Dutch Oscarwinner Marleen Gorris (Antonia' s Line) was supposed to direct this movie. Due to illness she was replaced by another Dutch Oscar director Mike van Diem (Character).
Because Italian isn't Mike van Diem's native tongue, it was difficult to give the Italian actors direction. Assistant director Annemarie van de Mond who worked on the production was fluent in Italian and helped with the communication barrier.
The film premiered with a tulip filled red-carpet at the Ryerson Theatre as an official selection of the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival.
Production Designer Harry Ammerlan and his team used large blocks of Oasis floral foam to create the tulip bed which was then covered in soil and over 14,000 tulips were planted.
The region of Matera where the Italian portion of the film was shot was listed as the 2019 European Capital of Culture.
