An intriguing mystery.
Sleepin_Dragon1 February 2023
The UCOS team investigate the death of a pub landlord, who's body was found after a fire at his pub, top suspect is illegal Turkish immigrant, barmaid Asye Ersoy.

A pretty good story, with an interesting plot, good set of suspects, and a couple of amusing moments. Full of intrigue, and it's one of those episodes where the killer could have been one of about five or six possibles, you are made to wait until the end.

I have to get the minor irritation off my chest, Danny, Lyndhurst was fantastic in the previous episode, he was actually given a good script, and performed, here though he was back to being Captain know it all, he was so irritating, is there anything he wasn't an expert as, it's too much, fruit machines, football, civil wars, the list goes on.

Two cracking performances, Niamh Cusack and Phil Davies, two truly brilliant actors, both really delivered.

A good episode, 7/10.

Pubs and Fruit Machines, a decent episode in season 11

Gerry gets some good scenes this episode, with wine, CAR GPS, and a bartender, not all at the same time. Otherwise, the main case in the show works pretty well, as an illegal immigrant employee of a pub owner burned in a fire is found. It has the usual twists, things weren't what they seemed, and the team finally gets the killer.

Niamh Cusack guest stars
safenoe4 June 2024
Warning: Spoilers
In Vino Veritas guest stars Niamh Cusack as Joanne Gibson, and Niamh was famous in Heartbeat, and also she is from the famous Irish Cusack acting dynasty, and also is the aunt to actor Max Irons.

Dan's superhuman skills soccer skills on display in In Vino Veritas was a bit left-field (no pun intended at all) and really it didn't add much to New Tricks really init.

This episode was quite a serious episode, very multi-layered. Anyway, New Tricks is an English TV police drama that I discovered maybe in 2016 or 2017, and whilst Amanda Redman was sorely missed towards the end of the series, it still had worthy episodes init.

Death of a publican
Tweekums30 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
The case of a publican found murdered in his burnt out pub in 2010 is reopened when the Turkish illegal immigrant who was working there is caught by immigration control. UCOS talk to her and she says she was woken by the smoke although there is no sign of smoke damage on her possessions. Returning to the scene of the crime they see the pub is up and running again with the dead man's wife still working as the landlady. They also talk to two other people connected with the pub; the victim's brother, a slot machine salesman and a former city trader who is now a successful Kent wine maker. Soon just about everybody is a suspect as motives appear. Away from the case Sasha decides the team should get involved in the local community… by taking part in a five aside football tournament!

This was an enjoyable episode with plenty of suspects… some of whom were guilty of other crimes but not the murder. When we finally learn who did it and why it is all rather tragic. Along the way there are some nice comic moments; Gerry dealing with a voice activated sat-nav and Danny's surprisingly in-depth knowledge of classic pub fruit machines to name just two. The cast did a solid job and the fact that it included more than one well known guest star meant you couldn't solve the case by saying 'the famous one did it'!

In wine, truth
TheLittleSongbird20 March 2018
Have always been a big fan of detective/mystery shows from a fairly young age, well since starting secondary school.

'Inspector Morse', 'A Touch of Frost', 'Midsomer Murders' (in its prime), 'Law and Order', 'Inspector George Gently', 'Criminal Minds', 'Murder She Wrote', you name them to name a few. 'New Tricks' has also been a favourite from the start (despite not being the same without the original cast in recent years). Although it can be corny at times (in an endearing sort of way) it has always been perfect for helping me relax in the evenings. Something that was needed during all the hard times endured in school.

My review summary refers to the English translation of the episode's title, just in case anybody's wondering. "In Vino Veritas" is a very good episode indeed, in the top 3 perhaps of the best Season 11 episodes and one of the best of the post-prime 'New Tricks' period (basically since Brian and Alun Armstrong left).

The case is a very intriguing and compelling one, not too simplistic, not too convoluted as well as not too familiar even when not novel. It has enough twists and surprises to keep one guessing, and the ending is among the latter seasons' most tragic.

Will admit to starting to get used to the new team dynamic and they work pretty well together. It is charming and likeable, if not as sparkling or fresh as the original one.

Confidently and smartly written, "In Vino Veritas" has a seriousness without being too serious and has a few comic touches without jarring tonally. All the replacements of the original characters are now well settled if not the same.

Visually, "In Vino Veritas" is slick and stylish as ever. The music is a good fit and the theme song (sung with gusto by none other by Dennis Waterman himself) is one of the catchiest for any detective/mystery show and of any show in the past fifteen years or so.

All four leads are great and the episode is solidly acted in support too.

Overall, great. 9/10 Bethany Cox
