There are Things that Are Unforgiven
claudio_carvalho1 October 2017
After being defeated by King Ecbert, King Horit and his son flee to Kattegat seeking revenge. He asks Ragnar to invite Jarl Borg to team-up with them since he has ships and warriors despite of what he did to Ragnar's family. Rollo travels to Gotland to negotiate with Jarl Borg that accepts the offer. Jarl Borg comes to Kattegat and is surprised by Ragnar's attitude. Meanwhile Athelstan becomes close to King Ecbert that confides some secrets to him. Lagertha returns to her husband that humiliates her in public but she resolves her situation with him.

"Unforgiven" is an unforgettable episode of "Vikings". The invitation of Ragnar to Jarl Borg is deceptive but the conclusion is top-notch. Athelstan's religious conflict is interesting and his relationship with King Ecbert seems to be real. Lagertha is an amazing character and her reacting to the aggression of her husband is fantastic. My vote is eight.

This is not your father's History Channel
A_Different_Drummer20 May 2015
This humble reviewer thought that the History Channel has reached it zenith with the superb Hatfields and McCoys series (which if you missed, you should try to find, it is wonderful) I was wrong. This series is as good as any I have ever seen, almost hypnotic. No matter if you call it historical, or call it current (because of the universal themes of human nature), or you can even call it "Fred" it you want. It is still superbly written and produced drama.

Think about it. Jeffifer Lopez not so long ago spent an entire Hollywood theatrical feature trying to tell the story of a woman who stops taking abuse from her husband, and fights back.

It is this episode, that theme is not only covered, but it is presented better than the Lopez movie, with more viewer impact, and in a matter of only moments.

Leaving ample time for all the other plot arcs to move forward.

Extraordinary.

Unforgiven Really!!!
elo-equipamentos31 March 2017
I've been watching Vikings since the first episode at History channel and when the Blu-ray come out l bought and restarted on the beginning to enjoy the wonderful blu-ray's picture, this Canadian-Irish co-production is probable one of best series nowadays because explore all incursions of the Vikings on British's land and the disastrous effects on entire Island where the kings have to provide a plan to defending your country and other hand the Vikings were in war between the many kingdons, In this episode when Ragnar comeback to your village after a war against the invader Jan Borg, but he was convinced by King Ekbert that makes an alliance with your enemy Jan Borg to together and more strong to do another Invasion on British's land...fantastic episode!!!

A strong moment

For me the most interresting moment in this episode is in the moment between the king Ecbert and Athelstan. Europe did have lost so much knowledge... some realize it, others just did not knew...

Queen Lagertha
amongpixels10 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
"Unforgiven" throws in some surprising turns to the story and one thing is for certain, King Horik is a fool. After breaking the truce with Borg, thinking he can negotiate with King Ecbert with only half his forces & disliking Athelstan (the only man capable of speaking to the Saxons), and then trying to reforge the alliance with Borg are all stupid moves that has put everyone in a worser state (except for Rollo. That's the one positive). So, I feel for everyone except him and I am glad Ragnar did not follow his lead anymore (although poor Borg did seem genuine in his alliance), and I also question Siggy's moves. Can't you just be happy with Rollo, dammit!

The relationship between Athelstan and Ecbert is intriguing and adds further layers to Ecbert - who seems to have an immense appreciation for the Romans and Pagans of the past. Meanwhile, there's a strange "romance" brewing between Bjorn and a towns girl he is interested in, but it ends on a rather peculiar cliffhanger where Bjorn just stares at her breasts?

However, the highlight of all this is Lagertha finally stepping up to Earl Sigvard. And in an excellently memorable moment we see how much everyone else Sigvard rules over also despised him.

Really hated Ragnar in this episode
Shergo714 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Why was Jarl Borg done like that? Very sly and deceiving of Ragnar. It was Horik who caused all this mayhem in the first place, he should be the one to get punished.

What happens when the hero is almost a Nazi?
NortonL8 May 2019
Along the series, the scriptwriters try to convince us that Lagnar Lothbrook is a Viking ahead of his time. Violent, like all his peers, but fair. And then, breaking an honor pact, the hero carries out one of the most repulsive scenes of torture presented in recent years. Should we, after that, continue to hope for Ragnar's fate, yet presented by the authors as a somewhat exemplary figure? Of course, yes, the authors seem to say. Far from revealing the customs of the Middle Ages, or the complexity of the protagonist, what this chapter shows is an undisguised lack of character from the producers and maybe of those who enjoyed it as valid entertainment.
