Sundance Institute has laid off nearly a dozen staffers across its departments, representing about 6% of its 180-strong workforce, Deadline has confirmed. The cuts are part of a three- to five-year strategic plan to strengthen the organization amid a challenging economic landscape.
Founded by Robert Redford in 1981, the nonprofit institute runs the annual Sundance Film Festival in Park City — which will run January 19-28 next year — along with labs, fellowships and mentorships that support more than 1,000 artists each year. It also hosts many public programs in the U.S. and around the world.

Cocaine Bear (read our review Here) screenwriter Jimmy Warden has said that he has ideas for multiple sequels to the film, and some movie-goers have already let it be known that they’re hoping and waiting for a movie that would be called Cocaine Shark. But while we wait to see if Cocaine Bear is going to spawn a franchise, the mockbuster masters at The Asylum have unveiled a poster of the mockbuster they have made to cash in on the Cocaine Bear hype: a movie called Attack of the Meth Gator! An exact release date hasn’t been announced, but we can expect to see Attack of the Meth Gator sometime this summer.
We can only assume that Attack of the Meth Gator is going to be about an alligator going on a killing spree after consuming meth, much like Cocaine Bear is about a bear going on a killing spree after consuming cocaine.

The first time Cecil B. DeMille parted the waters of the Red Sea, to film the 1923 version of The Ten Commandments, he did it at Seal Beach, CA, just 30 miles down the Pacific coast from Santa Monica. Three decades later, when Paramount Pictures decided to remake the Old Testament tale in Technicolor and VistaVision, the same director returned to do it again, only this time on location on the Sinai Peninsula with thousands of extras provided by the Egyptian army — no matter that the country’s military was rather busy with urgent geopolitical matters at the time. Both versions were massive hits, with the remake serving as the capper to DeMille’s illustrious career.

Holt McCallany, Aunjanue Ellis and Killian Scott have been tapped as series regulars opposite Courtney B. Vance in AMC’s courtroom drama series 61st Street from BAFTA-winner Peter Moffat. Andrene Ward-Hammond will recur in the series, executive produced by Jordan and and produced by AMC Studios.
Ordered as a two-season television event with eight episodes per season, 61st Street is slated to begin production next month in Chicago for a 2022 premiere. It reunites Ellis and Vance who co-star together on HBO’s Lovecraft Country.
61st Street is a timely and relevant story that echoes projects such as Just Mercy, Clemency as well as When They See Us which earned Ellis an Emmy nomination. It follows Moses Johnson (Tosin Cole), a promising black high school athlete who is swept up into the infamously corrupt Chicago criminal justice system.

Making movies is hard. We should know – we write articles about them and we imagine actually making them is two, maybe three, times as hard (Ok, maybe a lot more).
There’s so many things to be dealing with, ranging from making sure catering are going to be able to provide a varied diet for the crew and that you have actors who can give the work the depth it requires. Of course, it’s very easy to take the easy route – make a product placement deal with Dominos that sees pizzas delivered to the set every day and hire Nicolas Cage.
The one place you’d imagine films wouldn’t skimp is in the creative department. The purpose of the whole enterprise is, after all, to make something entertaining for the audience. Except too often an overt focus on money takes over and a film simply steals entire swathes...
