Like most things in life our views are colored by our own background personal interests. I am the son of a commercial fisherman and fully understand and appreciate these folks' lifestyle. I am also around many sports fishermen who believe any commercial boat on the ocean is a threat to the world and their pastime. I personally enjoy recreational fishing (although would never classify myself as a "sports fisherman"). I also believe both commercial and sports fishermen contribute to the depletion of our fishing stocks, but it doesn't make either bad people.
I will say that sports fishermen GREATLY underestimate the amount of collective fish they take from the ocean and the impact it has on our stocks.
I also believe that if not for commercial fisherman then a vast population of the Country (if not the world) would have no access to seafood. Remember, not everyone lives on a coastline. It also goes without saying that other than perhaps a few reality TV stars, no one is getting rich off of commercial fishing...most are just trying eke out a living and work very hard for very little.
