The 81st Golden Globe Awards will be presented on Sunday, Jan. 7, celebrating the past extraordinary year in both television and film. Scroll down for our official odds in all 27 film and TV categories with our projected winners highlighted in gold.
On the film side of the ceremony, “Barbie” heads into the night with the most nominations (nine), and we expect a “Barbenheimer” smash as both it and “Oppenheimer” will go home with four trophies apiece. That would mean “Oppenheimer” bats .500 on its eight nominations; other strong contenders that we predict will win awards include “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Poor Things,” which both netted seven nominations.
For television, “Succession” made history with the most nominations in a single year (nine) and will take home the most awards of the night with four. “The Bear” is next in line with five nominations, and we expect it will claim three of those.

And on the shortest day of the year, the Oscar shortlists are here. Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are back to discuss the 2023 shortlist snubs and surprises.
“Barbie” leads the way with five shortlist mentions but only across three categories: sound, original score and original song. All three of its song submissions — Billie Eilish‘s “What Was I Made For?”, Dua Lipa‘s “Dance the Night” and “I’m Just Ken” (written by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt) — made the top 15, but only two can be nominated as that’s the cap per film in the category.

With the 2024 Oscars shortlists for 10 categories arriving in late December, one key element to look out for is the international contenders with the legs to make it into categories past Best International Feature Film. This time last year, Netflix’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” established itself as a possible Best Picture nominee with multiple craft mentions, and by the March ceremony, the Edward Berger film collected the majority of Academy Awards given to below-the-line artisans.

Oscar’s music branch has had its say, naming 15 original scores and 15 songs to its shortlist for possible nomination at the 96th Academy Awards, with few surprises.
As expected, all three “Barbie” songs that were entered — Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For,” Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” and Ryan Gosling’s “I’m Just Ken” — made the 15-song list. Only two, under Academy rules, can be nominated.
The mild surprise was the citing of two new songs from “The Color Purple” (“Keep It Movin'” and “Superpower”) and two from “Flora and Son” (“High Life” and “Meet in the Middle”), while two of the biggest musicals of the season, “Wonka” and “Wish,” failed to make the cut in either category.

Today is not just significant for the solstice and the passing of fall into winter, it also is the first bell ringing in the race for Oscar as the Academy has just announced semi-finalists in 10 categories.
Fifteen movies each are moving forward in the contests for International Feature Film, Documentary Feature, Original Song and Music Score, plus the documentary, animated and live action short-film categories. Ten movies each advanced today in the categories of Sound, Visual Effects and Makeup & Hairstyling.
Not surprisingly, 2023’s box office champ Barbie leads the way with five shortlist mentions including Original Score, Sound and three for Original Song, but curiously did not make the cut for Hair & Makeup. Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon ( including two for the late musical icon Robbie Robertson in Score and Song), and J.A. Bayona’s Spanish Oscar entry Society of the Snow are next with four each.

Two of the most joyous cinematic moments of the year came when unlikely characters raised their voices in song. In “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” Jack Black brought the house down as Bowser with his plaintive plea to “Peaches.” And Ryan Gosling stole the show in “Barbie” with his declaration of independence, “I’m Just Ken.” Sure, both tones hit our collective funny bones but they also get to our hearts.
“Peaches” is a power ballad sung by Bowser at the piano in his lair. He confesses his love for Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) and reveals the motives behind his villainous activity — “everything I do, I do it for you” vibes. He is desperate to win the Princess’ hand in marriage because he loves her. Black’s voice is perfect for the song as his passion increases into a mad crescendo. It’s easily the best and most memorable part of the movie.

Box Office Records Broken By The Super Mario Bros Movie(Photo Credit –IMDb)
Super Mario Bros emerged as one of the highest-earning movies of 2023 so far, creating several other box office records. The animated movie is based on the iconic Nintendo Mario video game. It had actors like Chris Pratt, Jack Black, Anya Taylor-Joy, and others in the voice cast, and they all did a splendid job, especially Jack has been receiving a lot of praise for his voice acting and his song ‘Peaches.’
Jack reportedly wrote the lyrics of the song himself. The song is about his love for Princess Peach, and the versatile actor sang it himself. In a recent interview, Black shared his thoughts on the sequel of the video game-inspired film. The film is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and was made on an estimated budget of $100 million.

We all know that The Super Mario Bros. was one of the biggest box office hits of the year, even shooting like Bullet Bill towards the front of the all-time worldwide haul for an animated film. Yet, surprisingly, a sequel hasn’t officially been announced. But Jack Black – who voiced Bowser – has an idea of how it could play out when it finally gets the greenlight.
Jack Black told Variety (on their Awards Circuit Podcast) that while he has yet to hear anything from Illumination, he does hope he can reprise Bowser. “It has been radio silence…The only chatter has been coming from me, and I don’t even know if I’m allowed to chatter. I’ve been chomping at the bit to get back to business.” With that, Black said, “I think it should be a full musical, like what Todd Phillips is supposedly doing with Joker 2.

“Ya know, I did go full method,” reveals Jack Black to us on Crew Call in regards to how he prepped for the role of Mega villain Bowser in Illumination/Nintendo/Universal’s Super Mario Bros Movie.
“I gained seven pounds, only eating Bowser-type food, which ironically is similar to my type of food: cheeseburgers, fries, just like De Niro would,” says the multihyphenate song and thespian man.
“It’s amazing how the research for Bowser was similar to what I was already doing, but, by God, I did it.”
At the top of today’s conversation with Black is how he came to craft the power ballad “Peaches” with Tenacious D producing partner John Spiker which Bowser booms in the $1.36 billion grossing animated movie. Katy Perry had “The One That Got Away,” and well, this is Bowser’s take on that as he moans about the girl who’ll always run away,...

The fact that Warners’ Barbie so dominated the Critics Choice Award nominations that were announced on Wednesday morning — it landed a record 18 noms, five more than the next-highest scorers, Universal’s Oppenheimer and Searchlight’s Poor Things, which had 13 each — is obviously very interesting. But does it mean that Barbie is truly that much more popular among Cca members than anything else, or is it just more reflective of the fact that there are categories at this awards show that don’t exist elsewhere but inherently benefit Barbie (e.g. best comedy, best young actor/actress, a best song category without a cap on noms from one film, etc.)? Only time will tell.
However, several specific Critics Choice noms, or lack thereof, are more obviously significant.

The Golden Globes – and the Hollywood Foreign Press organization that runs them — continue to lean into the idea of them as a mysterious, shadowy cabal where no one is exactly certain of who votes for the winners. And while the ceremony has landed a proper US broadcast network this year in CBS, it's for a greatly reduced fee. And the clout of the awards themselves has certainly shrunk in recent years thanks to scandals and other issues. But they're rolling out again, and the nominations have arrived, with Barbie, Oppenheimer, The Holdovers and Killers Of The Flower Moon dominating the film side while the likes of Succession and The Bear garnered plenty of nominations on the TV front.
Barbie, as it has in so many other ways, ruled over all with the second-most nominations in Globes history (nine). On its heels, the likes of Killers Of The Flower Moon, Oppenheimer,...

This year, Golden Globes voters bestowed nominations upon more than 100 individual film and TV creatives, including actors, directors, writers, musicians, and even comedians. Most of those who appear on the ballot were widely expected to show up there, but some either slid through without much notice or have not received as much personal publicity as their projects. In order to make sure you didn’t miss any notable inclusions, take a read through our comprehensive breakdown of the year’s undersung contenders.
Often, Best Original Song is a category in which the work is highlighted more than the artist, and that certainly applies to at least part of this year’s six-slot lineup. Every nominated song is, however, attached to one or more household names, with siblings Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell (“What Was I Made For?” from “Barbie”) perhaps standing out the most due to their 2022 victory in this...

The Golden Globes have continued their annual tradition of surprising us awards pundits. A whopping 42 individuals reaped their first nominations this year. After a string of wins at recent critics prizes, Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Charles Melton (“May December”) and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”) have also scored their first-ever Globes noms. Although “The Color Purple” was snubbed in Best Comedy/Musical, it did earn bids for Fantasia Barrino and Danielle Brooks, both first-time nominees this year. See the complete list of first-time nominees at the 2024 Golden Globes below.

So this was the Golden Globes’ plan for making everybody happy: Expand the number of nominees in every category from five to six.
It’s not a sneaky plan by any means – the Critics Choice Awards, among others, have been doing it for years – but it gives you so much more breathing room when you’re putting together a slate of nominations designed to get the studios, networks and streamers back on your side, which is something the Golden Globes need badly.
After all, doing away with that pesky limit of five nominees per category means you can drop three (!) films largely or partly not in English in your Best Motion Picture – Drama category and still find room for the must-haves “Oppenheimer,” “Barbie” and “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
It lets you include a surprise actress in the comedy category, Alma Poysti from “Fallen Leaves,” without having to cut out...

If one were to rank all the major streaming services by queerness, Amazon Prime Video would be a pretty tough one to pin down.
On the one hand, you have to give credit where credit is due: One of the service’s very first stabs at original programming was “Transparent,” which in turn was one of the first shows to star a trans main character. That show now has a lot of baggage, but it’s hard to its understate historical significance.
Beyond the thorny topic of “Transparent,” Prime Video does have a good track record of releasing shows with LGBTQ characters and centering their narratives on queer themes; in particular, many of their shows focus on queer women, refreshingly avoiding the centering of gay men that defined queer TV for decades. This spring, the streamer dropped a phenomenal limited series retelling of David Cronenberg’s “Dead Ringers,” starring Rachel Weisz as twin lesbian gynecologists.
