- A father is fatally shot-wounded at a gas station, just after telling his kid son to duck inside the car, during what looks like a drive-by street gangs fight. The more the team looks into the Latino suspects, the least it fits a gang war, given more personal relationships. Jackson Raydor accepts, as a favor to his ex Sharon and being skinned, to act as extraordinary court-appointed defense counsel for the prime suspect, but does a far better job then she can stomach until he's tricked to be fired. Meanwhile Rusty desperately seeks help to avoid actually accepting or openly refusing his study buddy's parents home dinner invitation and detective Julio Sanchez is openly tired of D.D.A. Emma Rios singling him out as 'fellow' Latino.—KGF Vissers
- A father and son are at a gas station when a carload of gang members park near the pump. A black Tahoe drives by and starts shooting into the crowd. Several gang members and a middle-aged woman are shot and killed. After the car speeds away, the badly injured father instructs his son to call the police.
The Major Crimes team begins their investigation at the crime scene. Four people were fatally shot - two gang members known as Little Joe and Chopper and two bystanders.
In the murder room, security camera footage reveals the Tahoe's license plates. It was reported stolen by Browning Security Company. Sharon resists releasing the security footage to the public in order to avoid gang retaliation. Tao identifies one of the gang members who escaped the shooting as Javier "Speedy" Reyes, the brother of the killed driver. Speedy has a long criminal record but reportedly "found Jesus" while in prison and has turned over a new leaf. The team begin a search for Speedy, their only witness.
The Tahoe is spotted in rival gang territory. They set up a perimeter around it to watch for activity. Sharon releases the security video after the Tahoe is secured in order to find Speedy.
Tao, Sykes, and Sanchez arrest three suspicious men during their stakeout of the Tahoe.
Rusty tries to convince Sharon he's too sick for school. She guesses he is just trying to get out of going to dinner with Kris's parents that evening and makes him get ready to leave. Sharon offers to let Jack take Speedy's case as a court-appointed attorney. He's thrilled with the opportunity.
Emma complains about gang cases to Provenza. Sanchez yells at her for not taking gang violence seriously and for talking down to him. Buzz and Provenza also tell Emma that she's been very rude and obnoxious.
Sharon gives Jack the necessary information on Speedy's case.
The gun found in the Tahoe is the same gun used in the gas station murders. It was reported stolen from Morro Bay a month prior to the crime. The case is beginning to sound less and less like a rival gang shooting to the detectives.
Sharon and Emma begin questioning Speedy with Jack acting as his council. He professes that crime is no longer Jesus's plan for him and that he never saw the shooter's face. Speedy claims he went to look for the car in order to avoid more killing. During the interrogation, Jack intentionally mentions having had breakfast with Sharon that morning and accuses her of being unprofessional. Sharon leaves the room and slams the door as Jack continues to blatantly dismiss her authority.
Tao and Provenza begin an investigation into the Browning Security company.
Emma flippantly voices her concerns about Sharon's husband working the case. Sharon assures her there is no conflict of interest.
Rusty asks Provenza and Buzz to tell Kris that it's too dangerous for him to have dinner at her house. Provenza refuses, telling Rusty that he should know what it feels like to have someone he cares about just not show up.
In the murder room, the team pieces together that Ron Browning - the owner of Browning Security - had a fiancée named Melissa Orr who disappear four years ago. Orr had called off the wedding and refused to give back her $65,000 engagement ring. She is missing, presumed dead. Speedy used to work for Browning Security. Almost a month before Speedy got out of prison, Browning left town and stayed in Morro Bay for several days.
The team tricks Ron Browning into coming into the police station by claiming they have a lot of paperwork concerning his stolen Tahoe. Sykes prods him for information about Melissa Orr and the many times Browning threatened to assault her. Browning claims Melissa mailed the ring back to him before she disappeared. He gave it to his new fiancée.
Jack does not believe that Browning shot up the gas station just to get to Speedy. Sharon is positive Browning tried to make the attack on Speedy look like a gang shooting; Browning wanted to prevent Speedy from going to the police about having been hired to murder Melissa. Jack claims they have no case because they have no body yet. Sharon questions why Jack would know that unless Speedy told him about the murder. She leaves the office with her team. Jack follows, loudly accusing of Sharon of not following the law because of their relationship. Sharon tells him he's the one who takes their relationship for granted.
In the interrogation room, Sharon informs Speedy that Jack is her husband. Speedy immediately fires Jack, who is so furious that Sanchez must escort him out of the room. Jack snaps at Rusty. Provenza tells Jack to sit down and wait for his client.
Sanchez and Sharon cannot question Speedy without an attorney, but they can interview him. They tell him they are about to search his neighborhood for Melissa Orr's body. Speedy begins to cry and asks why God killed his little brother when he was the one who did terrible things in the past. Sharon assures him that Ron Browning killed his brother, not God. Speedy gives up his right to council and admits that Melissa is buried beneath the flower garden in his grandmother's backyard. He strangled her with her own necklace and cut off the finger with Browning's ring on it. Browning paid Speedy $10,000 to kill Melissa and get back the ring.
Ron Browning's current fiancée Kathy Thompson is brought to the station so they can see her engagement ring. Speedy had the diamonds in the ring replaced with cubic zirconium so that he could keep them for himself. The ring is a match, which proves Speedy's claim of murder-for-hire. Ron Browning is arrested for the murder of Melissa Browning as well as the murders of all four gas station shooting victims.
Jack sits alone in the murder room, lamenting that Sharon won the case. He muses about truth versus illusion. Jack implies that he "knows who Rusty really is" despite Kris's family thinking that Rusty is her boyfriend. Rusty, visibly uncomfortable, asks what he means. Jack claims he meant that Rusty is a material witness in a trial against a serial killer; if Rusty emphasizes that to Kris's parents, then her parents will break off the relationship for him.
Sharon returns home to find Jack is gone, a letter from him left on the table. She rips it in pieces instead of opening it.
