Quite engaging, but lacks the necessary charm
OJT29 October 2015
The three episode Swedish miniseries "Viva Hate" is about a debuting punk rock band consisting of teenagers which have stolen their instruments at a music shop heist and decides to participate in a local band competition. the main person is Daniel, an avid Morrissey admirer, who needs to start the band Viva Hate to get recognition from the world, but mainly from his mum who only cares for his older brother Tommy.

It all goes on in the late seventies Sweden, and is quite good, and well made. The trouble is the shortcuts made, to make the story fast paced. I think this ruins the reality feel of the series. Well known young actor Tom Ljungman does a great job as the lead, and carries the series on his back, while many others are convoluted in their appearances, though except Lena Endre, as Daniels mother. She is great as always. I really hate the half seriousness by many of the characters, which seem very caricatured, and not real.

The series gives a good 70'ies feel, and this is maybe the series biggest asset. Not bad, this, but I'd love to get to feel more of the band's dynamics, instead of letting most of the series rely on Daniel and his family.
