Playing Oxenfree and watching Stranger Things, same feeling
jagvizzuett17 September 2019
I've been coming and going about buying this game, at times I was interested in it but right before I bought it I always got cold feet, and I don't know why. Such a bummer it was, because I could have experienced this game a lot sooner.

While playing Oxenfree I got the same feeling I get every time I watch Stranger Things; the soundtrack, teenagers who are the main characters, the setting, the science fiction of it all.

The story goes like this: five teenagers go to an island after "curfew" to mess around and get drunk in the beach; only the main character (Alex) gets in touch with "something or someone" while messing around with her radio inside a cave.

The story develops after this; I will not spoil the fun by saying anything else, only that it was a gaming experience unlike anything else I've played before. I always try and play underrated / indie / not well-known games, because I've learned that most of these games have a lot to offer to us gamers (games such as Undertale, Dandara, Unruly Heroes, Iconoclasts, Forgotton Anne, Guacamelee, Hollow Knight, Pinstripe... all of these offer something unique and beautiful, and Oxenfree does the same).

So, Oxenfree is basically a science fiction / thriller 2D side scroller; it's basically a walking simulator, but the story and dialogues are so well written, it never gets boring. The characters are well thought and have more depth than some AAA Games out there, so kuddos to the developers.

This game is for people who enyoy a good well-written story above action, gunshots and violence. If you are a fan of indie games, science fiction and a good script, this game is for you.

Also, it is pretty replayable, you will know why when the time comes, and if you get to play the game.

A phenomenal blend of horror, storytelling, and thrills.

Oxenfree blends a mixture of suspense, horror and, on a few occasions, a good sprinkling of sheer terror. Set on a historical island, you and a couple of fellow teens begin to uncover a mind bending mystery.

In between dialogue choices, which do affect player relationships and the overall ending, the main mechanic of the game is the use of an old radio, allowing the player to tune in to random frequencies at any time. This can be used to uncover secrets, make contact through inter-dimensional time rifts, and listen to the radio, of course.

The art style of gorgeous, the soundtrack is one of a kind, and it was a joy from start to finish. I would recommend this game to everyone.

Wow.

The voice acting on this alone is enough for the purchase of the game. Fun scenery and artistic graphics are a bonus. Absolutely phenomenal........... ... .

A coming of age tale that is one worth telling
chunkylefunga30 June 2017
Oxenfree is a majestic, supernatural coming of age story which uses branching dialogue to give real three dimensional depths to its lead characters.

Whilst the game is relatively short, about six/seven hours in length, quality has definitely been chosen over quality, you still feel that you have been on an adventure through the characters dialogue, the multiple paths you can take (and alternate endings) along with the beautiful scenery.

My main complaints are a lack of really challenging puzzles and the short time that you are given to choose your dialogue.

Oxenfree has it's funny moments and at times can be very touching, but despite being essentially a horror game, it isn't scary.

Overall you will be entranced by the characters and their story lines. Just a shame there isn't really much replay value, especially if you get the good ending first time, like I did.
