- One week earlier, the ten contestants gathered together at a hotel in Sydney in order to watch the eighth episode as it went to air on TV. This was the first time they had all seen each other since the game had finished over two months earlier, and only the final three contestants, revealed to the eliminated contestants as Abby, Alan and Jane, knew the game's outcome. Before the episode went to air, the seven eliminated contestants were polled on who they thought was the winner, who was the loser and who was the Mole. Jan proved to be a popular choice for the Mole among many of the eliminated contestants, with Rocky being the only one to choose Alan as the Mole during the poll. Many of the contestants were surprised when it was Jan who emerged as the winner of the game and the A$115,000 in the prize kitty.
During the course of the show, each contestant used a video diary to express their thoughts on the other contestants and how the group performed in the challenges, however, Alan led a double life in his video diaries by recording one from the perspective of him as a contestant, and then a second diary from the perspective of him as the Mole.
Jan revealed the secrets of her success in the game. She began to suspect that Alan was the Mole in the second episode, when during the Humour Test challenge, he instructed her to record with a wide shot, which would have made it very difficult to catch the sight of laughter. From that moment, Jan did her best to not let Alan out of her sight and made sure she knew all of his movements. She also devised a strategy where if another contestant asked her if she was the Mole, rather than answering "No", she gave only a vague answer that would leave the other contestant unable to dismiss the possibility that she was. This strategy paid off when of the seven contestants to be eliminated from the game, five of them - James, Rocky, Josephine, Ben and Linda - selected Jan as the Mole in the quizzes that led to their elimination, as did Abby in the final quiz in the cells at Port Arthur.
The episode also revealed the clues that would have allowed a viewer who spotted them to know that it was Alan who was the Mole. In the first episode, James was shown making a confession in his video diary that Alan was a prime suspect to be the Mole, but that he developed a fondness for Alan that led him to go against his gut instinct. This fondness would prove to be James' downfall as he became the first contestant to be eliminated from the game, meaning that he never knew that his initial suspicions had been right, not even when he was polled before the final episode went to air. In the Hostage Rescue challenge, Alan jammed the signal on communications that came into the helicopter, and searched on purpose for the key that could unlock Patrick in places where he knew that it wouldn't be.
In the Humour Test, Alan's camera footage caught very little human laughter, but it did record the other contestants' cheating. He later instructed Jan to record with a wide shot, which would have made it very difficult to catch the sight of laughter, and was also able to erase some of the footage that was successfully recorded without anybody knowing. In the Golf challenge, Alan deliberately answered the question he was given incorrectly, with the subsequent reduction in the number of strokes available to Josephine being enough to make a difference to the result. In the Imposters challenge, although Alan was the only person on his team that had any previous experience of wine tasting, Jan was the only person who contributed to their team choosing the right wine.
In the Fishing Trip challenge, Alan had a huge fish within his grasp while he was spearfishing, but he let it go. Later, he was the only person that went out to re-check the cray pots, and his motorboat mysteriously ran out of fuel on his return. In the Raft Escape, Alan tipped the raft over moments after Bev fell in soon after the raft had left the island's shore.
In the Brain Teasers challenge, Alan did very little to help Bev and Jan solve the puzzles, except that he calculated the answer when he knew that they were going to succeed in order to make him look like he was the hero. He was left off less suspicious when Abby, Ben and Linda failed to solve all of the puzzles in the remaining time. During the Wildlife Photography challenge, Alan and Bev came to an initial agreement in their vehicle about which four photos they would submit, but when they met Grant and the wildlife expert, Alan subtly convinced Bev to choose a different photo.
In the Dam Flags challenge, Alan was the only person who had any previous experience of abseiling, but he deliberately missed the harder blue flag and went to the easier red flag, since he presumed, correctly, that it was unlikely that either Abby or Bev would be able to get the harder flags. He also spun Bev around as much as possible after she released the rope that would swing her toward the flag, which disoriented her and left her physically drained and unable to reach the flag.
Alan was a fan of the Australian Football League and lived close to Essendon, so if he was playing to win the Celebrity Photography challenge, he would have instantly identified James Hird as the person Abby had photographed. As it was, Linda's identification of the player stopped this sabotage from costing the group money from the kitty. In the Treasure Hunt, Alan only sought one of the six treasures, and his breach of the road rules by U-turning across a median strip, which led to the money being forfeited, was deliberate.
The episode ends with the final three contestants having dinner with Grant after the screening of the previous episode. Grant's final piece of business is to present Jan with a cheque for A$115,000. He hands the cheque to Alan, who makes a show of trying to put it into his pocket before he passes it on to Jan.
