Exclusive: Nacelle, the studio behind Down to Earth with Zac Efron and Grant, Kevin Hart’s Guide to Black History, has struck a deal to distribute a feature-length doc filmed during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The company has taken worldwide rights to Comedy of War: Laughter in Ukraine.
The doc comes from filmmakers Christopher Walters and Krista Liney, who runs producer Maiden, and shows the brutal reality of the conflict through the lens of stand-up comedians touring in war-torn Ukraine. Nacelle plans to take the doc to film festivals before launching worldwide sales.
The documentary follows four rising stars of Ukrainian stand-up comedy, each with a unique perspective on the war currently being waged in their homeland. Performing in converted bomb shelters, they laugh in spite of the war, not at it.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine began almost a year ago and has left tens of thousands dead and millions displaced.

Idris Elba! Kim Kardashian! Ariana Grande! Greta Thunberg! Rihanna! Adele! The cast list of ITV’s new comedy is impeccable. It would be right up there with Glengarry Glen Ross or Pulp Fiction if it weren’t for one snag: those famous faces appear only via deep fake technology, which super-imposes their beloved features onto the profiles of actors (who are doing middling vocal impressions of them). This is the world of Deep Fake Neighbour Wars, a show that mixes comedy and technology with as much success as Dave Chapelle welcoming Elon Musk as his warm-up act.
It’s essentially a mockumentary version of naff reality TV, like Nasty Neighbours and Fear Thy Neighbor. Petty domestic disputes that escalate into violence. The twist here is that the participants have the faces (and names) of well-known celebrities. They don’t, however, have the careers of those celebrities, and they only possess...

Judges Gabrielle Union and Julianne Hough are vacating their chairs on NBC’s unscripted series “America’s Got Talent,” Variety can report exclusively.
Union, an NAACP Image award winner and prolific film and TV presence, joined the panel this year with Hough. An NBC spokesperson confirmed that the pair will not return for the 2020 season. Representatives for Union and Hough did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Union and Hough had replaced longtime judges Melanie Brown (Spice Girls) and model-host Heidi Klum for the show’s 14th season.
Executive producer and judge Simon Cowell, comedian Howie Mandel and host Terry Crews are all expected to come back to the series, said one insider familiar with the production. Judges are often cycled out and return later, added the individual, and the show often features guest judges.

FX has announced a new series, Snowfall, ordered to series, and it sounds at first glance like something right in the network’s wheelhouse.
Snowfall — Pictured: Damson Idris as Franklin Saint. Cr: Michael Yarish/FX. Copyright 2016, FX Networks. All rights reserved.
A show that focuses on the infancy of the cocaine epidemic in Los Angeles during the early ’80s is probably enough to raise interest, but this telling mixes in some very interesting characters as our entry into this world. From a young street entrepreneur looking for power (Damson Idris), to a Mexican wrestler who finds himself at odds with a crime family (Sergio Peris-Mencheta), to a CIA operative with a lot of problems bearing down on him (Carter Hudson), this isn’t going to be your normal take on looking at a new drug problem.
The show is executive produced by an eclectic group with some big wins behind them (Justified,...

Axel Foley is headed back to Detroit, it seems. Deadline is reporting today that Beverly Hills Cop 4 is officially back on again at Paramount, after electing new directors in Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah.
It’s certainly the most promising news to emerge from the action-comedy sequel in some time, particularly after it was delayed indefinitely at the studio last year. Now, Paramount has pumped fresh blood into the dormant Beverly Hills Cop series, entrusting relative newcomers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah with the keys to the cult franchise.
And we do mean newcomers. As Deadline notes, the Belgian writer-directors broke onto the scene with Image and later edgy thriller Black, the latter of which bagged El Arbi and Fallah the Discovery Award at last year’s Toronto Film Festival.
It was enough to pique the attention of both Eddie Murphy and longtime producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who reportedly showered praise on Black when it premiered late last year. Despite some early apprehension, Murphy is on board to reprise his role as the gun-toting, irreverent Axel Foley, and by plucking El Arbi and Fallah, the actor has ensured the up-and-coming Belgian filmmakers are headed straight into big-budget production with Beverly Hills Cop 4. But will it prove to be a gamble that pays off?
So, there you have it: Beverly Hills Cop 4 has recruited new Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah to pump a healthy dose of “youthful energy” into its dormant actioner. There’s currently no mention of when the sequel will step before the cameras, but we’ll let you know when we hear more.

French sales agent heads to Belgium to set up new company. First slate includes Belgian Hans Herbots’ crime thriller The Treatment.
Long-time Films Distribution sales agent Pamela Leu has launched her own Brussels-based sales company, Be for Films.
Leu left Nicolas Brigaud-Robert and François Yon’s Paris-based Films Distribution on amicable terms last month.
The company will provide some initial back office support while Leu rolls out her first independent slate at Cannes.
“After 11 years of collaboration with Films Distribution, running a company and creating Be for Films was the obvious step to achieve my own dreams and desires for doing business in the film industry,” Leu told ScreenDaily.
Be for Films is the only fully-fledged sales company based within Belgian borders, although state-backed organisations like Wallonie Bruxelles Image and Flanders Image do a lot of promotional work for local productions.
