- Inspired by Hailey's passion, Rodrigo insists that she play with the orchestra, over the objections of Gloria (Bernadette Peters). Veteran maestro Thomas (Malcolm McDowell) tries to rise above his resentment of Rodrigo, only to face more humiliations. Hailey pays a late night visit to Alex, on the eve of her big day -- the moment she's been waiting for.—Anonymous
- Rodrigo males a grand entry as conductor, starring his parrot, a trick appreciated by all except predecessor Thomas, who realizes it's stole from an old maestro. After a hot night with Alex, Hailey now gets her chance to try out the fifth hobo chair, but performs so badly and childishly that Rodrigo switches repertoire to a four oboes piece.—KGF Vissers
- Hailey and Rodrigo's first rehearsal as substitute oboist and conductor of the New York Symphony Orchestra are the same. Hailey is excited not only for the opportunity, but playing with the orchestra's lead oboist Betty Cragdale, who she has long admired. Betty, however, has her own different thoughts about her new colleague. Hailey also finds that this orchestra, no different than most musical ensembles, is not always just about the music and the artistic vision, but the working conditions which are negotiated between management and union. Just because Hailey impressed Rodrigo enough with what was her unofficial/official audition does not mean that she will have an easy ride, especially if she doesn't pull her weight during this rehearsal. Meanwhile, Thomas, who is watching the rehearsal with Gloria from the proverbial "bleachers", continues to seethe, this time over what he considers Rodrigo's over the top theatrics.—Huggo
