The third-person shooter genre is an odd part of gaming history. It’s much younger than you think, it’s dipped in and out of popularity over the years, and, culturally, it doesn’t necessarily enjoy the same mainstream renown that Fps games are typically afforded. There are times when you have to stop and really consider the third-person shooter to be its own genre.
Yet, the third-person shooter’s influence can be felt in so many aspects of the modern gaming industry. An important part of the evolution of true 3D gaming, third-person shooters quickly became a vehicle that allowed developers to experiment with how players were going to move through, interact with, and, yes, fight in increasingly complex 3D environments. Their cinematic style and chaotic action helped them stand out early on, and they eventually laid the foundation for the combat that so many modern titles rely on to some degree.

The prospect of wandering around large, expansive game worlds used to fill me with excitement. Upon escaping the tutorial dungeon for the very first time in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, I distinctly remember being overwhelmed by the sheer scale of that virtual playground rolling out before me, and the endless adventures that it tacitly promised. My awestruck 10-year-old brain couldn’t quite fathom that I was free to go in literally any direction and that, no matter which compass point I chose to follow, I was guaranteed to stumble across some memorable characters, tantalising locations or intriguing questlines.
As a kid who wasn’t yet able to buy their own games — and so usually had to wait until either Christmas or my birthday to get ahold of new releases — the idea of something having that kind of mileage seemed too good to be true. After all, I could make...

Dead Island 2’s best moments are also its most ridiculous. Discovering that you can acquire superpowers. Setting your feet on fire and dropkicking a horde of zombies into a pile of gasoline cans. Finding an axe that’s basically a flame thrower and a pistol that’s actually a rocket launcher. These are the kinds of moments that make Dead Island 2 feel special.
It shouldn’t be surprising that Dead Island 2 functions best as an absurd game. Most of Dead Island 2’s marketing has centered on its parody humor, silly characters, and over-the-top gore. By the time you actually finish Dead Island 2, though, you may be surprised to find that the game just isn’t ridiculous enough. For all its obvious attempts at embracing chaos, the fact of the matter is that Dead Island 2 spends too much time trying to be a much more conventional game.
Specifically, Dead Island 2 too often feels like Dying Light.

The Challenge champ Ashley Mitchell etched her name in franchise history when she kept the million-dollar prize for herself instead of sharing it with teammate Hunter Barfield, citing his treatment of her as a reason. She has since revealed the origin of their disagreement.

The canceled video game adaptation of The Dark Knight is one of the more fascinating and infamous pieces of game industry lore. To some, the title is just a curious footnote in video game history. To others (mostly those who invested in the project or lost their jobs over it), it’s a dark reminder of an idea that is perhaps best left forgotten.
I see the game a little differently, though. While it’s easy to look at these kinds of projects that were never released and wonder what could have been, the fascinating thing about the canceled Dark Knight game is that wondering what would have happened if the game had been released is the quickest way to distract yourself from the many ways that the world of gaming was changed by the fact it wasn’t released.

A new action thriller starring Bruce Willis is now available to watch on demand, but you may not want to. Hard Kill is currently sitting at the infamous 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but for those of you feeling intrepid enough to check it out, this is what to expect:
Mercenaries find themselves racing the clock to stop a world-changing computer program from being triggered.
In Hard Kill’s defence, there is a caveat to lend to its 0% rating. Only 12 Tomato-certified critics have reviewed it so far, a much smaller sample size than you’d see for mainstream releases. I can also offer the fact that it clocks in at just under 100 minutes, meaning that you won’t be subjected for very long. However, awful films have a habit of making even the smallest units of time stretch into infinity, so even that may not be a positive.

With a number of major story events and gameplay elements from the original Resident Evil 3 notably missing from this year’s remake, many fans have been left feeling somewhat disappointed by Jill Valentine’s reimagined escape from Raccoon City. RPG-lite choices when encountering Nemesis and the entire clock tower section are perhaps two of the most notable absentees lost in translation during the remake’s development, with the hope being that such missing content could potentially be restored down the road in the form of Dlc.
Unfortunately, that’s unlikely to be the case, according to producer Peter Fabiano. Speaking to Siliconera in a recent interview encompassing the entirety of Resident Evil 3‘s development process, Fabiano, when asked if any tweaks and/or updates are in the works, responded by labelling the sequel a “finished product.”

Enter the police station? Fight with the monster? Let a bunch of boxes hit you in the face as you dangle over a sinkhole in an auto body shop? Those were just some of the live choices one could make in the original Resident Evil 3‘s dynamic situations. They offered players more replayability in the game, which was shorter than its predecessor, Resident Evil 2, due to an abbreviated development cycle. In the upcoming remake, however, Capcom’s decided to do away with the original system. But why? Well, now we know.
Speaking to IGN recently, producer Peter Fabiano explained the decision while giving some background on the concept of live selection as a whole. Since game development has advanced so much, time crunch really wasn’t an issue for the remake. Removing the live choice selection system allowed Capcom to “tell a more consistent story,” too, which allows...

The return of a former Splinter Cell creative director has fans speculating about the return of the franchise itself.
Maxime Beland, the creative director of Splinter Cell: Conviction and Splinter Cell: Blacklist, has returned to Ubisoft.
Reports indicate that Beland has returned to Ubisoft as a member of a creative team within the studio that will seemingly preside over the creative process of all upcoming games. It's not clear at this time what the extent of their reach is, but it certainly sounds like future Ubisoft titles will have to get at least some kind of approval from them.
Beland started at Ubisoft in 1998 as a tester and eventually became a creative director and game design director at the studio. He's contributed to titles like Assassin's Creed, Rainbow Six: Vegas, Far Cry 4, Far Cry Primal, Far Cry 5, and the aforementioned Splinter Cell games. He left for Epic Games...

As was the case with last year’s terrific remake, Capcom’s upcoming reimagining of Resident Evil 3 is unlikely to be exactly how you remember it. Yes, Raccoon City will once again serve as the setting, and yes, Jill Valentine will be hounded by the monstrous Nemesis at every turn (i.e. core components remain the same), but beyond that? Well, we’re in somewhat uncharted territory right now.
Modern game design has come leaps and bounds since the late 90s, and with the Resident Evil 3: Nemesis now an impressive 20 years old, the studio will (and has) made numerous changes to improve the title where it sees fit. We’ve already seen evidence of such with both Jill and Carlos‘ total – and infinitely more realistic-looking – redesigns, but what of those tweaks that go deeper than ‘simple’ cosmetic changes?

Capcom’s long-awaited Resident Evil 3 remake is due to arrive in just a few short months and, as was the case with last year’s stellar reimagining, fans should expect a number of changes over the original.
First and foremost, of course, is the introduction of a brand new multiplayer mode. Resident Evil Resistance (formerly Project Resistance) is a bespoke, asymmetrical affair that pits four survivors against one Mastermind featuring hordes of undead and biologically altered animals from the series’ past and present. Mr. X, Lickers, Cerberus: you’re going to have one hell of a time escaping from this particular nightmare, not least due to the player-controlled Mastermind hounding you every step of the way.
That’s the most major addition accounted for, then, but what else? Besides the immediately obvious – totally redesigned characters and environments – improvements, Capcom has revealed a number of further adjustments in a recent interview.

The confirmation that Capcom are working on some kind of Resident Evil co-op game, codenamed “Project: Resistance,” took us by surprise. With the successes of Resident Evil 7 and the Resident Evil 2 remake, most assumed that the next title we’d hear about would be another single-player adventure. But what we saw in those shots indicated something in the vein of Resident Evil: Outbreak, perhaps mixed in with some of the Mercenaries-style score-chasing seen in Umbrella Chronicles.
But now we’re hearing that this mode may be just a component of a full remake of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. This was the final game in the original trilogy, which followed Jill Valentine as she tried to escape from Raccoon City while pursued by the hulking and almost unstoppable Nemesis monster.
It’s an undeniably great title, though has a lot less content than Resident Evil 2 ever did. For one, the...

If you miss Splinter Cell's multiplayer, this new Overwatch mode might just be the next best thing.
Overwatch fans have used the game's new Workshop mode to recreate Splinter Cell's famous Spies vs Mercenaries multiplayer.
In case you didn't know, Blizzard recently added a new Workshop mode to Overwatch that lets players tweak just about any aspect of the game. Players have already used this mode to do things like recreate nerfed character abilities, allow Mei to ice slide across the map, and turning off gravity. However, some players have dove deep into this mode's options and created some truly elaborate content.
This new Spies vs. Mercs mode is certainly one of the best things we've seen from Overwatch's Workshop mode so far. The basic set-up sees a team of spies (represented by Sombra) facing off against a team of mercenaries. The spies need to capture 2 out of 3 objectives,...

When your father is a god, your life is bound to be pretty interesting. As a result, it is never less than astonishing how often the story of Hercules ignores the rich source material, transplanting the demigod to whatever environment is currently in vogue with diminished results. Twice this year, we were treated to variant interpretations of the Greek myth with vastly different results. Coming in second and by far the inferior of the two, Brett Ratner’s Hercules is one of the weakest films of the year. Once more one wonders how Ratner keeps getting hired since clearly his limited directorial vision has been spent.

One of the most iconic action characters of the past 35 years is Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley, who has fought various xenomorphs through the course of the Alien quadrilogy. With The Expendables 3 opening in theatres this past weekend, talk had heated up in recent months of an all-female spinoff of the franchise, centred on a similar conceit of reuniting action heroines of yesteryear and present day. With the writers and director set, speculation had turned to the starring roles, with Weaver’s name put forward by many, including producer Sylvester Stallone. However, the Hollywood Reporter has now announced that Weaver has formally passed on the project, leaving the movie without a single confirmed castmember for now.
While this is a setback for the movie, particularly as Stallone himself had expressed interest in Weaver’s involvement, the project is unlikely to die as a result. Weaver’s exit, however, may...
