- It's 1953 and Junior McCaully, going on twelve, is ready to call it quits. Chubby, he's bullied at school, stinks at baseball and stuck at the Lucky U Ranch, a blue collar trailer court in the Arizona desert. His hard working, single mom knows something's amiss, but feels powerless. She has her own issues to deal with including a proposal of marriage from her much older boss...not the love of her life, but an escape from the Lucky U, and worth considering for Junior's sake. She's not divorced from her mysterious husband, whom we know nothing about except he was in the war, until his sudden appearance. Junior's rich fantasy life doesn't prepare him for the arrival of Melissa, a tad older, a beautiful dancer, who's great at baseball. And she's from Hollywood! Okay, North Hollywood. Over a weekend she makes a ball player out of him while imparting valuable life skills. Junior soon sees Melissa's life isn't so perfect, with two alcoholic parents. Melissa saves Junior, but no one can save her.—Ginia Desmond
