Good old-fashioned ghost story narration
Leofwine_draca6 October 2016
A straight retelling of the classic ghost story by M. R. James, here read by Robert Powell in much the same way as the BBC (also the producers here) would have Christopher Lee doing so in the Christmas of 2000. Powell is actually pretty good, lending conviction to the story to make us believe that he himself is scared by it. He adds little gestures like the licking of his lips at certain pauses to add to the tale.

Powell is dressed in early 20th century garb along with the room which adds to the spooky atmosphere. Use of key music at some of the more horrific scenes certainly adds to the tale greatly, and of course personally the story is one of my favourites. It's just a shame that these earlier BBC adaptations seem to be so forgotten these days...
