This is an excellent short film, both in the imagery, the story and the message delivered. Eastern Europeans are fearless when talking about matters that are relevant to our world. I always enjoy their willingness to see and accept the odd, the bad and the ugly in our society, not just the good, the cute and funny.
The film has a very stylish design. It is a mix of traditional illustration and collage, very minimalist, with soft hues and occasional splashes of bold colors. It looks like a children's illustration book. There is some live action footage mixed with the animation, which gives this soft-looking animated film a bit of an edge.
However, this film is not about the looks, it is telling a modern fable with a message. There is a story inside a story, a la Magritte, but what the man painting is painting is not an apple, more an x-rayed society.
The popular saying states "the truth will set you free". The message in this short film could be summarized as, "sweety, when the truth is set free you might be horrified." The story takes a look at the ideals of a man who believes in society, the goodness of us all, about cherishing certain fundamental human values, and the reality or truth of what he finds in the world he lives in - a slap on the face. I love the scene of the old lady and the cat, I think it conveys the message beautifully in all its harshness. Some people, most people I would say, want to look at the world with soft eyes, want to see the best in other people, but the truth, the reality of what you find in modern society, is not always rosy or good at all.
This is a thought-provoking beautifully made short film that deserves more accolades and highest ratings.
Although spoken in Polish, the film is available with English subtitles all over the Internet.
