Shipwreck (2014)
*** (out of 4)
There was a shipwreck on the coast of Lampedusa that killed three hundred and sixty people. One survivor briefly tells his story and how two of his friends were killed. In the middle of this we see caskets being loaded onto a dock and ship as grieving family members watch. SHIPWRECK is certainly a haunting movie but I guess that could go without saying since you're pretty much watching loved ones finally hit with the fact that family members are dead. This is certainly a well-made film but at the same time I must admit that I thought it crossed the line in regards to good taste. I say that because I'm really not sure these grieving people needed a camera around capturing these hard moments. To be clear, this wasn't the only camera around capturing this stuff but I still don't really know the morals of filming something like this. With that said, there's no question that there's some excellent cinematography here that captures everything that's going on. The cinematography basically just has the camera floating around from one location to the next but it packs a nice little punch.
