HIV POZ older gay men migrate to Palm Springs
ohlabtechguy28 February 2021
I lived in this area briefly in 2013. All the gay men were transplants and it didn't take long to figure out what their general profiles looked like. This movie captures much of that. Because so many of the gay men's profiles look very similar, there isn't much demographic, social and cultural diversity in PS. As the one featured male stated.....he found no "culture" in the desert. In this movie, it seems as if Palm Springs serves as more than just a retirement community for like minded people, but also a peaceful place to die. Palm Springs is certainly a beautiful place to die, but the movie didn't show all the abundant, verdant landscaping and lawns. I never found any unkempt yards, litter or slums. And the ever present, rugged, sterile mountains do convey a primordial beauty all their own. It's too bad that natural beauty, art and a host of other possible interests isn't enough for some people to escape their dire loneliness and depression. In the end, we are all in the same sinking ship. Although some people's ride to the bottom may be rockier than others, the destination, old age and death, are the same.
