Judge Renner : Government secrecy, the idea that the federal government can act, surveil, detain, interrogate, and even kill American citizens with no oversight or accountability. No obligation to present the people with evidence that led to their actions, that, in my view, is the gravest threat to our national security. It erodes the very foundation of our great democracy. This is a system of checks and balances founded on separation of powers. The fact that any federal prosecutor who utters the magic words, who invokes "national security" can suppress cases, can quash subpoenas, can avoid grand juries, that offends me.
