WWE Payback 2016 on May 22 will be in Newark, New Jersey, with the Prudential Center announcing the ticket sale with an image of Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns.
The choice of picture could be a clue that the two men will be wrestling each other for the WWE Championship at the event. Ambrose has been on a slow burn heel turn for a long time, and the expectation was that he’d be feuding with Reigns this spring for the WWE Title. The Payback image is strong evidence that WWE are indeed going down that route.
With a main event push towards Reigns’ title, it could mean Ambrose is due to go over Brock Lesnar at April’s WrestleMania. Dave Meltzer has confirmed that Ambrose Lesnar is the booking for Mania, after WWE decided to drop the planned Bray Wyatt Lesnar match. As for Reigns, he is looking like a...

So much has happened in the WWE Universe in the last twelve months that it’s hard to believe that Payback 2014 was the last time the The Shield were together, having split following Seth Rollins’s shocking betrayal on the following night’s Raw. It was very apt, then, that the main event for Payback 2015, a Fatal 4-Way match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship featured all three former members of The Shield as well as Randy Orton, who they had demolished as part of Evolution at Payback 2014.
One particular moment stood out, when Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose and defending champion Seth Rollins momentarily joined forces to triple powerbomb Orton on the commentator’s table, sending the audience wild in the process, but any hopes for a Shield reunion were dashed after Ambrose and Reigns turned down Rollins’s attempt to have them put their fists together in the old Shield manner.

Okay, so it’s time for one of those B-shows of the annual WWE calendar, Payback, a show that, on-paper, sounds okay, but isn’t offering too much in terms of fresh or exciting new feuds in my view. We’ll see how the matches go, shall we?
The opening match of Payback sees Sheamus taking on Dolph Ziggler. These two top-class workers wrestled at the Extreme Rules pay per view too, and I’ve seen them wrestle so many times over the years, yet I was happy to see it again here at Payback. The two of them have chemistry that is undeniable, and in my view, this match, along with the tag team title match that I’ll talk about shortly, stole the show. Just a great back and forth contest that saw the heel Sheamus defeat a bloody Ziggler with his brogue kick. Excellent match.

There’s still weeks to go until WWE presents their next Pay-Per-View, Battleground on the WWE Network. Events are still offered via more traditional means, which is why they’re still classed as PPV events, but numbers have obviously fallen dramatically since the company started their own subscription-based model last year.
For example, WWE Payback, which took place on May 17th, 2015 managed just 54,000 buys in total. Only 19,000 of those were from the United States, with the remaining 35,000 coming from overseas. The show was headlined by a Fatal-4-Way encounter, as Seth Rollins defended the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against challengers Randy Orton, Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose.
It’s interesting to note that the overall number is down from 2014’s Payback show, which pulled in 67,000 buys. That event was capped off by a bumper No Holds Barred Elimination match, pitting The Shield against Evolution (Randy Orton, Batista and...

The opening match on the “Kick-off” show saw Stardust lose to R-Truth. A “surprise” match, this was little more than what we see each week on television, and did nothing for either of them really. Truth winning is pretty silly, and goes further into showing how far Cody has fallen since a couple of years ago when he was getting monster pops alongside his brother, Goldust, in tag title matches with The Shield. Oh dear. The second kick-off match saw Damien “Macho Mandow” Sandow and Curtis “Axelmania” Axel, dressed as Randy Savage and Hulk Hogan, take on The Ascension. I’m not...

Baltimore played host to WWE Payback last night, and the general consensus seems to be that it was solid night of wrestling, marred by a few moments of nonsensical booking.
The I Quit match had a confusing ending (was Lana quitting for Rusev or just translating) but some striking visuals, like the exploding pyro or the suplex through a steel railing. The main event was overbooked, but the Shield reunion was a magic mini-moment. that would move even the moodiest mark. The card was stuffed with rematches, the majority of which were under-built, but all the wrestlers had good chemistry, especially the tag match.
It was an up-and-down night, and WWE Creative hasn’t made their job any easier by scheduling their next PPV to take place in a mere fortnight. Elimination Chamber matches essentially sell themselves, especially with the guarantee of a new Intercontinental champion, but with such a tight turnaround,...

WWE Payback is less than 24 hours old, but there’s already a distinct impression that the company could have saved themselves a lot of hassle by simply bypassing the event altogether and looking forward to Elimination Chamber. Nonetheless, what looked on paper to be a relatively humdrum card actually came together pretty nicely, and even the matches fans considered as filler worked out well.
The longest match on the card was the one most predicted to last a lengthy duration – John Cena vs. Rusev in an ‘I Quit’ encounter went just a few minutes short of half an hour, with the main event Fatal Four Way for the WWE World Heavyweight Title also going in excess of 20 minutes. Of course, the WWE Divas were allotted the shortest time on the main card, only going a little over 6 minutes, but that was nothing compared to the short, 2-minute collision...

After everything that has happened in Baltimore, WWE brought the fun back to a city surely in need of it. The sports entertainment juggernaut hosted its Payback pay-per-view event Sunday there in front of a lively crowd. They had many moments to cheer for with the superstars working hard to put on a solid card of action. WWE world champion Seth Rollins survived a fatal 4-way for the WWE world championship against challengers Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose and Randy Orton. Kane, the onscreen director of operations and J&J Security interfered in the proceedings in the favor of the title holder. There … Continue reading →

Getting low is one thing, but getting back up… John Cena, known for his incredible strength, just proved his brawn once again with his latest video tweet showcasing him squatting a whopping 396 pounds. The WWE sensation and 15-time World Champion is no stranger to vigorous workouts and strict diet plans, as he's got the reputation of doing whatever it takes for the sake of improving his craft. "The speed of life gives us chances to make excuses. Define goals, take a pause, and realize you can move mountains," the Total Divas star tweeted alongside his epic slow-motion clip. The trending video could be ammunition to get Alexander Rusev, his upcoming WWE Payback opponent, shaking in his...

WWE Payback is just around the corner and a number of scores will be settled.
Well, that’s the whole premise of the show isn’t it?
What would be the point in Rusev recapturing the United States Championship and then having to go into yet another programme with John Cena? If Rusev wins then payback is his, if Cena wins then he has won the war.
We’ve seen enough of most of the rivalries on the card, let us all move on.
There have been plenty of instances where payback has been more than deserved over the years in WWE, while there has also been those moments when payback was more than deserved but one half of the divide got away before it could be sought after.
It’s the nature of the beast. Story lines intertwine and go back and forth. If someone upsets someone,...

This week’s Raw was the last episode before Payback, so we got a better sense of what to expect from the PPV on Sunday night. What was interesting is that it looks like WWE has a full card ready, but they have advertised six matches officially with a couple of others very likely to take place.
Keep in mind that WWE is taping Smackdown tonight, so they will probably make other matches official at that show.
Here are the six matches that are official as well as notes on the others that are likely going to take place.
WWE Title: Seth Rollins vs. Randy Orton vs. Roman Reigns vs. Dean Ambrose – It’s a fatal fourway match where the first fall gets the win. A stipulation was added on Raw by Triple H where he told Kane that if Rollins doesn’t leave Payback as WWE Champion...

Extreme Rules is over and now the road to WWE Payback is here. We already know the main event of the May 17 PPV is going to be Seth Rollins defending the WWE Title against Randy Orton and Roman Reigns while John Cena will have one more match with Rusev, which will be an I Quit match. Those matchups aren’t that fresh or new, but that’s how WWE is these days. The product just isn’t that exciting right now.
It’s not necessarily a talent problem. There are so many talented performers in WWE on both the main roster and Nxt. The problem, most of the time, revolves around the creative team. They just don’t do a very good job of putting together storylines that are exciting or worth going out of your way to see. It’s the same basic stuff all the time.

An officially released promo for WWE’s May pay-per-view WWE Payback has led to speculation online that it could be Seth Rollins defending his World Title against Randy Orton and Roman Reigns.
You can see the promo for yourself below, which certainly hints towards Seth Rollins successfully defending his title against challenger Randy Orton at this Sunday’s WWE Extreme Rules pay-per-view.
Dave Meltzer from F4Wonline.com had speculated on a recent Wrestling Observer Live podcast that the creative direction at one point was for Roman Reigns to work a program with Kane after he is done with the Big Show this weekend. Those plans look now to have been switched to putting Reigns back in the main event picture.
Meanwhile, as reported earlier, it looks like a feud between Bray Wyatt and Ryback is the planned direction for both of those upper mid carders. It was...
