- The true story of William and Ebralie Mwizerwa were living in Rwanda, Africa. In the 1980's during the Clinton Administration, this conflict was during the worst time in the nation's history. A horrible genocide had erupted between the Hutu and Tutsi tribe in Rwanda. This was when the family came under attack, becoming afraid for their very lives. Each street and every neighborhood was being purged. Each day, they did not know if this would be their last due to all the impeding dangers. The family planned escapes, but the roads being blocked made it impossible to travel. Finally, William escaped on his own as a refugee with the intent to to bring his family to America once he got out. The journey for William would take months and he wrote to his wife every single day. Serendipitously, William while in Nashville, would meet a financial advisor, Randy Hartley. William and Randy began to establish a relationship and became friends. In the meantime, Randy had his own private war to fight. Back in Africa, 800,000 people were executed in less than 100 days and the Mwizerwa family was waiting to get out. The Tutsi and Hutu tribe on the outward appearance, were similar. However, the hatred between them was driven over inequality and socioeconomic prejudice. In Africa, the pain was great and while the Mwizerwa family was hurting, back in the United States, the Hartley family had their own emotional pain. Both of these family entities had their own private war which happened in Africa and in the United States. Both sets of parents and their children suffered, but the people in Africa experienced trauma like few would ever know in a lifetime. During this time, the Mwizerwa family even had betrayed their own ancestors. In order to heal, Randy Hartley took his emotionally wounded daughter to Africa in order to find hope. This emotional story is embedded with faith. William and Randy bonded as friends through the courage to focus on forgiveness, even during the trauma.
