“Like a loaded gun, my love/I lost control of the wheel/Double-crossed by a neon pill,” Cage the Elephant’s Matt Shultz sings on the title track from the Kentucky band’s sixth album. The sound is familiar, a smart, subdued garage-rock swagger that’s a prime example of their ability to punch up a throwback style. But the lyrics are far from burnout boilerplate. Several years ago, Shultz experienced a psychotic response to prescribed medication, and in 2023 he was charged with criminal possession of a firearm. He described...

Kacey Musgraves, the esteemed Grammy-winning country singer, is celebrating her fifth studio album Deeper Wells with a tour by the same name, which commenced its journey on April 28 in Dublin, Ireland.
Hailing from the heartland of Texas and launching her career in Nashville in 2013, Musgraves made an indelible mark with her major-label debut album, Same Trailer Different Park, which garnered a Grammy Award for Best Country Album. What distinguishes Musgraves within the world of country music is her whimsical playfulness and tongue-in-cheek flamboyance.
When Musgraves burst onto the scene with her album Same Trailer, Different Park, she married a country tone with progressive lyrics, unafraid to delve into topics such as recreational drug use and casual encounters.

Bnny, a.k.a. Chicago singer-songwriter Jessica Viscius, has returned with the new single “Good Stuff.”
The track opens with meditative, brooding synths (“I still remember the first time you said you loved me/Texting me at 2am from across the country”) before the tempo picks up and evolves into euphoric, blissed-out acceptance (“I’m hanging onto the sunshine”), making for one of the most laidback breakup songs of the year.

Thames TV’s Rainbow was the ordinary, everyday tale of Geoffrey: a grown man who turned his back on family life and a fulfilling career in favour of living in a primary-coloured nightmare with an assortment of irascible talking animals and polyamorous troubadours. There was Bungle, a moody, stroppy wet-blanket of a bear who spent the day naked but inexplicably donned pyjamas at night-time; George, a passive-aggressive pink hippo who hid his Machiavellian evil and simmering sexuality behind a façade of lash-fluttering shyness; and Zippy, a… a… erm… (whatever the hell Zippy was) hellraiser with a rugby-ball head who enjoyed hurling hand grenades of mischief into every interaction. Whenever we think of Rainbow, it’s this cast of four main characters that comes to mind, but they weren’t the original quartet, and neither would they close out the show’s long run on television.

This weekend is a big one for Oscar watchers, with two awards ceremonies that often predict key categories. Sunday marks the biggest night of the year in British film, with the BAFTAs, whose winners often mirror those of the Oscars, taking place. But first, the biggest names in directing came out for the Directors Guild of America Awards. Judd Apatow returned to host the DGAs, which honor outstanding achievement in directing film, television, and commercials.
The feature film nominees at the DGAs were almost identical to the Best Director nominees at the Oscars, with winner Jane Campion (“The Power of the Dog”) competing against Paul Thomas Anderson (“Licorice Pizza”), Steven Spielberg (“West Side Story”), and Kenneth Branagh (“Belfast”. The only difference is that the DGAs swapped in Denis Villeneuve (“Dune”) for Ryûsuke Hamaguchi (“Drive My Car”).
On the television side, “Succession” and “Ted Lasso” have absolutely dominated the nominations. “Ted Lasso...

Jane Campion has been named the best feature-film director of 2021 by the Directors Guild of America for “The Power of the Dog.” She is the second consecutive female director to win after Chloe Zhao’s victory last year for “Nomadland,” and the third overall after Zhao and Kathryn Bigelow (“The Hurt Locker”), who won in 2010 and was also on hand for the ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
“I’m here because I care about women having voices,” Campion said in her acceptance speech. She had been the prohibitive favorite going into the DGA Awards, just as she is in the Best Director category at the Academy Awards — and the fact that she won even at the end of a marathon DGA ceremony during which one person after another had paid homage to her fellow nominee Steven Spielberg suggests that the rest of awards season will be smooth sailing for her.

The 74th Directors Guild of America Awards took place on Saturday, March 12 at 7:30 p.m. Pt with Judd Apatow hosting the in-person, non-televised ceremony. (Read our minute-by-minute live blog.) These kudos honored the best helmers of the year in movies and television, as voted on by more than 18,000 members of the directing guild. Scroll down for the 2022 DGA Awards winners list in three film and eight TV categories.
The all-important feature film category is one of the most telling bellwethers for the Best Director Oscar. The guild and the academy have only disagreed eight times over the past seven decades, including in 2019 when Sam Mendes (“1917”) won the DGA but Bong Joon Ho (“Parasite”) claimed the Oscar. Will this year’s winner follow the path of so many prior champs? Reminder: four of the guild’s nominees also reaped Oscar bids: Jane Campion (“The Power of the Dog”), Steven Spielberg...

It’s a game I’ve played for some time, creating a soundtrack for each of my novels. I suppose once it was solely a distraction activity, and certainly an indulgence, but now it feels an important part of my writing process. After the first draft, and during the first readthrough to take stock, I start gathering tracks that evoke the tone of the novel, or the characters, or particular scenes. I often include references to specific music in my stories and books, and often they’ll make it into the soundtrack playlist, but not always – the soundtrack is usually less literal than that.
Like many writers, even if I begin a novel with a clear, detailed plan, that may only really cover plot and structure, whereas themes only emerge after the first draft. During a readthrough I’ll spot threads or commonalities, which will often have been included unconsciously,...

L.A. singer-songwriter Wrabel has teamed up with his frequent collaborator Kesha for a new song, “Since I Was Young.”

On “The Voice” season 18 finale on Tuesday, Todd Tilghman pulled off a win over Thunderstorm Artis, who had been the frontrunner all season long. In our overnight poll, 31% of those weighing in wanted Thunderstorm to win and think that he was robbed of the season 18 title. In the lead-up to “The Voice” finale on Monday (May 18), we polled viewers to see who they want to win. Their clear favorite in our Top 5 rankings of the season 18 artists is Thunderstorm Artis, who enjoys a sizeable lead with 37% of the total tally as of this writing. He is being coached by rookie Nick Jonas.
However Artis better watch out for the lone woman in the Top 5, Toneisha Harris, who has polled a full quarter of the vote in our best to worst power rankings. Remember, Harris won the Top 9 Instant Save. That sudden death showdown gave her another chance to impress “The Voice” viewers with her powerhouse vocals on the Minnie Ripperton soul classic “Lovin’ You.”
Harris is coached by six-time champion Blake Shelton as is Todd Tilghman, who has just 13% of the total tally. Sitting in between these two artists on the poll results chart is coach...

Paul L. Vasquez, the burly but big-hearted nature lover who became an internet sensation in 2010 after posting his awe-struck reaction to a double rainbow, died Saturday in Central California, The Modesto Bee reports.
A cause of death has yet to be announced, although in recent weeks Vasquez had been posting on Facebook that he’d been feeling sick with a high fever and trouble breathing. On May 5th, he said he was tested for Covid-19, and though he said he’d get the results back in two days he never shared an update.

Grace Leer had a more unusual journey into the Top 20 than her “American Idol” counterparts this season. The 28-year old who works in technology sales in Nashville, Tennessee had to win her spot with the first public vote, where she defeated fellow country artist Lauren Mascitti. Leer was one of 20 Season 18 finalists featured on the “American Idol” special, “This is Me” airing on April 12 and April 19 on ABC.
Besides being about music, “American Idol” is about people, their stories and their dreams. Host Ryan Seacrest narrates this deep dive into the contestants where we hear more personal stories, see highlights from their audition process and learn what it took for them to convince judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan to select them as finalists.
Leer competed on “American Juniors” when she was just 11 years old, but even then she impressed Seacrest, who also hosted that spin-off. “I think...

Another week, another amazing song cover from Ben Platt! On Saturday, the Pitch Perfect actor blessed his Instagram followers with a stunning rendition of Sam Smith's 2013 hit "Lay Me Down." Boasting his incredible vocals and piano skills, the 26-year-old star crooned the ballad with ease and sent chills right down our spines. "I ♥️ you @samsmith," he captioned the heartfelt video.
Platt's latest clip is a part of his weekly self-isolation sets, which have brought us so much joy. He previously covered "Rainbow" by Kacey Musgraves, "All I Ask" by Adele, and "Needy" by Ariana Grande. Do we sense a compilation album in the future? We can only hope. Watch his Smith number above, then fall down the rabbit hole of all his best at-home performances.

Oh, the humanity. On 4/20, Kacey Musgraves found herself without a single joint to spark up. “We’re completely out of weed. Not even a crumb, not a shred, no dust, not even like a Cdb joint — so, that’s fun,” she lamented during a nonetheless satisfying appearance on Willie Nelson’s “Come and Toke It” 4/20 livestream. Dressed appropriately in green satin pajamas, Musgraves sang two songs off her Grammy-winning Golden Hour, “Lonely Weekend” and “Slow Burn.”

Kacy Musgraves's iconic single "Rainbow" is all about holding on to hope even in the darkest of times, so it's no surprise that the Grammy winner chose to sing it for the One World: Together at Home special. The first-of-its-kind global broadcast event, which aired on multiple networks on April 18, aimed to celebrate the healthcare workers working on the front lines against the Covid-19 outbreak and uplift the spirits of people around the globe.
Live from her living room, Musgraves revealed that her song choice was mainly inspired by all the rainbows that she's seen online, a symbol that everything will be alright in time. As the singer launched into an emotional performance, rainbows flashed on the screen, further emphasizing the symbol's powerful optimism in a time it's sorely needed. "It's going to be alright," the singer said, ending her performance by blowing a kiss to the camera. "Everyone stay strong and stay inside.

At this point, calling Ben Platt talented is a massive understatement. Let me direct you to his latest singing video as one reason why. On Saturday, the 26-year-old Pitch Perfect star posted his cover of Ariana Grande's "Needy," in which he sang in the same key as Grande. Yes, Platt's vocal range is just that amazing. "One never changes an Ari key," he wrote in the caption. Unsurprisingly, his followers were amazed, commenting on his musical knack. Even Frozen actor Josh Gad was in awe, tweeting, "How are you so good?"
Platt's latest rendition is the fourth installment of his weekly indoor concerts. He kicked things off on March 21 with a performance of "Rainbow" by Kacey Musgraves. Since then, he's crooned Adele's "All I Ask" and Robyn's "Dancing on My Own.
