Deeply moving portrait of an incredible person. Not always sympathetic, but brilliant in his work. The film portrays both August Willemsen, but also his view on Brazil. The country he both loved and hated, often at the same time.
Willemsen translated many of the most important literarary works from Brazil to Dutch, for example Machado de Assis, Guimarães Rosa and Euclydes da Cunha. That way he showed the Dutch audience the literary world class of that country. Willemsen became a cultural ambassador.
While doing so, he struggled with women and friends, under the influence of alcohol. An intoxication that led to his ultimate death in 2007.
