Awesome Film
webstc23 April 2015
I saw this film at BAMCinemafest in Brooklyn, NY in 2014 and thought it was the best thing I'd seen there. In fact, it was one of my favorite films that I saw all year.

It's now April 2015 and it seems that the film isn't being distributed, which is a shame. For the right audience this film is a gem, and I'm sure eventually people will discover it. It's not an indie film with a quirky story, but rather an art film which happens to be American. If you're interested in long takes and/or films by Tsai Ming-Liang or Bela Tarr, then you should check this film out.

The film follows a post-collegiate white guy who seems to be caught in a certain malaise. He floats through life, lost and searching. He tries to find an answer in women, in clubs, in wallowing alone, in alcohol, and all the while some kind of carnal/animal inner self seems to ebb and flow. You have to sit with the film and be patient, and if you do you'll be rewarded. Many people might categorize it as a film where "nothing really happens," although actually that's not true. I don't think you should see the film for the story, but you should see it for how theme and story are explored. In terms of experimentation with formal elements, it's off the charts. There are some incredible shots, including a long take which was around 15 or 20 minutes. It isn't a long take in terms of duration, but rather in terms of camera placement.

Although it's a year after seeing the film, images from the film have left an imprint in my mind. I was very moved by watching it. It's rare to see such authenticity and exploration in an American independent film. Singer's voice is truly marvelous and I can't wait to see his next film.
