Containment
After Mr Bates vs The Post Office. ITV hoped that they would have another drama that would prick the social conscience of the British public.
This one is based on the experiences of Dr Rachel Clarke. Who wrote down her experiences of working on a Covid 19 ward from March 2020 onwards.
According to Dr Clarke the notes were intended to be a kind of therapy. After the news broke of government adviser Dominic Cummings' trip to Barnard Castle. Rumours that the Prime Minister Boris Johnson might have been breaking Covid lockdown rules. The notes morphed into a book.
The screenplay has been co-written with top television writer Jed Mercurio, himself a doctor.
The first episode is set some days lockdown. It is told from the viewpoint of Dr Abbey Henderson (Joanne Froggatt) as the first wave of patients arrive at hospital. They do not fall in line with government guidance to hospitals. These people had not been abroad so they were not eligible to be tested for Covid.
The hospital staff did not have appropriate PPE equipment, what was available was designed for men. Some staff made their own makeshift protective equipment from bin bags.
Intercut with the drama is the real life news footage of actual events of the Covid pandemic hitting Britain. Looking back, it is obvious the Tory government were blase about what was to hit. Totally unprepared about the impact of the Covid pandemic. They really did not want to give free money out when people had to be furloughed.
The problem for me with the first episode. It was pulling its punches. It needed to be hard hitting. Maybe it is still too soon for candid hard hitting pandemic dramas to be made. Like the Vietnam war, the good movies turned up many years after the war ended.
Here it might be after the Tories have left government. That the real story could be told of the impact of Covid and how a lot of it could had been avoided with better government action. Instead we had a government laughing at us for keeping within the rules while they partied.
