You've Got to Start Somewhee

Harry is back on the job. A few puzzle pieces are thrown out for us. We see a man in an expensive car stop to help a woman. As he speaks to her, a man comes up from behind and shoots him in the head. Bosch returns to the precinct. His adversarial Captain is gone and a dorky guy has taken over. After a chat with his daughter, he is called to investigate a body in a trunk. The dead man is a producer of hard core pornography, worth a lot of money. The interesting thing is he has all kinds of expensive things on him, including a lot of money and a Rolex. Why was he killed? There are some rotten things going on with some bad cops. For now I don't see much spark. Also, that whole mayoral thing is still going on with O'Shea who intervened in the last case and got the assistant district attorney killed. I'll give it a chance.

An intriguing start to the second season

Bosch comes back to work and gets involved in a new case.

I think with the first season done and the regular character dynamics already established, I enjoyed the start of this one more than previously. I am more invested in the main characters and compelled to find out how they deal with the situation at hand. I particularly like the scene involving a search that unexpectedly becomes a foot-chase.

All cast are on good form. Being somewhat of a closeted Trekkie, I am pleased to see Jeri Ryan and it looks like she will have further involvement in the story as it unfolds. As a huge fan of 'The Wire' it is also good to see James Ransone playing another dodgy character.

Speaking of 'The Wire', the L. A. Politics is in focus in a similar way to the Mayoral shenanigans of Baltimore. These scenes are quite well done and plausible, but do not have the same level of detail, and connectivity between events and characters. I find it hard to not compare the two shows, which I appreciate is unfair.

A smoother ride, but not without contrivances and unpleasantness

My overall rating of "Bosch"'s Season 2: 5/10

This episode represents what feels like a massive improvement over the previous season's content, with smoother, freer-flowing action, a larger scale and scope (perhaps because of a larger budget) and seemingly a more interesting story with more interesting characters. However, there are contrivances and strange things (Bosch's whole situation with his return to the job among them), confusing dialogues, cliches etc. I also can't help but notice characters kind of being dicks to each other throughout the episode, from Bosch's daughter insulting his facial hair to Bosh and his boss to other policemembers. Just seems like something that's not necessary in characters not straight-up established as such.
