In February 2023, Netflix will remove a bunch of movie and TV series from its library,
Netflix UK and Netflix US takes down numerous titles each month without fanfare, meaning that many things on your watchlist could suddenly disappear.
These removals are due to licencing deals coming to an end. Often, the titles make their way back to Netflix in the following year, but sometimes they leave to go to other platforms.
This month sees a selection of Netflix Originals being taken down, also.
To minimise surprise, we have put together a comprehensive list of everything being removed in both Netflix UK and US.

Editor’s note: Former IndieWire staffer and Shadow and Act founder Tambay Obenson is launching Akoroko, a new platform devoted to African film and television; we’re happy to give him our platform to make his case.
For a century, “cinema” has been most often used in reference to an industry that almost entirely excludes the African experience. I want to change that with Akoroko, a new platform that will bridge African film and television industries with the West with consistent, robust, and candid coverage that’s local yet globally accessible. It will include criticism, analysis, consultation, cataloging, curated film streaming, and education.
An October 2021 Unesco report noted that the African film industry generates 5 billion in annual revenue, with the potential for 20 billion. Global appetite for African film and television programming is unknown because the industry continues to be “structurally underfunded, underdeveloped, and undervalued.”

From the moment this pandemic began, it’s been difficult to totally gauge its toll. It would be easy to say the daily ups and downs have played out like a film, but at least you can often see the end of a film coming before it arrives. It’s the way they follow easy, familiar tracks that makes them so inviting, so comforting.

A sweeping and melancholic first trailer has arrived for Neon’s secret omnibus film project, “The Year of the Everlasting Storm.” Featuring seven stories from seven auteurs from around the world, the film chronicles an unprecedented moment in time, and is a true love letter to the power of cinema and its storytellers. The seven-segment film is set to debut at the Cannes Film Festival this year (re-opening its doors for an in-person event after last year’s cancelled one), alongside two other Neon titles, “Memoria,” directed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul (who has a segment in “Everlasting Storm”) and “Titane,” directed by Julia Ducournau.
“The Year of the Everlasting Storm” has been slotted as Special Screening at the Cannes Film Festival this year. (The full lineup for the French festival was just announced on Thursday.) Now that coronavirus cases are spiking thanks to states who thought it necessary to prematurely relax their social distancing guidelines, don’t look surprised if the entirety of America finds itself under a second lockdown pretty soon. If that happens, our faith in humanity may be lost indefinitely, but at least we’ve got Netflix to help us drown our sorrows in a sea of content. And, to that end, here are some of the best originals currently available on the platform that you may want to watch this month.
Let’s start with some topical entries first. In light of the recent civil rights protests following the death of George Floyd and other African American victims of police brutality and systematic racism, the streamer got busy acquiring a ton of content by, for and/or about minority cultures in order to foster better understanding in this highly diverse nation.

It’s impossible to watch John Boyega’s impassioned speech at a Black Lives Matter rally in London last week, in support of widespread protests over the killing of George Floyd, and not be moved. “Black lives have always mattered,” Boyega said. “We have always been important. We have always meant something. We have always succeeded regardless. And now is the time.”
Six years prior, before “Star Wars” made him a global star, Boyega made a similar plea with “Imperial Dreams,” a nuanced portrait of poor black people in the America, and a critique of a system that stifles the chances of young black men with troubled pasts.

One of the appalling — and appealing — traits of malevolent presences onscreen is that they can be so darn imprecise in their revenge. Often victims of unfairness, ghosts and assorted other supernatural baddies may exact a semi-rational but flawed retribution. (Got bullied? Easy: Kill all the randy teens.) So it’s right to wonder what’s up with the cop killer in “Body Cam,” starring Mary J. Blige, with fine backup from Nat Wolff.
After all, the targets of the ravenous violence appear to be cops of color — not that the police department takes note of the pattern. But for viewers, it should be striking. What can that fact possibly portend? What’s the contemporary moral here? These questions dog “Body Cam,” making it intriguing, though not exactly visionary; it’s more twisted puzzle than horror ride. Not that there aren’t jumpy moments, and tense interludes.

Ghost Protocol: Vitthal Gets Supernatural with Hot Topic Horror
Genre has always been a formidable platform to explore significant social ills in creative ways, often sidestepping the heavy-handedness of tragedy or melodrama. Such is the aim of director Malik Vitthal’s sophomore film, Body Cam a horror thriller headlined by the Queen of Hip Hop Soul, Mary J. Blige. Six years after his 2014 debut Imperial Dreams, Vitthal teams with scribes Richmond Riedel and Nicholas McCarthy, the latter a director of a number of similar supernatural indie films (The Pact; At the Devil’s Door) for a jam-packed portrait of retribution which plays with so many tangents and elements the film often feels as if it bit off more than it could chew.…...

Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
A Bigger Splash (Luca Guadagnino)
Despite a loose script that justifies little, Italian director Luca Guadagnino’s follow-up feature to his glorious melodrama I Am Love is a sweaty, kinetic, dangerously unpredictable ride of a film. One is frustrated by the final stroke of genius that never came, but boy was it fun to spend two hours inside such a whirlwind of desires, mind games, delirious sights and sounds.

"When you're born in prison, you don't know what to do with the freedom." Netflix has debuted a trailer for the indie drama Imperial Dreams, starring John Boyega, better known as Finn from Star Wars. Before he went on to make The Force Awakens, Boyega made this indie film with Los Angeles director Malik Vitthal, starring as an aspiring and gifted writer who returns home to his neighborhood after being in prison for two years. He dreams of a better life for himself and his 4-year-old son in this hopeful depiction of inner-city life. This premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, three years ago, and is just now getting released thanks to Netflix. This looks pretty damn good, might be worth checking out even a few years late. Here's the official Us trailer for Malik Vitthal's Imperial Dreams, direct from Netflix's YouTube: A 21-year-old reformed gangster's devotion to his...

You loved him in Attack the Block and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and now you can finally see one of the movies John Boyega worked on between those two sci-fi favorites. Imperial Dreams is a drama that debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in 2014 and has been on the festival circuit without a distributor for a while. Now Netflix has picked it up as one of its branded Originals and is about to release it online. In the movie, which is the directorial debut of Malik Vitthal, Boyega plays an ex-con just out of prison who tries to make a better life for himself while taking care of his young son. The kid's mom is still in prison, and Boyega's character will do anything to keep him and do right, but it's hard in to keep out of trouble back...

John Boyega filmed his new Netflix movie Imperial Dreams long before his star-making turn as reluctant stormtrooper Finn in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. But though Malik Vitthal‘s gritty inner city drama won an Audience Award for its world premiere at Sundance in 2014, it’s taken the film a few years to make it onto screens. Now, Netflix has a trailer for the movie, which sees Boyega playing a single father and aspiring writer trying to keep himself and his son out of danger in Los Angeles’ infamous Imperial Courts housing projects.
Shot on location, Dreams looks to be a gut-punch of a film, as Boyega’s Bambi balances responsibilities, social pressures, and the crushing weight of poverty in an attempt to keep himself and his son alive and free. The film debuts on February 3 on Netflix.

In the three years since the Sundance Film Festival premiere of Imperial Dreams, life has greatly changed for John Boyega.
