Very Enjoyable

Quite entertaining. Plot lines are very well developed and once again the writing ,acting and direction are all superb. The only reason I did not rate It a ten was due to the repeated Louisa supermom routine- for heavens sake If you want to have more quality time with James Henry then you have to cut back on work and why do they keep trying to make Martin someone he is clearly not-wears a bit then-otherwise top-flight episode.

Once again, you are introduced to someone even more unpleasant than Martin!

Every few episodes, "Doc Martin" introduces a character that somehow manages to be more unpleasant and nasty than he is. In this case, Ruth has moved and her new place is a mess. Her landlord is a nasty old git who mostly refuses to see her or take care of her home. Instead, he's content to be a crank who hoards things and avoids people. Not surprisingly, he's got a medical issue that becomes more obvious through the course of the show.

Additional plots are Jennifer and her STUPID problem with her eye as well as a baby with a cataract. As for why Jennifer's problem is stupid, see the show and you'll know what I mean.

Overall, this is a relatively weak episode. None of the plots are particularly engaging and the show is worth seeing if you are fan-- otherwise it's an easy one to skip.

More Caricatures

One of the things the writers do in this series is to throw Martin into all kinds of uncomfortable situations. Due to circumstances, he must take William to a library play session. They sing the usual songs and he meets the mother, whom he thinks quite idiotic. They are equally uncomfortable with him and make him aware. Of course, he is a germophobe so any contact with others is beyond his grasp. We also are introduced to his aunt's new living situation and her sad, but feisty, neighbor. Our long arm of the law is again totally inept. I'm afraid, he is such a comic character that he gets tiresome.

Subtly insightful, delightfully witty, and superb acting.

Warning: Spoilers
I see that many of the reviewers here tell you about the episodes in terms of events and facts. It's sad that there is a curious lack of ability to read the subtext in a plot - - especially this one. The running theme of insecurity, loneliness, and isolation for varying reasons is crystallized not only in Doc Martin's experiences in this episode, but also, those of the a old man whose home neighbors, Dr. Ruth's new place in the town. Throughout, this theme is supported by the pharmacist, whose desire to look younger causes her to do something foolish; by Burt, long-widowed, who shows her compassion, and perhaps is even attracted to her; by Al, who is displaying signs of loneliness, and decides he would like to meet someone (missing, of course, the sweetest girl, in whose home he's presently living). PC Penhale is useful as always, in providing the touch of humor needed to keep the plot light. There is also a scene with two elderly women in Doc's office, whose pathos in dealing with old age and loneliness also links in with the gently witty subplot. All culminates in a poignant scene in which Doc finds himself overcome with situations he's expected to respond to, as he's never had to in his life- yes, even as all the characters must deal with that same feeling to some extent in their lives, in different ways, And even Louisa, who expected a minimum amount of companionship in marriage, is alone in her own way, because she is forced to be Martin's therapist as much as she is his wife, having to instruct him on how to be generous, and tolerant with their child. This was a masterful plot, and the writer deserves anyone's kudos. I have placed him on my list of favorite writers, and hope to see more of his work elsewhere.
