrated, if handled well, it can be entertaining, stimulating, and fun.

Guardians is none of these things.

A ponderous, shambling effort, with CGI that ranges between decent (for the machinery) to amateur (for Ursus), pacing and directing that will send you to sleep, and characters that have all the charisma of an old-school telephone dial tone, "Guardians" is barely watchable.

The frustrating thing is that there were some genuinely good ideas in this movie when it came to some of the set pieces and choreography of the fight scenes, but they were so clumsily executed it just leaves you disappointed. The director has no clue how to build tension appropriately, and I was grateful for the small handful of intentional jokes spattered through the film - they helped compensate for the many unintentional ones made as a result of a lack of acting and animating talent.

Not recommended.

In A Word, Worst
denis8889 March 2019
This is a very silly attempt of modern Russian cinema about superhoeroes. I wouldn't go long into deyals, just mention - this is a derivative, third-rate, worst sort of a terrible humorless pseudo-heroic scrap idiocy which will make you laugh your head off. We saw it all and why pay money on a flick with campy dialog, bad acting, repeated trite plot and hardly believable characters when we can see all the better in US versions. It's probably the nadir of all sorts and a shameful lambast of a lost slight potential.
