Three low-key tales of three decent but scuffling men converging on backwater Argentine burg for New Year's Eve. Divorced taxi driver doughtily tries to connect with daughter; largely succeeds. Flat tire diverts shopworn magician to lonely tollkeeper; she gets film's most moving moment. Aging singer gets furloughed for hayseed nightclub. Lots of halting dialogue in low-wattage Antonioni on the pampas. Good actors make best of underwritten parts; film suggests rather than embodies depth. Nice to see that rustic Argentina not all that different from rural USA. Amiable slice of life is a bit twee.
