A.A. Milne’s 1926 children’s book Winnie-the-Pooh and the characters in it lapsed into the public domain at the start of last year, paving the way for the Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey horror franchise, which in turn kicked off the Twisted Childhood Universe, consisting of other horror movies inspired by children’s stories, like Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare, Bambi: The Reckoning, and Pinocchio Unstrung, building up to the crossover movie Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble. On January 1st, the earliest versions of Mickey Mouse – seen in the animated shorts Plane Crazy, The Gallopin’ Gaucho, and most famously Steamboat Willie – became public domain, so Mickey-based horror movies also started springing up. Within the first three days of the year, we saw the short film The Vanishing of S.S. On January 1st, the earliest versions of Mickey Mouse – seen in the animated shorts Plane Crazy, The Gallopin’ Gaucho, and most famously Steamboat Willie – became public domain… which, of course, means we’re now going to get multiple horror movies that feature characters inspired by Mickey Mouse. Within the first three days of the year, we saw the short film The Vanishing of S.S. Willie, a trailer for the slasher movie Mickey’s Mouse Trap, and an announcement that Terrifier 2 producers Steven Della Salla and Michael Leavy and director Steven Lamorte, who previously made the Grinch-inspired horror movie The Mean One, were teaming up for a Steamboat Willie-inspired horror flick. Now it has been confirmed that the movie is called Screamboat, and Iconic Events Releasing will be giving it a theatrical release sometime in 2025.
Screamboat is expected to start filming in the spring and will tell the story...

Ready for another horrorific take on a childhood favourite character? Watch the first Bambi: The Reckoning trailer here.
We recently reported that not only was Winnie The Pooh: Blood And Honey 3 in the works, but there was a larger cinematic universe, including a team-up movie, on the way. Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble will hit cinemas in 2025, but before that, we’ll get Bambi: The Reckoning.
That’s right, everyone’s favourite fawn, Bambi, is also getting the horror treatment and we now have our first look at the upcoming horror film.
Take a look at the Bambi: The Reckoning trailer below.
Granted, it’s only a 61-second teaser and only gives us a brief look at the film, but we do get a shot of the monstrous deer flipping a car over with its antlers. Say less, we’re in.
Here’s the short description that accompanies the film’s trailer...

There’s a pandemic going on right now. It involves filmmakers taking characters that have recently fallen under Public Domain and making a horror film with them. This isn’t an issue on its own, as adaptations of past work can make for some great films. But with movies like Mickey’s Mouse Trap, Steamboat Willie, Winnie the Pooh Blood and Honey, and even Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare, quality doesn’t seem to be on these filmmakers’ minds. No, the intention just seems to be to make a quick buck.
There was a YouTube trend many years ago where fan films would spring up that looked damn near movie quality. I still look back fondly upon stuff like Mortal Kombat Legacy or even serious Power Rangers. So, it’s not exactly a new concept. But what these new films are lacking is any kind of passion for the adapted material.

Over the past year, the earliest iterations of Mickey Mouse and Winnie the Pooh have entered the public domain, paving the way for horror projects riffing on the characters. With the copyrights for DC Comics’ biggest characters — Superman, Batman, Joker, and Wonder Woman — entering the public domain in 2034, 2035, 2036, and 2037, respectively, Variety has published a new report explaining how DC and Warner Bros. have begun preparing for the future.
At the most public level, co-head of DC Studios James Gunn has already mapped out a new DC Universe with an eye on spotlighting lesser-known characters. For example, the tentpole film Superman: Legacy will introduce a group of superhumans called The Authority. Along the same lines, a Batman movie titled The Brave and the Bold will star a new Batman actor while expanding members of “the Bat family.” This includes Batman’s biological son, Damian Wayne, as a version of Robin.
