- Nurse: Well, you're all squared away.
- Muscat: Oh, good. I'm exhausted.
- Nurse: Think you'll manage not to kick the covers off five minutes after I'm gone?
- Muscat: Then I wouldn't get to listen to you complain.
- Nurse: It'll be somebody else's problem. I'm off duty. Try not to drive the next nurse crazy, will you?
- Muscat: You know I only like to drive you crazy.
- Bob Conti: Ah, Detective Wells. Bob Conti. I'm chief of staff here at the hospital.
- Carrie Wells: Yeah, this is...
- Bob Conti: And Joanne Webster, to what do we owe the honor?
- Joanne Webster: I'm sorry, do I know you?
- Bob Conti: I took your class at Fordham.
- Carrie Wells: Oh, Forensic Pathology.
- Joanne Webster: No, Knitting to Reduce Stress. It was a summer elective.
- Bob Conti: I still have those alpaca slippers I made. Softest darn things.
- Joanne Webster: Aren't they soft?
- Carrie Wells: So...
- Joanne Webster: It's like kitties on your feet.
- Carrie Wells: Why would Jackie risk coming back into the country to kill a high school science teacher?
- Al Burns: I wanted to kill my high school science teacher. He gave me a "D" in tenth grade. I had to go to summer school.
- Carrie Wells: Jay, what do we got on our victim?
- Jay Lee: Theodore Muscat. Lived in Mamaroneck. Been teaching at Lakeside High for the past three years. Before that, at a high school in Ohio for twelve years. Not married, no record, nothing unusual.
- Carrie Wells: There has got to be some connection here.
- Al Burns: Did you cross him with what we know of past Alpha Five operations?
- Jay Lee: [typing] There's nothing. Now, we know that Alpha Five was created by KGB officers to be an elite paramilitary group and that they secretly train in the Caucausus. So far, I see nothing that links Muscat to any past Alpha Five terrorist activity.
- Al Burns: Jackie kills anyone who gets in her way. Maybe Muscat's death was collateral damage on her way to something else.
- Carrie Wells: The question is, on her way to what?
- Carrie Wells: Back in his hospital room, Ted Muscat had a USB cap that was missing its flash drive. In his room, there was a poster of a valley below Mount El'brus. That is where the Alpha Five training camp is.
- Al Burns: An Alpha Five agent was working as a public schoolteacher in Mameroneck?
- Carrie Wells: I know, I know it sounds crazy, but maybe, just maybe, he's more than a science teacher.
- Jay Lee: Carrie was right. Ted Muscat, AKA Yevgeny Vayzer, Alpha Five through and through. Suspected in at least seven bombings throughout Europe from 1995 to 2009, including the Deutschland Bank attack, which killed 170 people. I'd hate to have detention in his class.
- Al Burns: The whole world must be looking for this guy.
- Jay Lee: They were, until he died three years ago. Vayzer was on a G4 that went down off the coast of Majorca in 2010. No survivors. Turns out, the three other passengers were all top Alpha Five operatives. All of them reported dead. Petra Kekilli, Sergei Kirsakov, and some guy I can only identify right now as Victor. I'm looking into all of them.
- Al Burns: 2010. That corresponds with the start of Muscat's teaching career in Mamaroneck.
- Cherie Rollins-Murray: I may have had some luck with our schoolteacher's phones. I traced four calls in two days from his school office to the Upper West Side townhouse of this guy: Jimmy Cerrano. Guy's a hedge fund manager worth a couple hundred million. Looks like the feds have been sniffing around him for a decade. Suspected money laundering for illegal arms deals.
- Al Burns: If Alpha Five is up to something, they'll need financing from someone who knows how to move money around quietly.
- Jay Lee: You know, the feds might already have an existing search warrant on Cerrano's place. I'll see if maybe we can go piggyback.
- Eliot Delson: How are things going?
- Carrie Wells: Oh, well, I'm just trying to connect the dots. Problem is, you have to actually be able to see the dots before you can connect them.
- Eliot Delson: But you think it's your girl?
- Carrie Wells: Well, we have her on the video outside the hospital. The guy she killed was Alpha Five. Yeah, I'm sure she's our girl.
- Eliot Delson: Any idea why she'd want to off a member of her team?
- Carrie Wells: Okay, you're doing that thing again.
- Eliot Delson: What, the ear-twitching thing?
- Carrie Wells: No. The "dancing around what you really want to say by asking obvious questions" thing.
- Eliot Delson: I do. I do want to say, Jackie is a deadly international assassin, and we should probably bring the feds in on this one.
- Carrie Wells: No. I know how she thinks; I can get inside her head.
- Eliot Delson: And she can get inside yours.
- Carrie Wells: Don't be so sure. It's like a maze up there.
- Eliot Delson: Carrie.
- Carrie Wells: Mm-hmm?
- Eliot Delson: If we stick with this, I need to know I'm not being dragged into some personal grudge match between the two of you.
- Carrie Wells: Never.
- Al Burns: Let me guess. He's worried your personal stake in catching Jackie is gonna compromise your professional judgment.
- Carrie Wells: Why does everyone keep using the word "personal" here? I am a cop. We catch bad guys. That is what we do. That is what I'm doing.
- Al Burns: I beat you at tennis a long time ago. You still can't let it go.
- Carrie Wells: August 2001. You said that ball was out when it was in. And what the hell does that have to do with anything?
- Al Burns: Jackie kills six people and then outsmarts you and disappears right under your nose. She won, you lost, it's personal.
- Carrie Wells: Listen, I said I was gonna take her Russian ass down, okay, when she-she got away from me the last time, and that is what I intend to do.
- Al Burns: You know, she got away from me, too, which is why we're gonna take her down together.
- Carrie Wells: Okay. I like the sound of that.
- Al Burns: [leaving] Ball was out.
- Carrie Wells: [to herself] It was in.
- Jackie M: You look good for a ghost.
- Petra Kekilli: You shouldn't have come, Jackie.
- Jackie M: Hmm. I'd rather do this the easy way, let you join those girls on the ladybug swing. Where is he, Petra?
- Petra Kekilli: You know I can't tell you.
- Jackie M: I'm sure you've heard about Yevgeny.
- Petra Kekilli: He was sick. And weak.
- [they fight, with Petra getting the upper hand]
- Petra Kekilli: I am not so weak.
- Al Burns: [finding Petra dead] She was their nanny for three years. She must've been using Cerrano's accounts for Alpha Five.
- Carrie Wells: Three years after she supposedly dies in a plane crash, just like Vayzer. We're dealing with a sleeper cell, Al. There were two more operatives on that plane. We have to find them.
- Jay Lee: I found these behind the dresser in the nanny's room.
- Carrie Wells: What are we looking at?
- Jay Lee: After September 11, we got special training to spot this kind of thing. It's a high-capacity semiconductor 70VR.
- Al Burns: Which means?
- Jay Lee: It's a type of electronic fuse. Really sophisticated. Our high school science teacher knew what he was doing.
- Al Burns: A fuse for what?
- Jay Lee: Well, this goes way above my pay grade, so I can't be sure, but I recognize some of the components. The nuetron reflectors give it away.
- Carrie Wells: A bomb. A nuclear bomb.
- Sergei Kirsakov: Why should he see you?
- Jackie M: I have something he wants.
- Sergei Kirsakov: And he has something you want. But I don't think he's going to give it to you.
- Jackie M: [pistol-whipping him] Tell me where Victor is, and I'll let you live. One-time offer. Between friends.
- Sergei Kirsakov: You make the same offer to our friends Petra and Yevgeny?
- Jackie M: They were stupid enough to fight back. But you, you're smarter than that.
- Carrie Wells: Last time I saw you, you were dead.
- Jackie M: Mm, briefly, yes.
- Carrie Wells: Yeah. Not long enough.
- Jackie M: Actually, I-I found oblivion... rather pleasant.
- Carrie Wells: Oh, well, I could make you dead again. I should after what you did.
- Jackie M: It was never personal.
- Carrie Wells: Oh, that's not true, Jackie. Sometimes it's very personal.
- Jackie M: I'm sorry you feel that way.
- Carrie Wells: I'm not talking about me. I'm talking about you. And Victor. You're not cleaning up for him, are you? You're trying to hurt him. I don't know what he did to you, but is it worth killing thousands of people?
- Jackie M: Depends what you imagine he did to me.
- Jackie M: You know, truth is, you interest me.
- Carrie Wells: Oh, yeah?
- Jackie M: You're a strong woman. But I worry about you.
- Carrie Wells: [amused laugh] You worry about me?
- Jackie M: This violent temperament.
- Carrie Wells: Ah.
- Jackie M: If I may be so bold, I imagine myself a bit of a chemist.
- Carrie Wells: Yes, I have seen your work.
- Jackie M: In order for the mind to work well, you need the right chemistry in your body.
- Carrie Wells: Oh.
- Jackie M: You? You need more greens in your life. Would help you master your emotions, see more clearly. A green smoothie. That's it. That's where you need to start.
- Agent Stone: [after letting Carrie talk to Jackie] Are you okay? What the hell was she going on about?
- Carrie Wells: I don't know, but if I spend one more minute in there with her, I can't be responsible for what I'm gonna do.
- Carrie Wells: Listen to me. I need to know what these mean.
- Jay Lee: Yeah, sure. Uh, could you give me a clue?
- Carrie Wells: Jackie gave them to me.
- Jay Lee: I was watching you guys the whole time. I didn't see her pass anything to you.
- Carrie Wells: She must have followed me this morning and left those numbers in a place I'd see, knowing I'd remember them if she needed me to.
- Jay Lee: Whoa, whoa, wait a minute. She left messages in your memory?
- Carrie Wells: It's a little more complicated than that, but essentially, yes.
- Jay Lee: Oh. Okay, okay. But why is she telling you? If this could help her, why wouldn't she want the ICA guys to know?
- Carrie Wells: Jay?
- Jay Lee: Yeah?
- Carrie Wells: If I needed two minutes alone with her - and I mean *alone* - could you get it for me? No-no cameras, no Tom and Jerry watching?
- Jay Lee: That depends. If I needed it, could you get me immunity from federal prosecution?
- Carrie Wells: Absolutely. We've got work to do.
- Jay Lee: So, these are Jackie's numbers. I've run cryptanalysis, block cypher, Shor's quantum factoring. All I got is a partial match on the birthdates of the Fearsome Foursome.
- Al Burns: L.A. Rams defensive front back in the '60s? Rosey Grier, Deacon Jones, Merlin...?
- Jay Lee: Merlin who?
- Al Burns: Olsen! I know who they are. What do they have to do with this?
- Jay Lee: That's the problem. Nothing.
- Al Burns: Well, that leaves us nowhere.
- Cherie Rollins-Murray: [approaching] Well, I wouldn't say nowhere. And I didn't even need an algorithm.
- Al Burns: What do you got?
- Cherie Rollins-Murray: When I first moved to Manhattan, I got a post office box at the James A. Farley Post Office, the big one right near Penn Station. I knew there was something about those numbers.
- Al Burns: P.O. box.
- Cherie Rollins-Murray: Mm-hmm. The first number, I bet you that's the combination. The second one's the box number.
- Agent Thorne: Agent Stone's contacted some people about moving Jackie to a location where she can be interrogated vigorously.
- Al Burns: She's Alpha Five, Thorne. She's not gonna talk, whatever you do to her, and if she does, it's not gonna be the truth.
- Agent Thorne: I'll take my chances.
- Jackie M: [Carrie shows her a flash drive] Ah. Good work.
- Carrie Wells: What's on it?
- Jackie M: I couldn't break the encryption. Whatever it is, Victor wants it, and I want Victor.
- Carrie Wells: Why are you telling me this? Why not the ICA guys?
- Jackie M: They've been compromised.
- Carrie Wells: Thorne and Stone?
- Jackie M: I'm not sure who exactly, but someone in the ICA is working with Victor. They killed Sergei, not me. There's a code word: CALAMUS. Use it, and you'll find out everything you need to know.
- Carrie Wells: Why are you telling me?
- Jackie M: In my business, knowing whom to trust is a matter of life and death. I trust you. Victor buys people with money, with love, with fear. But you... you can't be bought. Am I wrong?
- Carrie Wells: No. You, however, do have a price, and it wasn't hard to find out what it is. David, your son with Victor. Am I wrong?
- Jackie M: Victor was never a father to David. But he's a jealous man. I wanted to leave him and leave Alpha Five, so he took my son from me. I thought he died with his father on that plane, but he didn't. And I want him back.
- Carrie Wells: And you were gonna trade this for your son?
- Jackie M: Victor needs it for his plan, and my son needs to live a free life. A normal boy, not like one of us.
- Carrie Wells: How could your son ever hope to be normal, knowing you paid for his freedom with the lives of innocent people?
- Carrie Wells: Jackie, I have the stick. I have you. Why should I help you?
- Jackie M: Because you don't know Victor. He'll never give up, even if you have that. He'll find another one, or make another. Yes, I need your help. But you still need mine.
- Jay Lee: So, what'd she say while the cameras were...
- Al Burns: Overloaded? Yeah, I overheard.
- Jay Lee: That was the best I could come up with. That Thorne guy scares me.
- Carrie Wells: With good reason. According to Jackie, Thorne and Stone might be working with Victor.
- Al Burns: What?
- Carrie Wells: Yeah. We got to find out if she's right, and we've got to find out now.
- Jay Lee: Hold on. We can't just go poking around the ICA. Those guys are real super-spooks.
- Carrie Wells: She gave me a code word: CALAMUS. Find me something, Jay. Anything.
- Jay Lee: Okay, so back when we took out bin Laden, turns out there was a ton of stuff on hard drives in that compound that showed evidence of a joint operation between the U.S. government and al-Qaeda. Now, that operation was called Calamus, and was supposedly the brainchild of a rogue group of agents working for the ICA.
- Al Burns: Okay, but ICA is a big agency.
- Jay Lee: Right, so then I checked with a buddy of mine in Washington about our pals Thorne and Stone. Turns out, they weren't assigned to come down here and help us like they said. They insisted on it.
- Al Burns: So Jackie's right. They're working with Victor and Alpha Five.
- Al Burns: Americans planning an attack on their own people. But why?
- Jay Lee: There were some references to Iran on the Calamus reports. My guess is... they're trying to make it look like Iran's behind this.
- Al Burns: Which would get us into a war with Iran, tear apart the Middle East, who knows what else. What's on the stick?
- Jay Lee: Thought you'd never ask.
- [opening his laptop]
- Jay Lee: Okay. Now, these look like regular seventh grade homework assignments. Most of them freakin' terrible. But like the commercial says, there's more. Cryptography didn't work with Jackie's clues. But here's why they need the stick. The enabling code for the bomb. With it, they can arm the bomb. Without it, they'll never be able to detonate it.
- Al Burns: That's the price for Jackie's son. A dead city and world war. Can you reprogram it?
- Jay Lee: Yeah. To do what?
- Al Burns: Kill the bomb, permanently.
- [Jay nods uncertainly]
- Al Burns: Okay, new plan.
- Jay Lee: What do you got in mind?
- Al Burns: If we get caught, we all go to prison for the rest of our lives.
- [dialing his phone]
- Al Burns: Carrie...
- Agent Thorne: We're here to pick up the prisoner.
- Eliot Delson: Good morning to you, too, gentlemen.
- Agent Stone: We're in a rush.
- Agent Thorne: Authorize the transfer.
- Eliot Delson: Not much for small talk, are you?
- Eliot Delson: [after Stone and Thorne leave his office] You know, I'm just gonna say it; the chemistry's not there.
- Jay Lee: Wait a minute, how much do you know?
- Eliot Delson: Your asses aren't the only ones on the line here.
- Jay Lee: So you're in on it?
- Eliot Delson: I talked to Carrie and Al, so, yeah, I'm in on it. And if this goes bad, I plan to deny that.
- Jay Lee: Boss, if this thing goes bad, I'm not sure who you'll be denying it to.
- Agent Stone: I don't like killing innocent Americans. But what we're doing today is an act of patriotism. Ultimately, we're saving lives. This is our Boston Tea Party.
- Carrie Wells: You made the right choice.
- Jackie M: I know I have no right to ask anything of you, but... he shouldn't have to pay.
- Carrie Wells: Well, I'll make sure to find him a home where he can live a normal life and be happy. Trust me.
- Jackie M: I do.
