Although some may find the new mystery Wicked Little Letters a bit lax in actual mystery, an incredibly strong cast, led by Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley manages to elevate the film to a wickedly clever piece that makes up for its shortcomings with unabashed enthusiasm and excitement.
Based on an allegedly true story, Wicked Little Letters tells the tale of two women: Edith Swan (Colman) and Rose Gooding (Buckley) who, after Rose is accused of sending Edith and several of the town’s residents several profane letters, set about investigating the crime themselves to prove that Rose is innocent.
Director Thea Sharrock – whose previous feature work includes The One and Only Ivan (2020) and Me Before You (2016) – works from a script that was penned by Jonny Sweet, an actor who has also written scripts for several episodes of the television programs Gap Year (2017), Together (2015), and Chickens (2011). There’s a reason “Wicked Little Letters” lured the A-list cast that British comedian and TV scribe Jonny Sweet (“Chickens”) and theater/film director Thea Sharrock (“The Hollow Crown”) dreamed about, including Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley.
Sweet pitched the idea to StudioCanal’s Nicola Shindler, who took him on as a film writer even though he’d only done TV. His first movie script was so funny that when Shindler sent it to Colman, the Oscar-winner (“The Favourite”) signed on right away to play Edith, a proper village spinster living at home who goes to the police after receiving a series of scatologically creative hate letters in the post. Who could resist language like “you foxy-ass piss-country whore?”
That got the ball rolling: Soon, Timothy Spall joined the cast as Edith’s misogynistic father, steeped in old-school patriarchal ways, along with Jessie Buckley as Rose, Edith’s brash, Irish,...

“People have their own definition of what toxic is,” Future told veteran journalist Elliott Wilson in a widely circulated GQ cover story that boldly proclaimed the 38-year-old Atlanta artist as “The Best Rapper Alive.” “[These women] all were toxic to me. They just don’t want to admit it.” That latter quote – a response to controversy over his troubling behavior towards his ex-lovers – enthralled the Future Hive, which gleefully anticipated the cascade of “toxic masculinity” that his new album, I Never Liked You, would bring. The campaign looked like a self-own for...

“The Masked Singer” is now a two-time Emmy winner for its wild, wacky and breathtaking costumes. (We can already hear Piglet oinking in delight.) The costume design team, led by Marina Toybina (watch our recent interview), claimed its first trophy last year at the 2020 Creative Arts ceremony, but now this category has been changed to a juried award, so it gets voted on weeks before all of the other races. Fox’s “The Masked Singer” shares its second prize in the Variety/Nonfiction/Reality Costumes category with two other programs — Disney+’s “Black Is King” and IFC’s “Sherman’s Showcase Black History Month Spectacular” — since juries can choose to award all of the nominees, some of the nominees or none of the nominees. Scroll down for the complete list of 2021 juried winners.

Jonny Sweet's new sitcom Together debuts tonight - and the comedian has claimed the show might never have been made without BBC Three.
Sweet has created, written and stars in the romantic comedy series - his first solo television effort - and told Digital Spy that BBC Three is vital for giving fresh talent a shot.
"I think everyone knows how difficult it is to get a show on BBC One or BBC Two, because there are so many great established comedians, and comedy writers and comedy actors," he said.
"BBC One is such a specific beast where you have to cater to such a specific - and also large - demographic and I think it'd be such a shame if BBC Three weren't there and weren't supporting new people like me.

For the 90 minutes that Danny Boyle's comedy-drama pilot was on I laughed – and despaired too
• Babylon trailer
• First look: Babylon
As a TV genre, the comedy-drama – com-dram, or dramedy, if you're in too much of a rush for all five syllables – has a lot of ground to cover. It needs to be amusing and it needs to have heart; its intentions collapse if you neither laugh nor feel. On the surface Babylon (Sunday, Channel 4) is a successful example of what a comedy-drama should be. It ticks off its primary requirements with astounding certainty. For 90 minutes, I laughed and I despaired.
The concept is tricky to pin down, because it aims to do so much. It's a cop show, but its cops are also participating in the making of a cop show. It's a political satire, but it is warm towards its main targets while still managing to criticise the system that contains them.

What happens when the makers of Trainspotting and Four Lions train their sights on the Met for a Channel 4 comedy drama?
Danny Boyle is up a ladder, looking down on the chaos he's created. Dust settles on what's left of a terrace house's bathroom, its plastic peach suite covered in powdered masonry and plaster from the recently demolished toilet wall. A gunman has just burst through it head-first, leaving a beige fog behind him as he runs away. Boyle's hair has little bits of plaster in it as he peers into the monitor, satisfied. "Ok, got it," he says quietly and the crew start clearing up.
We are not in a terrace house but a curtained-off area in the middle of an open-plan 70s office block next to the Tower of London. Boyle, along with Peep Show writers Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong, is tackling the damaged relationship between the police,...

The Britain's Got Talent judge says she was attacked by an unnamed comic, 21st-century comics grapple with homosexuality, and David Brent realises his rock-god dreams
Not much to laugh about in today's top story, as Amanda Holden writes in her autobiography that she was once assaulted by "a famous comedian". The Britain's Got Talent judge claims she was cornered by the unnamed comic at a public event, during a period when she was patching up her marriage to Les Dennis after an affair with Men Behaving Badly star Neil Morrissey. "[Dennis and I] went to an event together," Holden writes, "and on my way back from the loo, I was cornered by a famous comedian, who tried to kiss me and put his hands in places they shouldn't have been. Jake checks out the first two episodes of Sky One's Chickens, a promising new sitcom from the stars of The Inbetweeners...
Sky's Chickens is the first self-written project for The Inbetweeners stars Simon Bird and Joe Thomas along rising talent Johnny Sweet. Originally piloted on Channel 4, Chickens is the tale of three young men roundly despised by their local village of womenfolk for not joining in the first World War.
At first glance, it's tempting to make comparisons with Blackadder Goes Forth being as it's set in the same era. But Chickens avoids this by focusing on small town pettiness back home rather than the hardship of the trenches. The first episode establishes the setting and tone well, you first see our heroes cottage daubed in cheerfully abusive graffiti.
