Fantastic show!
madaravilson14 December 2023
Went in with no big expectations but I am absolutely shocked how much I loved this - watched it in one go! I am from Latvia so a lot of the historical themes and background knowledge is culturally very close to me, but I am pretty sure that the series translates well to other nations as well. It's like The Office and Stromberg (a German TV series with black humour) meeting the 17th century. Good actors, good story line and great jokes weaving in the 21st century as well - I laughed out loud more times than I could count. Well done, Poland, I can recommend this series to everyone! Will show it to my family too.

great witty writing and whole historical theme production
marko-trzun17 December 2023
Very good time period comedy while also touching many modern themes. Politically quite incorrect which is a great boon nowadays, the excellent witty writing, filmography, sets and costume design accompanied with a great cast makes it a must watch to all lovers of history and comedy.

Gave it a 9/10 due to some points probably getting lost to audiences that are not familiar with history, for history fans it will be a 10/10 for sure.

This from a Croatian that has some similarities with the historical setting, although not having the main social group involved, namely the Szlachta around which all evolves.

In Croatia we do have a similar type of comedy, but with the family of a Croatian Prince in early middle ages, called "Mrkomir". 1670 is on a much higher scale though, primarily in the writing sense, as it dwells much deeper in the satirical element rather than just scratching actual political themes while setting them in the middle ages.

Kudos to Poland for this production, hope for a new season soon!

Funny take on older times
Xekel14 December 2023
I found it quite humorous,

It feels like a combination of "The Office", "Modern Family" and "Monty Pathon" meets the 17 century :).

The show humorously deals with historical and modern political\social\cultural topics and events through the lens of 17th century eastern Europe.

With each episode you feel attached more and more to the different characters as they weave through their day to day events.

Excellent period costumes, music and writing that effectively captures the period and enhances the comedic story telling.

I look forward to more seasons, assuming Netflix doesn't cancel the show.

Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys period comedies.

You don't have to be Polish to enjoy!
chelseafleeman15 December 2023
I came across this show while scrolling, and I have to say, it's hysterical! I'm an American who doesn't know anything about Polish history or how to speak Polish, but I find it hilarious. Pro tip: watch it in the original language with subtitles. The dub isn't great.

There's a lot of physical comedy, plus a lot of similar quirks as The Office and Parks & Rec. Looking at the camera, forbidden love interest, incompetent boss, etc etc.

I'm only on episode 3, but it's been a great watch so far! Definitely a bright spot to an awful week. I can't wait to finish this show and watch it again and again!

Give it a chance, it'll charm you!

This is what comedy should be
n2119 December 2023
I've been quite sad that Netflix cancelled Norsemen as it was exactly the type of comedy I liked: witty, but pretending to be dumb and absurd. 1670 is just like that and maybe even a bit better. The show runners do not shy away from portraying polarising topics like casual racism and discrimination in a humorous way that first makes one laugh, but then find themselves in the show's characters and hopefully reflect a bit.

I also loved these nod to modern times they made (parking lots for horses, boat attendants telling the passengers about safety features etc.), they made us laugh every time. Hope Netflix doesn't close this one after a season or two like it loves to do.

Exceptional humor
aquaskyd22 December 2023
The series is an absolute gem, and its charm lies in its smooth, thin humor that is nothing short of exceptional. As the final episode approached, I found myself on the verge of tears, a testament to the emotional impact it had on me. What sets it apart is its impeccable sense of timing and an ability to strike the perfect balance between humor and heart.

I stumbled upon this hidden treasure on Netflix with no particular expectations, and it turned out to be a delightful surprise. Within just a few minutes into the first episode, I realized that I had stumbled upon something truly special. The humor, though subtle, is incredibly on point, leaving you with a constant stream of chuckles throughout. It's not just funny; it's downright entertaining.

What makes this series stand out is its attention to detail. Every little nuance, every carefully crafted moment, contributes to the overall brilliance of the show. It's the kind of series that invites you to pay attention, rewarding you with hidden gems and subtle jokes that might go unnoticed on a casual watch. It's this commitment to perfection that elevates it from being merely good to being exceptional.

The emotional journey it takes you on is equally impressive. The finale, in particular, struck a chord that resonated deeply. It's a rare feat for a series to be able to seamlessly transition between humor and genuine, heartfelt moments, but this one does it with finesse. You find yourself invested in the characters, rooting for them, and experiencing their highs and lows along the way.

Discovering a series that not only meets but exceeds your expectations is a rare pleasure, and this one did just that. The lack of preconceived notions allowed me to appreciate it for what it is - a masterpiece in its own right. It serves as a reminder that sometimes the best experiences come when you least expect them.

In a world where entertainment options are vast and varied, finding a series that manages to leave a lasting impression is no small feat. This one, however, manages to do just that. It's a testament to the creators' dedication to their craft and their ability to create something that resonates with audiences on a profound level.

So, whether you're a seasoned binge-watcher or someone looking for a new show to dive into, give this series a chance. You might start with no expectations, but you'll undoubtedly end with a newfound appreciation for the art of storytelling. It's not just a series; it's an experience that stays with you long after the credits roll. And in a world where content is often fleeting, finding something this special is truly a gift.

Superb!
sczarnecki-4645914 December 2023
Amazing idea for the office like comedy placed in 17th century Poland. I can only hope this is so funny also for non-polish audience.

Scenes are fantastic based in real town scenery (not a cgi), the characters are so vivid and adorable. The leading actor finally found it's perfect spot to play and show his true skills even though this is only comedy series.

I've never seen that Polish producers pulled off such a great show where even the current events are mentioed but in a very stylish way. Best of this that many problemy can be understand by eu audience.

Feel free to jump in random episode - you will immerse to this world immedietally.

Decoding the Charisma
sanadalsalt25 December 2023
Fascinating Polish series. The dialogues are excellent and the acting is good. I believe it will be more relatable to Polish audiences due to the historical references and characteristic phrases. However, what stood out to me the most, and how I perceive the series, is the clear inspiration from The Office series. I'm referring to the way the shots are framed and the actors' performances. It seems like the line between inspiration and imitation has been slightly crossed.

Jan Pawel is Michel, Anielka is Pam, and Maciej is Jim. The latter's performance is very reminiscent of the character created by John Krasinski.

Additionally, the actor who plays Jacob's younger son reminds me a lot of the character Oswald Cobblepot from Gotham. In conclusion, it's a great concept for a series, well-acted, but it feels like it's already been done somewhere else...

Rare when you stumble upon a witty comedy
purseofglitters13 December 2023
God knows, since "The Hundred Year Old Man who Jumped out of a window and Disappeared ', I can't say that I found same satisfaction in any comedy of kind.

This ain't the same perhaps but it's nearing This show is equal to 3x Prozacs..so make sure you have it on your face flicks' list... if needed. SO uplifting, such amazing acting, location, costumes, camera, choreography, dances, music And especially Hats... Plus When is the last time you find yourself watching a TV Show where All characters are Adorable??

Costumes, Location, Hats, Script,Costumes,Dialogues, location, art direction, camera, direction are all superb.

Loved casually dropped innuendo and dry humor and sarcastic yet kind references.

This is a MUST see show to relish. Hope there will be a second season..Gosh We missed it soon as it ended:((

You do Not wish to leave them when it ends..You Rather be in the set With them.

More polished, but less funny Norsemen
inc-133-7001310 February 2024
Basically, the review title says it all.

This show is another comedic take on history, this time, the history of Poland. But it's nowhere as funny as Norsemen, even though some actors can deliver as funny looks and lines, and Bartlomiej Topa does extremely fine job playing a simple-minded, but cunning rural noble. Rest of the cast... just seems to lack... that something that made Norsemen so funny. They feel more like bored theatre actors just doing what the script says. And that's what makes "1670" weaker.

Slavic rural life is pretty exotic for a location, and most cultural references are either hit or miss - a lot of the old laws and traditions are made fun of, but many of them would be clear only to most hardcode history buffs. There's also attempt to portray modern ideas in the medieval setting, and that, usually -- comes off much funnier.

I do enjoy it very much, and I do think we could use more history on our screens, but a better version of same thing already exists. And if the better thing gets you to wet your pants here and there from laughter, this one - sadly - gets only few chuckles.

That's top quality humor
Tiuo_Polt18 December 2023
The trailer is kind of weak, I wasn't convinced. But I tried it. Wow! What a pleasant surprise in a world full of garbage comedies. It's funny, it's smart, it's stupid, it's not politically correct, it's pleasant, entertaining. It reminds me of Norsemen, but in my opinion, this is way better. This comedy show is one of the best I saw in the last few years. This and "Cunk on Earth".

Too bad that probably a lot of people will not watch this show because is in Polish and they will have to read the subtitles. I am not Polish and I enjoyed so much

I cannot wait for the next season. I really hope that will be a second season. And more. 8 episodes are not enough! Please make some more seasons. The world of good comedy is so dry.

Cultural references are lost on me
vjlatus20 January 2024
Per the title of this review, the cultural references go over my head. I know nothing about Polish history or culture so I'm left taking these things at face value. There are times where I am watching a scene and I really get the feeling from the actors' body language or brief "pause for effect" beats that *this* was supposed to be a comedy moment, but I've not realised. Not really the show's fault, it's my lack of experience of Polish stereotypes. The things that make me chuckle are the things that relate to modern day issues but given an 18th century twist, or that have barely changed at all. It's not totally hilarious to me and not something that I go out of my way to watch, but it has amusing moments, so it's okay.

I preferred Norsemen as a show, perhaps it's the mockumentary style of this one that doesn't quite hit the spot for me.

Absolute Treasure!
jaredkeahey15 January 2024
Brilliant... One of the greatest TV comedies of late by a mile.

Cinematography, directing, and camera work are ASTOUNDING. When you see this level of care and commitment in a historical comedy piece, you really fall in the love with the entire project. So much care and thought went into this show. It is beautiful beyond words and really transports you to the time. So much of the comedy cannot land without such incredible immersion, which they nailed.

The cast is SO fresh and so lively. There is so, so much talent and the most amazing script and scenes to go with it. This is very witty humor and it really takes an intelligent cast to nail it. So much of the comedy comes together with brilliant bait and camera work too- huge tip of the cap. Cannot speak enough to how brilliant the cast and the team came together on 1670. The comedy is pure gold, never ending, and is all guided by some of the best directing and camera work any film has to offer!!!

10/10. Please, please, please bring us Season 2 Netflix. Huge thanks to everyone involved in 1670. Thank you, thank you!

Hysterical! The laughs just keep coming.
jgarfieldlamb26 December 2023
This is the show that should replace SNL.

This is a well-crafted and acted story. The humor is infused in almost every monument. Lots of satire of yesteryear directed right back at today. The characters are well-conceived, the actors are perfect for their roles, and the direction and script are excellent. The whole is much more than the parts of which it's made. You'll want more!

One of the cool things underlying the story is the rich history of Poland. It's fascinating to see how its historical period can be used for satirical social commentary of the times we live in today. For a moment, you'll ask yourself, have things changed? Then you'll snap out of it and laugh.

Historical mockumentary
morfindele23 December 2023
Just wonderful! A mockumentary set in the atmosphere of the Middle Ages (more precisely, the Modern era). Reminded me of The Office in both versions. Watched only the first episode so far. But I'm sure I'll watch the entire series. Especially enjoyed the jokes about bad neighbors such as Prussia and Russia. And in general, there are a lot of ironic references both to Polish contemporary life and in the broader global context. I think most of the jokes will be understood by anyone who has a basic knowledge of history. And the protagonist's desire for status is a straight reference to Michael Scott. So, highly recommend it to everyone, a cool product from the Polish movie industry.

1670 is full of laughs, and fully utilized the genre of film/TV to deliver its jokes..
gigireisner18 December 2023
Easily one of the funniest shows I've seen in the past year, and arguably the funniest of all time. Not a single episode passed without me cackling out loud with laughter while watching alone. That is very difficult to achieve, especially watching it subbed. 1670 surpassed any expectations of what an early modern mockumentary should be. Filled with numerous Easter eggs, vibrant characters and not-so-subtle political commentary the show never takes itself seriously and brings back the silliness of old visual comedies like Top Secret and Airplane. They didn't have to have amazing cinematography and lighting, but they did regardless and every scene looks like a painting. It is clear the creators had fun making this, which carried over to the audience.

Would absolutely recommend to anyone willing to watch a comedy show subbed.

The best in 23!
marcinpiotrowicz16 December 2023
The best Polish thing I saw on Netfix in 23 or maybe ever - comedy for sure.

Everything clicks - actors, scenery, costumes, climate and of course style of humor and references to the situation in and history of Poland. I don't know if people from abroad will get it the same way as a polish audience but they are so settle (but also obvious) that they probably will.

Absolutely must watch. Its very funny, light, don't try to stuff down your throat anything. Very, very pleasing. On top of that when you are able to connect the dots and see all the polish situation / character / history jokes / references that are made here its truly a comedy masterpiece.

It's Polish Norseman
tomolesrow14 December 2023
Veryy good satirical comedy about Polish nobleman, goods dialogs, climate as a serial Norseman, , near Monthy Python. Good Polish actors and actress, Polish people can laugh at the country's history first time on a movie. Good costumes, choreography , music, many references to the present times (fights for the climate , first phones, fight for womans laws). Topa is a fantastic Polish actor Herman too, This serial is very light, but he.tackles many contemporary issues in a fun and satirical way.

When I watched this. I couldn't help but compare it to the brilliant Norseman series for its equally absurd humor.

Great show
feedstoremafia14 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
In a sea of things that are mediocre or just not my cup of tea, I'm really happy that I ran across this. I love this type of humor. Pretty damn funny and the scenery is really good. Well acted and wrote. Reminds me of Parks and Recs/Norsemen. I'm really hoping that it keeps going. The first person or fourth wall shooting took a bit to get used to but I'm digging it. Kinda makes it easier to remember that they really are not trying to be to serious. Give it a shot. Just remember that is not trying to be historically accurate and it's a comedy. Now I have to finish required characters of thiiss!

Inteligence, life and history
michaelmdaves14 December 2023
1670 masterfully captures a pivotal period in Polish history through a lens of uproarious satire. The witty script navigates seamlessly between past and present, drawing sharp parallels to contemporary politics. The talented cast infuses each character with a perfect blend of charm and absurdity, ensuring a captivating performance. The intelligent humor cleverly doubles as insightful commentary, offering both laughs and moments of reflection. This production is a standout gem, effortlessly blending comedy, intelligence, and relevance for a must-see theatrical experience. "1670" faces a notable challenge as not everything translates seamlessly into English, leaving non-Polish viewers struggling to comprehend certain behaviors and dialogues. The film heavily relies on cultural nuances, making it difficult for an international audience to fully connect with the narrative. Ultimately, this linguistic barrier hampers the film's accessibility and limits its appeal beyond a Polish-speaking audience.

briliant humour
dmoreyn17 February 2024
I intend to get a full blown case of the vapours if netflix cancels this series after 1 or 2 seasons. It's the best comedy they've got at the moment. Better than the excellent Vikings and Fallet. I only wish there were more episodes. The jokes are well done, not entirely slapstick, but a bit intelligent as well, requiring some thinking and understanding of history. Polish content is across the board high quality, especially the dramas, better than other Euro shows, in my opinion. They tend to be gritty and absent of all the gratuitous hollywood frills that distract rather than enhance a series. 1670 is the perfect comedy.

1670 is sth that has never been shot on screen before!
kosiara18 December 2023
Poles think of their past as something to be proud of.... 1670 rethinks that approach and brings a lot of needed humour to the topics of: marriage, religion, middle ages and Polish&Lithuanian Commonwealth. Great series - light & entertaining.

The Main Character - Jan Pawel (maybe born at 9:37pm) with his 2 sons and daughter Aniela live in a small village in XVIIth century Poland. Aniela is just a little bit too modern, her brother joins the best XVIIth century corporation he can find - the Catholic Church... Everything is spiced with a devotional Jan's wife - Zofia.

1670 is sth that has never been shot on screen before!

Could watch it everyday
yensgf6 January 2024
Had no expectations except just pure excitement about another production based on our culture. I got so hyped up after trailer was released and couldn't wait until the premiere. One of the best if not the best polish serie ever made. Full of humor that is not overwhelming and isn't cringe at the same time. It makes you smile, even laugh from time to time and also the photos are really great. I loved how aesthetic this serie was. Each episode has its spark and you can definitely see that the crew the same as the actors did everything to bring the soul into that masterpiece. I recommend this to everyone, who's looking for a quick, funny show to spend your free time in a really pleasant way.

SUPERB
malbog6 March 2024
It's a mocumentary but is so well made that , I personally belive that the cast and the techincal crew can make a great historycal series. The director of photography and his crew are geniuses, there achieved painting like shots, the lighting is superb, i really belive that the image is superb beyound words.. The story is good, but probably is less good for the effort of the image. The look of this series is a lot better then Game of Thrones, it's a shame that is jus a mocumentary. But it must be wached, although it superbely made and I thing it woulb be easly a super hit if it wasant a measly mocumentarey.

The English dubs are well done and I recommend watching this series with them if you are an English speaker.

Every episode is funny.

Light hearted, hilarious series with great actors. Absolutely brilliant. Looking forward to more seasons!
