On this day in 1938 R.U.R.: Rossum’s Universal Robots became the first sci-fi television show and influenced the medium for years to come.
By the time the British Broadcasting Corporation decided to air an excerpt from Czech playwright Karel Čapek’s R.U.R.: Rossum’s Universal Robots live from its Alexandra Palace studios on February 11, 1938, the play had already been around for 17 years, but the airing is notable not only as the first use of the word “robot” in popular culture but also as the premiere of the first science fiction television show ever. Although the BBC would have to wait a few decades before it gave us Doctor Who, the genre has continued to honor R.U.R. by including hidden references to the sci-fi pioneer in several notable series that owe much to this forefather of the lot.

It is expected to be available soon via Roku devices and Amazon Fire TV, with the plan roll out across other devices and platforms throughout the year. After Starz laid considerable groundwork in 2018 for the international expansion of its subscription streaming app, the Lionsgate-owned premium network and Bell Media have announced March 1 as the launch date in Canada.
The news about the rollout up north came just prior to Lionsgate reporting its quarterly earnings, where Starz is sure to be a major topic. It also included an updated stat from Bell, which said its Crave subscription service — which will house Starz — has reached 2.3 million subscribers. Last fall, Lionsgate said Starz had passed 3 million paid streaming customers in the U.S.
Also on March 1, pay-tv sibling Encore will rebrand as Starz on two linear channels and in pay-tv operators’ on-demand venues. (Encore became “Starz Encore” in the U.S. in 2016.) A week after that, Starz will become available directly across Canada as an add-on to Crave for an extra $6 a month. The streaming service can be accessed via Crave.

After a rough year of substantial user losses and a hefty number of departures from its executive team, Snapchat’s parent company Snap posted better-than-expected revenues for its fourth quarter.
The company took in $389.8 million, besting projections of $377 million, per Variety. Despite these gains, the company did lose a significant number of daily active users over the course of 2018 -- to the tune of 1 million. That said, the company's current number of daily active users -- 186 million -- was flat from Q3 to Q4, suggesting that perhaps the tides are turning a bit.
In its report, Snap emphasized that its iOS user base “increased both quarter-over-quarter and year-over-year,” per TechCrunch. As for its Android user base, Snap CEO Evan Spiegel reiterated that the company has experienced frequent problems with its Android app. He said Snap has put its resources toward building a new version of the app, and is testing...

Long-battered shares of Snapchat parent Snap Inc. soared nearly 22% today on heavy trading volume to close at $8.56, their highest level since last September.
The company’s fourth-quarter earnings report after the close of trading yesterday fueled today’s frenzy, which occurred on a day when stock markets were largely at a standstill. While the fledgling social media company has yet to turn a profit, and showed flat user growth, overall performance in the quarter exceeded expectations and served for many investors as proof Snap isn’t about to disappear.
The tech startup’s stock price is still well below the teens and low 20s, the level where it traded for more than a year after its Ipo in March 2017. Even before today’s rally, however, it had gained more than 20% in 2019 to date after bottoming out last December at just $4.82 a share.

YouTube’s ‘Explore’ feature is now available to more users across a number of popular devices.
First rolled out as a test to just 1% of iOS users in July last year, the feature offers users a page of personally recommended videos meant to help them explore new topics and creators within YouTube, while still keeping their established interests and subscriptions separated for easy consumption. Now, Explore has been pushed out to more users across devices including iPhones, iPads, Android phones and tablets, and on desktop, TechCrunch reports.
New devices and users aren't the only change. YouTube has also tweaked the feature, adding sections within it to spotlight smaller creators -- something it mentioned doing during Explore’s first rollout last year.

Pocket.watch, the digital studio that works with kid-focused creators like Ryan ToysReview, CaptainSparklez, and HobbyKidsTV to create content and lifestyle products, has launched a gaming division.
Under the P.W Games banner, the company will launch both mobile and console games alongside established publishers like WildWorks and Outright Games. P.W Games’ first title to market features breakout star Ryan -- who has the fourth most-viewed YouTube channel on earth -- and is called Tag With Ryan (pictured above). The endless runner-style mobile game is free to play but monetizes via ads and in-app purchases. Pocket.watch says that Tag -- created with WildWorks -- has generated over 1 million downloads without any marketing or PR spend since its launched on both iOS and Android in December.

Snap Inc., which has faced pressure after missteps with its SnapChat social network and high turnover in the executive suite, reported increased revenue but flat user numbers in its fiscal fourth quarter.
Shares in the tech company soared 20% after hours Tuesday after closing at $7.04, their highest level since October, during the regular trading day.
Revenue increased 36% to $389.8 million and diluted losses per share narrowed to 4 cents, ahead of Wall Street’s expectation for a loss of 8 cents a share.
The number of daily active users held fairly steady at 186 million, compared with 187 million in the year-earlier period. On a sequential basis, the user base was flat with the previous quarter, indicating a stabilization, which for Snap investors came as a relief.
The company has faced intense scrutiny in recent weeks after the abrupt resignation of Tim Stone, who had been poached from Amazon to be Snap’s CFO last fall.

ESPN’s streaming service, ESPN+, has surpassed 2 million paid subscribers, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced during its first quarter earnings call on Tuesday.
ESPN launched its streaming service last April, attaining 1 million subscribers within its first five months. It’s now reached 2 million in less than a year. In January, ESPN+ debuted its first “Ufc Fight Night,” where it added 568,000 subscribers on Friday and Saturday alone, the biggest two-day sign-up stretch (though some of those were via the 7-day free trial).
The app gives sports nuts thousands of live Mlb, Mls, NHL and English Premier League games, along with access to its “30 for 30” documentary series archive. ESPN+ also offers users exclusive shows like Kobe Bryant’s basketball breakdown show “Detail.”

Dr. Mario World, Nintendo's next mobile game, will debut this summer.
Another Nintendo franchise is making the leap to mobile as Nintendo has revealed Dr. Mario World.
Dr. Mario World will be developed by Nintendo, Line Corporation and Nhn Entertainment. According to a recent tweet, Nintendo is targeting a summer 2019 release date for the mobile title. It is expected to receive a global release for iOS and Android at that time.
Details on the game itself are few and far between, but it's believed that Dr. Mario World will be a free-to-play title that features microtransactions. It seems that the game will be a puzzle title like the previous entries in the series, but Nintendo hasn't shared any further details about the specifics of its gameplay at this time. That being said, we'd be absolutely shocked if this doesn't turn out to be a match-three puzzle...

It is a view broadly held in Hollywood that writing is not the greatest of James Cameron’s manifold filmmaking gifts: The visual storytelling of his blockbusters is what sticks, not the plywood poetry he sticks in the mouths of his often perfunctory characters. A new Cameron production that boasts his imagination behind the keyboard rather than the camera, “Alita: Battle Angel” does little to change that perception. Directed instead with budget-splashing brio but little genuine inspiration by Robert Rodriguez, this manga-based cyberpunk origin story is a pretty zappy effects showcase, weighed down by a protracted, soul-challenged Frankenstory that short-circuits every time it gets moving.
Landing somewhere at the intersection of “Pinocchio,” “Ghost in the Shell” and, uh, “Rollerball” — yet more generic than this disparate cocktail of reference points might lead you to expect — “Alita” might prove a shiny enough commercial distraction in the bleak midwinter box office to greenlight...

Alien: Blackout is an excellent new mobile game set in the Alien universe. Check out our review!
Release Date: January 24, 2019
Platform: iOS (reviewed), Android
Developer: Rival Games & Theory Interactive
Publisher: FoxNext Games & D3 Go!
Genre: Survival Horror
It’s safe to say that just about no one expected the follow-up to Alien: Isolation to be a mobile game inspired by the Five Nights At Freddy’s puzzle-horror formula, but that’s exactly what developers Rival Games and Theory Interactive bring us in Alien: Blackout. It’s easy to dismiss mobile games or view them as a downgrade from console experiences, but this $5 sequel is worth every penny and then some, with engaging gameplay, atmospheric presentation, spot-on voice acting, and just enough scares to do right by the franchise.
Blackout takes place shortly after the events of Isolation. You play as Amanda Ripley, who is hiding in an air duct from a slimy,...

Movie buffs left out in the cold by FilmStruck’s demise will soon get a new streaming service stocked with over 1,000 classic and contemporary art-house films this spring: The Criterion Collection announced that the Criterion Channel will launch April 8 in the U.S. and Canada.
The Criterion Channel will be regularly priced at $10.99 per month or $99.99 for an annual subscription. Customers who sign up now as charter subscribers will receive a special discounted rate of $9.99 per month or $89.99 per year — pricing the company says will be locked in “for as long as you stay active” — as well as a 30-day free trial.
The Criterion Channel (criterionchannel.com) will be available on computers, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, iOS, and Android devices.
Criterion didn’t reveal specific titles that will be available on Criterion Channel but said the subscription VOD service will include access to Criterion’s entire streaming library...

As a fan of contained and intimately crafted science fiction stories, I was enthralled by Grant Sputore’s unique examination of the human condition and morality in I Am Mother, his stunning feature film debut. Evoking similar feelings I had while watching films like 10 Cloverfield Lane, Moon, Ex Machina, I Am Mother strikes a perfect balance, delivering up an intriguing slice of post-apocalyptic sci-fi coupled with a thoughtful character study that finds new ways to explore the dangers of technology and how it relates to all of humanity as we continue to transition towards greater leaps in automation and electronic sciences.
I Am Mother introduces us to a world where there has been a cataclysmic event that has wiped out all of humanity. Inside a remote bunker, a highly evolved robot named Mother (voiced by Rose Byrne and performed by Luke Hawker) has been tasked with bringing new life...

Roku now offers premium channels like Showtime and Starz.
The company, which makes devices that let users stream more than 10,000 free, ad-supported movies and TV episodes, rolled out 26 paid channels today to a number of users in the U.S. Users can pick and choose which add-ons they want, and will pay a per-month subscription fee to access each. Fees vary from channel to channel.
Along with Showtime and Starz, Roku has added subscriptions to Epix, Tastemade, CollegeHumor’s Dropout, Lifetime Movie Club, LOLFlicks, Smithsonian Channel Plus, and more. Users who sign up for Showtime, Stars, or Epix before March 31 will receive a 30-day free trial of those services.
Not all Roku users will have access to the add-ons, which are being introduced in a “phased rollout,” the company said in a statement. Roku’s iOS app has access, while Android users won’t get the new channels till mid-February.

Following through on plans announced earlier this month, Roku has officially added premium subscription access to Showtime, Starz and Epix via the Roku Channel.
The channel is up and running on iOS; Android devices will get it in mid-February. Anyone signing up for the premium networks before March 31 will get a 30-day free trial, the company said. One notable carve-out at launch is HBO, which is not among the networks being offered.
With 23.8 million active users, Roku has become a formidable player in the streaming wars, enabling many viewers to assemble their own bundles once they ditch their pay-tv subscriptions.
“We’ve made subscription streaming easy for our customers and are putting them in control. Now there is one place on the Roku platform where users can seamlessly access both free and premium entertainment, with one click sign-up, easy subscription management and a single monthly bill,” said Rob Holmes, VP of Programming and Engagement.

In November of 1991, Neil Young told Rolling Stone about his ambitious plans to dig into his archives and release “eighteen to twenty albums’ worth of unreleased material” in some form or another. “We can’t put it all out,” Young said. “But it will be like an archive. There will be a lot of detail, things you wouldn’t usually find on a box set. I’m not so much concerned with how or when it comes out but that it’s in order. I want to do that myself.

Taking a page out of Amazon’s playbook, Roku is launching premium subscriptions on the Roku Channel starting Monday — promising to be another valuable revenue stream for the streaming-video platform company.
As part of a launch promo, Roku users who sign up for Showtime, Starz or Epix before March 31, 2019, will be eligible to receive a 30-day free trial of those services on the Roku Channel. HBO is conspicuously absent from the list, although Roku says it’s continuing to talk to additional partners.
Variety was first to report last summer that Roku was planning to resell video-subscription services through its platform. The offer is similar to Amazon’s existing Amazon Channels marketplace, which generated an estimated $1.7 billion in 2018. Terms of Roku’s distribution arrangement with the premium channels aren’t being disclosed, but the company is likely receiving some share of subscription fees and/or a bounty for new subscriber signups.

The final entry in Wong Kar-wai’s informal love trilogy after “Days of Being Wild” (1990) and “In the Mood for Love” (2000) is set in the 60’s and took 4 years to complete before it came out in 2004. As the informal sequel to “In the Mood for Love” which is considered as his masterpiece “2046” had a lot to live up to. Even with such hype “2046” lived up to the expectations and can be argued as even better than its predecessor.
Unlike any other films by Wong, “2046” has a much more complex story, told by jumping through time and reality. After the events of “In the Mood for Love”, Chow Mo-wan spends life as a writer and returns to Hong Kong after spending some years in Singapore. Snap forced out two senior executives following an internal investigation into an alleged inappropriate relationship involving an outside contractor, the Wall Street Journal reports.
The company fired Francis Racioppi, its head of global security, after an investigation into his relationship with a contractor, the Journal reported, citing sources. Racioppi allegedly had an affair with a woman, whom he hired, then terminated her contract once the relationship ended, according to the report.
Snap’s head of human resources, Jason Halbert, also announced plans to leave the company this week. Although he wasn’t directly involved in the situation he recruited Racioppi, who reported to him, according to the Journal.
Racioppi told the journal he had done nothing wrong and planned to hire an attorney to challenge the findings. The company declined Deadline’s request for comment.
The departures mark the latest in a wave of executive exits from the ephemeral messaging company.

TNT has set 10 cast members for the Ridley Scott-produced drama “Raised by Wolves.”
The show, which was ordered straight-to-series in October, centers on two androids tasked with raising human children on a mysterious virgin planet. As the burgeoning colony of humans threatens to be torn apart by religious differences, the androids learn that controlling the beliefs of humans is a treacherous and difficult task.
The cast includes:
—Amanda Collin will play Mother, an android with a secret past who has been programmed to raise a brood of human children on a faraway planet. In addition to teaching her children to survive, Mother must also keep them from believing in the unreal; to ensure this virgin planet isn’t torn apart by the same religious differences that lead the Earth to its ultimate destruction. Mother hopes her family will serve as the nucleus for a peaceful, technocratic colony — a new beginning for humanity.

Bbtv Interactive, the one-year-old unit of BroadbandTV’s multi-platform network dedicated to helming original games and mobile apps in conjunction with members of its talent roster, has unveiled its latest title.
Bbtv has teamed with Los Angeles-based married creator duo Chad Wild Clay (6 million subscribers) and Vy Qwaint (3 million subscribers) to launch a mobile game titled Spy Ninja Network. While Chad has pursued other forms of content in the past, the couple are now squarely focused on videos targeting young viewers. Their latest ongoing series follows a fictional spy saga in which, as ninjas, they are working to defeat a villain dubbed 'the hacker' and his Project Zorgo initiative. Silly though that may sound, it's been a wild success; on his channel, Chad counts a stunning 1.2 billion lifetime views.
Savvily, the game will serve as part of this YouTube narrative, enabling flans to play along with the duo, to help...

Updated to reflect new information about the reason for the CFO’s departure
Shares of Snapchat parent Snap Inc. fell 14% today as investors weigh in on the departure of CFO Tim Stone, a former Amazon executive who exited after just eight months on the job.
The company reported the its latest high-level executive departure Tuesday, after the market closed, saying Stone planned to “pursue other opportunities.”
Bloomberg is reporting something else transpired: Stone went around CEO Evan Spiegel to ask Snap’s board directly for a raise, in an incident that heightened tensions between the two and hastened the CFO’s departure.
Stone apparently also had big ambitions, asking to be promoted to chief operating officer, following the departure of Imran Kahn at the end of last year, Bloomberg reported. Spiegel appointed two outsiders instead: Jeremi Gorman as chief business officer and Jared Grusd as chief strategy officer.

Gretchen Carlson’s break with Fox News was one of the defining moments in the recent evolution of the much-debated news network. The former “Fox & Friends” anchor sued the network in 2016, claiming sexual harassment by then-chief Roger Ailes, and settled for $20 million and an exceedingly uncommon public apology. It was a seismic shift for a network congenitally repulsed by admitting to any wrongdoing. Thanks in part both to Carlson’s and then-Fox host Megyn Kelly’s openness around issues of harassment at Fox, both Ailes (who died in 2017) and, eventually, popular Fox News host Bill O’Reilly (the subject of several sexual harassment claims Fox News was revealed to have settled at great expense) were pushed out of the network.
And now, like her former colleague Kelly, Carlson is pivoting into a future in which her own personal history provides context and motivation for what lies ahead. On “Breaking...
