“Dope will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no dope,” we hear in The Freak Brothers, Tubi’s first animated original series. It just about sums up the series. Pot is legal now, and all over the San Francisco neighborhood. It still costs money, but now it makes money, and capital means licensing, and licenses are for dogs. The characters at the center of The Freak Brother have mange, scratch themselves on rugs, but they have a cat, who Bogarts every joint.
The sad thing about The Freak Brothers is the jokes don’t go as far as it seems the series wants to go. The counterculture of the 1960s was an antidote to the culture. Cartoonists like Robert Crumb, who invented Fritz the Cat, Mr. Natural and Devil Girl, and Gilbert Shelton, who created The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers...

The Staten Island vampires mourned a huge loss in the Season 3 finale of What We Do in the Shadows… but it led to a number of new beginnings.
The vamps are all sad following the demise of their roommate Colin Robinson last week. (“Vampires are no strangers to death. They deal with it every day with the people that they kill,” Guillermo says, but this is different.) They sit for a family portrait, as is tradition after a vampire death, joined by The Guide, Baron Afanas and The Sire — and painted by Donal Logue! A vampire’s birthday party had us feeling festive this week on What We Do in the Shadows… but then a shocking exit spoiled all the fun.
Thursday’s episode begins with Nandor held captive in the vampires’ subterranean prison cell after his fitness-inspired escape last week. Nadja says he’s “brainwashed,” but an exhausted Nandor lists off all of his roommates’ many shortcomings before declaring: He’s taking a “super slumber.” That’s a sort of vampire hibernation where they sleep for up to 300 years, waking up to a (hopefully) completely different world. As Nandor says his farewells, Nadja weeps,...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Wonder Years, Season 1, Episode 1, “Pilot.”] Although it takes place in the same era (the late 1960s), ABC’s reboot of The Wonder Years is telling a different story from the original as the focus shifts from Kevin Arnold (Fred Savage) to Dean Williams (Elisha “Ej” Williams). While Dean is a bit like Kevin because of his awkward youth, there’s a distinct difference as the series looks at life within Dean’s relatively affluent Black community. The premiere focuses on Dean’s desire to find the place he fits best, a quest that’s harder to achieve than he’d originally thought. (Credit: ABC/Erika Doss) Viewers meet his best friends Cory Long (Amari O’Neil) and Brad Hitman (Julian Lerner), as well as the girl he’s got goo-goo eyes for, Keisa Clemmons (Milan Ray). Now attending class at a desegregated school, Dean has to contend with the attitudes...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Ordinary Joe, Season 1, Episode 1, “Pilot.”] Fall TV is starting out strong with NBC’s new drama Ordinary Joe following James Wolk‘s Joe Kimbreau as he explores the three different paths his life could take after college graduation. Digging into the concept of “what if,” the opening episode packs in plenty of twists and turns, courtesy of creators Russel Friend and Garrett Lerner. Tracking Joe in timelines where he’s a rockstar, nurse, and cop, the series weaves an intriguing web of overlapping characters and conflicts, particularly when it comes to romance and family. (Credit: Sandy Morris/NBC) One thing tying the three worlds together is Joe’s past which includes his father’s death on 9/11. Despite his lack of onscreen presence, Christopher Kimbreau looms large and that’s no coincidence. “Episode 2 really focuses on that a lot,” teases Friend. “Since [Joe’s dad died] when he was 14, that’s a part of ...

From football (the actual footie kind) to monarchy to Michaela Coel, it was a great night to be British at the 2021 Emmy Awards.
Netflix had the biggest night of any streamer or network, with its Queen Elizabeth drama The Crown running a clean sweep of its categories and taking home seven awards. On the comedy side of things, Ted Lasso was nearly as dominant, winning nearly every award it was up for save for writing, directing, and lead actress in a comedy series (all three of which went to HBO Max’s Hacks). Mare of Easttown, I May Destroy You, and The Queen’s Gambit all split the limited series honors, with the Netflix chess series taking home the big prize.
It was a quiet ceremony for Marvel Studios, which was making its Primetime Emmy awards debut thanks to Disney+’s WandaVision. Though the series didn’t win any hardware Sunday night,...

J.J. Watt didn’t make it to the Super Bowl — but he did touch down in Studio 8H this weekend.
While not a natural-born comedian, the defensive end for the Houston Texans seemed genuinely delighted to be hosting Saturday Night Live. His charm made up for his lackluster delivery throughout a subpar show, which fumbled multiple sketches in the stretch between his endearing opening monologue and Weekend Update. Worst of all was when the footballer was asked to sing his way through a Disney satire.

Last May, the network — after passing on Thomas and fellow Ep Heather Mitchell’s initial pilot starring Tyler Posey and Kiele Sanchez — announced that the project would be redeveloped. HBO’s “Game of Thrones” and Amazon Prime Video’s “Fleabag” may be dead and gone, but they are most certainly not forgotten — at least as far as the American Cinema Editors are concerned. The organization announced the Eddie Award winners for TV on Friday night, at a ceremony held at the International Ballroom in the Beverly Hilton, hosted by star of “The Good Place” D’Arcy Carden.
Tim Porter’s work on the epic 82-minute “Game of Thrones” episode “The Long Night” earned him the prize for Best Edited Drama Series For Non-Commercial Television, unsurprising given Porter’s win for the work at the Emmy Awards in September.
The same goes for Gary Dollner for his work on the Season 2 premiere of “Fleabag.” The editor’s work is just the latest accolade garnered by Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s exquisite comedy. That makes two consecutive Eddie wins for Dollner, who won Best...

By now I hope you've read my full "Killing Jesus" report from the set in Morocco, a report that included a number of quotes from veteran John Rhys-Davies, an actor more than willing to offer retrospectives on the entirety of his entire career. Well, it happens that that career includes an intriguing ordered-straight-to-series-and-the-cancelled-before-airing Fox drama named "Hieroglyph" and it happens that "Hieroglyph" also shot in Morocco. And Rhys-Davies actually brought up "that pilot for Fox" of his own volition. "'13 on the air, we don't even need to see the pilot. It's gonna be that good.' Yeah, right," Rhys-Davies said, mocking the network's thought process. "So they screwed everybody's year up by postponing it and postponing it until absolutely five-minutes-to-five on the very last day they said, 'Uh, not gonna do now. No. Can't get scripts of the right quality.' By which time, everyone had cancelled everything else...

All of the things in that headline sound great. Normally I try to steer clear of stories where Writer/Director/Actor X wants to make Movie Y because wish-fulfillment is not the same as announcing a genuine project, but in the case of Travis Beacham and The Curiosity, things are a little different. For one, this isn’t a writer throwing his hat in the ring for a blockbuster that’s already in the works (“Sure, I’ll direct Justice League: Rise of the Planet of Justice!”). For two, Beacham is being moderately open about his concept and the process of making it his directorial debut. From what he’s shared on his personal website, The Principle Fantastic, he’s already shot at least some scenes for a short film that will stand as a proof-of-concept for a film he says, “draws heavily from Celtic mythology (with a slight dash of Teslapunk thrown in) to tell...

A few months ago, Fox paraded their new mid-season Egyptian drama, Hieroglyph, around during their Upfront presentation to mixed reviews from critics. Since then, the network has changed their mind about the series and seven months before the show was scheduled to premiere, Fox has pulled the plug on the action adventure show that last October they gave a straight to series order.
The network chose to skip the pilot process and go straight to series in order to spread the budget out over multiple episodes, but have revealed that the scripts going forward weren’t as strong at they had originally hoped. The series, written by Travis Beacham, was developed several season ago and had set Anne Fricke to be showrunner in March as part of her overall deal with 20th Century.

Even before it has gone to air, Fox has cancelled its ambitious Egyptian action-adventure fantasy series "Hieroglyph".
Set in the world of ancient Egypt, the story follows a notorious thief (Max Brown) who is plucked from prison to serve the Pharaoh, forcing him to navigate palace intrigue, seductive concubines, criminal underbellies and divine sorcerers, as he races to stop the downfall of one of history's greatest civilizations.
Back in the Fall, the network gave the expensive show a straight to series thirteen-episode order. After the first episode was filmed, things were put on hold as the writers began breaking scripts and stories for the rest of the season due to the quality not living up to expectation.

In what might be one of the quickest cancellations ever, Fox is pulling the plug on "Hieroglyph," a drama set in ancient Egypt.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the network decided not to make the series due to "creative reasons." "Hieroglyph" was greenlit just last month by former Fox entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly, who reportedly envisioned it as Fox's version of "Game of Thrones."
Only the pilot had been shot; writers have been working on the other 12 episodes for a midseason premiere. But sources tell THR that the scripts were not at an acceptable quality level.
"Hieroglyph" starred Max Brown as a thief who stayed out of prison by serving the Pharaoh (Reece Ritchie) in navigating "navigating palace intrigue, seductive concubines, criminal underbellies and even a few divine sorcerers."

The network giveth and the network taketh away. Fox has cancelled their new Ancient Egypt dramatic series Hieroglyph. The project was given a straight-to-series order last October by the then-programming chief Kevin Reilly.
Hieroglyph had been scheduled for mid-season. One episode has been shot and several others have been scripted. The show stars John Rhys-Davies, Reece Ritchie, Kelsey Chow, Condola Rashad, Caroline Ford, and Antony Bunsee. EW reports that the writers were given the news of the cancellation earlier today.
