Charming stories set in the 20-30s in a lovely Denmark seaside hotel

I was introduced into this series by an acquaintance who had me watch it and I loved it instantly.

It is a "light" TV show set in the aftermath of Danish Belle-Epoque, during the 20s, in a charming, little seaside hotel in the middle of nowhere run by a hateful, miser landlord and his struggling, hardworking wife, with a small entourage of country-side chamber maids and parlour maids.

They host the same bunch of guests every year and their stories get intertwined with those of the local villagers, in a very particular period of European history, just before the stock market crash of the 29 and when Hitler was a rising promise in Germany.

There is a half-comedy, half-drama tempo in the show, and perhaps this middle ground is the issue here: either you like this melange or it won't be convincing for you.

If you like the period and enjoy Danish shows, you will probably like it a lot. The screenwriters are very well known and skilled authors, and although it doesn't climb to the top of Nordic programmes and it lacks a little depth, it is well produced and acted, and the stories have interest for all audiences.

It is an 8 for me.

Seaside Hotel is a gift from Denmark to the eyes of the world. The cinematography is outstating, the direction always crisp and yet not hurried and the acting superb. The Series captures a time a place and representative characters over a dozen or so years from about 1928 to 40 and does so with an eye for style and detail that is rarely seen on the small screen. Heck, it's rarely seen in multi-million dollar Hollywood films either.

The cast is uniformly excellent. From the slightly ditzy maid Edith played to perfection by. Ulla. Vegby to Bertha Neumann's austere bridge playing obsessed Mrs. Fjeldso. They're all good. And they're shown at their best thanks to the wonderful writing and well paced story telling that will reel you in and keep you wanting more.

I need to make mention of Cecile Stenspil. She looks like and even more beautiful young Joan Fontain (if that's even possible) and grows with her character over the seven years she graces the screen. But they're all good. Jens Jacob Tychsen .gives his egomaniacal matinee idol role everything he's got and he's one of many. Bodil Jogerson's Mrs. Anderson is filled with grace and wisdom born of pain. She's superb.

Pay particular attention to the skewing of film directors, actors and show business in general for the fun all of it offers. The bigger more thought provoking topics the series addresses are there for reflection and these too fit right in.

Are there perhaps too many subplots? Maybe. But they all tie in. Are there too many comings and goings behind doors that close just in the nick of time? Could be. But everything is handled so well that it all just seems to work. It works like like a well trained staff of maids and kitchen help who keep everything on schedule and everything in its place.

Be sure to check in to the Seaside Hotel. The staff has made sure that your room is ready.

I love this show. Watching on Amazon Prime and can't wait for seasons 5+. The characters are all likable even those who shouldn't be. No violence or gratuitous anything. Weyse is hysterical. Mrs Andersen is so nice and even tempered. I highly recommend this. Great acting. Good scenery

Thoroughly entertaining

Although in some ways it's a series in search of a category, as it's part French Farce, part drama, part romance, and part sit-com, this is a smorgasbord of entertainment with something for everyone. Loose ends abound as characters appear then disappear without explanation, and plot lines dead-end into illogical brick walls, but that doesn't seem to matter as the relationships unfold and complications arise. It's completely enjoyable and entertaining, light and silly at times, deep and thought-provoking at others, unafraid to take on significant issues such as unwanted pregnancy and sexual identity, but balancing them against comic antics and slamming doors of questionable virtue. Nudity disappears as the series develops, but there's never any foul language, really, and while the characters smoke and behave normally for the late 1920s, it remains otherwise circumspect. The one thing missing is a link to a food recipe source; the dishes prepared in the hotel's kitchen are intriguing and look delicious. I'd like to try some of them.

I used to rely on IMDb but recently I've become concerned at the number of glowing reviews for fairly pedestrian series. Many of these from Walther presents. The scandi thriller series have become formulaic and clichéd but the reviews don't reflect this. Just watched the very first episode. Its quite fun, and they've managed to get the balance of comedy/drama fairly well which is quite difficult to do. Definitely a cut above the usual. Having now watched the first two series I have to say I'm quite enchanted. I'm already wondering how to get beyond series three which is all I can watch on All4!

One of the most delightful, beautifully done shows!

If you loved Downton Abbey, you will absolutely love this show. I cannot belief that it's been running since 2013 and I just found it. All of the actors are perfectly cast and brilliant. Visually it takes your breath away. Music is ideal and the costumes are to perfection. Love how the director threw in the food preparations. A total work of art!! Only downside is reading the subtitles as you don't want to miss any scene. You will find yourself bingeing on this one.

Comedy Drama History

Ten years is a long time, really long for TV series in Denmark. Yet Hanna Lundblad and Stig Thorsbøe managed to create a sensation that the Danish population has eagerly embraced.

TV2 has also been a perfect platform because they have truly embraced the series and put it front and center with all that entails.

Does the series fulfill its own popularity in this final season? Probably. There are some characters who get honorable endings to their storylines, while others get a more subdued, and perhaps for one character, even unhappy ending. The season struggles with its American angle, which they don't fully realize, and new characters are difficult to connect with when you know it's the last season.

Nevertheless, there's something nice and pleasantly captivating about the series, it must be said. And it deserves to pat itself on the back, as this last season has done its part.

I'd give this 100 stars if I could!

Everything about this series will appeal to those who enjoy likeable characters, good storylines, humor and light drama. I've watched it three times in less than a month, seasons 1-5. A fantastic escape from the weird world we are living in. I highly recommend this series. It does have subtitles. No violence. One of the best series I've watched in decades. Love it!!!

Don't be fooled by all the fake 10 star reviews

This is a dull series with dull characters and dull actors. There's an ugliness that lies on the surface that is hard to wash away. The acting is fine, the writing Ok, the direction slow and deliberate. What's missing is dynamic dialog that distinguishes worthwhile series. The words spoken are often trite and predictable. But worst of all are all the fake reviews here, all saying virtually the same things, obviously from a script provided to people to review. The underlying ugly spirit that reverberates throughout distracts from any entertainment value. This should have been and could have been MUCH beter.

So Good I Paid Extra

I didn't even want to watch this. My wife made me. At first, "not as bad as I thought." Then I subscribed to PBS via Amazon, just to watch more. It defies sense. How can a show about an isolated summer resort in Denmark in the 1930's be so interesting? So darn good. It is a true ensemble effort and you will care about everyone. The lynchpin is Fie, but the show is stolen by Edward Weyse, portrayed by Jens Jacob Tychsen. The following is not a spoiler, but once you read it, you will not be able to get it out of your head. So, having been warned...I'm convinced that Jens Jacob prepared for his role by watching every episode of Frasier. He is Danish Frasier, without question, right down to the body movements and the expressions. And he's looking for love like Frasier. He even plays the piano and sings in English. And the comings and goings from the hotel rooms mirror Frasier, too. We're starting Season 6 tonight. There are eight in all but only seven on PBS. Do I have to go to Denmark? I will.

Light, bright Danish delight

Seaside hotel is the perfect antidote to Scandi Noir. It's musical theme is bright and breezy, light abounds everywhere. Blue skies and golden sands are a constant and the hotel rooms windows are a magnet to to the exterior light. Every character (and there are some really memorable characters) is perfectly cast and one feels an affection even for the 'unsympathetic' ones. Individual personalities are diverse and believable. The food being prepared and served looks delicious and and compliments the frothy storylines and performances. Looking forward to seeing the remaining episodes.

Epic drama showcase of the pre-war era

Normally, I wouldn't use the word "epic" in a headline, but for this masterpiece of a show, it is quite fitting, because while it gives an aesthetically very pleasing insight into the roaring 20s and what came after, Badehotellet also adds a quite modern splash of humorous comedy and drama storytelling, not unlike many Hollywood Tv series today. This, coupled with a pinch of the famously discussed danish "Hygge" (closest english translation: 'Social comfort') and a truly amazing, concise use of dialogue, Badehotellet surely is one of the top tv series in modern danish televion history, bringing old and young together to enjoy it with equal enthusiasm.

I love the story line... I only wish the seasons were longer. The cast is unique in there are few characters that you like everything about. They are so developed and well rounded that you feel like you really know them. Love, Love this show!

I really didn't think i would like this show at all, i thought it was going to be really cheesy, but i love it. It is funny and dramatic, and never boring or drawn out.

I only wish they would call it Seaside Hotel as it's difficult recommending it to friends as Badehotellet?? Subcaptions are frustrating as they move very quickly, but it's worth it as this little gem of a series is so beautifully done. From the gorgeous cinematography to the fabulous cast to the enchanting story...you will be anxiously awaiting the next episode. Disappointed that the character Fie left the show, but her husband Mortensen showed up again who is so good. And Mr. Weyse is absolutely delightful! All of the characters you will cherish. Bravo!

1st Season is Wonderful

PBS Passport currently only has the 1 st season but it is wonderful.

The girl who plays Fie is such a natural actress. The closeups on her interesting face are really breath taking at times.

The side stories are interesting and that hotel is beautiful.

Looking foward to the rest.

A triumph! Walter Presents is always right. I love each and every woman in this show and your idea can you say that? Season 1 is, oddly, the weakest, and I wouldn't have stayed with it except for the pandemic, but so glad I did. Gorgeous, well written, perfect actors, even brought a tear to this reviewer, who has a heart of stone.

Tastefully done historic drama (pre-WWII-1940)

If your new to the foreign film industry, let me say that this is a far cry from the Bruce Lee movies. The subtitles are spot on and easy to read without grammatical errors. They certainly do not take away from the enjoyment of watching the show. The actors are fabulous! You fall in love with the characters and their own unique story.

The show touches on so many aspects of life in Denmark, and I have been fact checking for seven seasons now. It has really brought the history of Denmark onto my radar, and I have found that the show has told the history in a very polite way that doesn't detract from the drama portion of the show. I was a bit weary to watch something that was said during this time frame because I wasn't sure how certain things were going to be portrayed and if the show would filled with military fighting. It is not! You really get a true sense of what was happening in Denmark through the conversations that the guests have while on holiday at the hotel. It really and truly is thought-provoking, while being fun, upbeat and quirky.

It is beautifully done show, the cinematography is spot on, and I hope that they continue on with more episodes because, there is so much more history to weave into the story! (From the USA, huge fan.)

Must watch if your'e debating!!

This is a great show and of course im very disappointed i can't find seasons 2-6 in US!!! Great interaction of all characters of different stations. You have Love, life, the sea and even a little mystery! I love foreign films, especially those set in the 20s and before. I love seeing the sets and costumeS. This was a great show that despite being in a language i didnt speak and having to read captions kept me hooked. I had to rewind a lot because i didn't want to miss one thing!!!

A throw back in time

I like watching everything that goes back in time and this is a winner, I like that it takes place in the summer all the time and focus on how it is to be a townie visiting Jutland from time to time. It's not because there are so many things in it, but there are the normal woman-man drama, and that is what I like. The taboos gets in and you see how it was back then to be the underdog. It is nice!
