Welcome to another look back at the biggest hits of 2023. Today, we’ll look through the documentaries and docu-series that picked up the most points in the Netflix top 10s throughout the year.
This list is compiled with data from FlixPatrol, which tracks the daily top 10s in over 90 countries globally. Their data provides a daily snapshot of what’s trending in the TV and movie list by providing points to each title that features. Although we love their data, it’s neither perfect nor an exact measurement of viewership. The final season of The Crown got off to a slower start in Nielsen’s streaming rankings — which might have something to do with the fact that Netflix released only a part of the season.
The Emmy-winning drama was the most watched show on streaming for the week of Nov. 13-19, but its 943 million minutes of viewing was less than half of that for season five’s opening (2.13 billion minutes) a year ago. It’s worth noting that Netflix released just four of The Crown’s final 10 episodes on Nov. 16 rather than the full season; the remaining six debuted Dec. 14 (and, because of the four-week lag for Nielsen’s streaming charts, watch time figures for those episodes won’t be public until mid-January).
The Crown was the only original series in Nielsen’s overall top 10. David Fincher’s Netflix movie The Killer finished 10th with 557 million minutes of viewing, but...

Loki scored its biggest tune-in of season two for the week of its finale, rising by almost 200 million minutes over the prior week. That’s the good news.
The bad news for the Marvel/Disney+ series is that despite the jump, Loki still finished its second season well behind the first in terms of viewing time, according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings. Kids’ favorite Bluey led the overall rankings for the week of Nov. 6-12, and Friends continued to post higher than usual numbers two weeks after the death of star Matthew Perry.

Turns out, it wasn’t much of a challenge at all.
“Squid Game: The Challenge” dominated Netflix’s overall leaderboard in its debut week, when it drew 20.1 million views. The unscripted competition series picked up where the I.P. left off in 2021, bumping Part 1 of “The Crown’s” sixth season to second place (8.8 million views) for the week of November 20, 2023.
“Squid Game: The Challenge,” filmed in the UK, is an English-language series; Og “Squid Game” was a Korean-language series dubbed into local languages. As such, the scripted show technically rests atop Netflix’s “Non-English” list, though it blows away all the English-language stuff anyway.
“The Challenge” was so big it brought “Squid Game” back to the Global Top 10 for non-english series — at no. 6 with 1.6 million views — its 21st appearance. The scripted show hadn’t made the list since the week ending June 19, 2022. The long Thanksgiving holiday weekend sure helped the streams pile up.

Audiences were eagerly awaiting the final season of The Crown.
Part 1 of Season 6 debuted on November 16, quickly racking up 11.1M views in its first few days on Netflix. That was enough to boost it to No. 1 on the English-language TV charts for the week of November 13 to 19. According to Netflix, the new episodes were No. 1 in 44 countries and among the Top 10 in 85.
The final episodes are set to debut on December 14, meaning that The Crown is likely to appear in the Top 10 through the end of the year.
In second place last week was Matt Rife’s new stand-up special, Natural Selection. The special managed 7.4M views in its debut week. That was followed by All The Light We Cannot See, which was down from first place the week prior, with an additional 5.7M views. David Fincher’s “The Killer” scores a solid opening weekend win, debuting on the Netflix Top 10 during the Nov. 6-12 viewing window at No. 1 on the English Films list with 27.9 million total views following its Nov. 10 release date — a good starting performance which makes the film Netflix’s most-viewed title this week.
Starring Michael Fassbender, Tilda Swinton, and Charles Parnell, the film follows an assassin who, after a fateful near-miss, “battles his employers, and himself, on an international manhunt he insists isn’t personal,” reads the official logline.
Meanwhile on the English TV chart, Shawn Levy’s “All the Light We Cannot See” continued to stay at No. 1, hitting 10 million views in its first full week of availability. That’s a slight jump from its Netflix Top 10 debut figure of 9.8 million.
Moving up the chart to No. 2 is “Selling Sunset” Season 7 with 4.7 million total views following its first full week of availability.

A new Netflix docuseries is drawing fresh attention to Twin Flames Universe, a group that some have called a cult.
Escaping Twin Flames exposes the world of Jeff and Shaleia Divine (also known as Jeff and Shaleia Ayan), a married couple who run an online community dedicated to connecting people with their twin flames. Through coaching and various exercises, members are told they’ll be guided to the person they are destined to be with. But ex-members and family of current members say that Jeff and Shaleia are abusive and controlling and that the Tfu has scammed followers out of thousands of dollars, encouraged stalking behavior, and even pressured people to transition genders.

Escaping Twin Flames is a new documentary series on Netflix that is about an online dating group called ‘Twin Flames Universe’. Twin flame is a term broadly used to describe a perfect connection between two people who are in love. Jeff Divine and Shaleia Divine of ‘Twin Flames Universe’ grossly took advantage of the idea to sell it under the garb of helping people find a perfect partner.
What Happens In The Docuseries?
The three-part miniseries, Escaping Twin Flames, began with Paula Hardy making a police complaint regarding her twin sister, Stephanie, who seems to have been held captive by the ‘Twin Flames Universe’. Paula and her mother detached from Stephanie, as she had decided to separate from her family based on the decision made for her by Jeff and Shaleia Divine. The couple convinced Stephanie that her family was holding her back from fulfilling her dream of bringing her twin flame into her life.

Perhaps you may have already noticed but Netflix’s documentary release schedule has become … aggressive. It seems like every time something like The Devil on Trial premieres, a Get Gotti arrives quickly on its heels to bump it out of the “Top 10” on the streamer’s homepage.
That elevated pace is good news for viewers who crave a consistent content pipeline of non-fiction to consume. It also unfortunately means some quality docs run the risk of falling by the wayside before they have a chance to catch on. We certainly hope that’s not the fate awaiting Escaping Twin Flames – a Netflix docuseries that tackles one of the more interesting subjects that streaming has in some time.

Every now and then a subject comes along that seemed compelling enough to the right decision-makers to somehow become the focus of multiple projects. Seeing the competition on the horizon, producers and distributors press their pedal to the metal instead of ceding ground. This is how we end up with two documentaries about the infamous Fyre music festival (Netflix’s Fyreand Hulu’s Fyre Fraud). It’s why the market tries to bear two limited series about Texas ax slayer Candy Montgomery (HBO’s Love and Death and Hulu’s Candy). And now,...

The most perfect pairing to be found in this universe.
Sounds appealing, right? It certainly caught the interest of those who responded to the online advertisement, but the group held terrible secrets.
“Escaping Twin Flames” is a documentary about two individuals who, exploiting the vulnerabilities and emotional needs of others, made themselves rich with classes costing $200 monthly.

The latest feature from David Fincher, a big-budget drama series from Steven Knight and Shawn Levy, and an Oscar hopeful starring Annette Bening and Jodie Foster are among the standout new additions hitting Netflix in November.
With The Killer, Fincher reteams with Seven writer Andrew Kevin Walker to adapt the graphic novel written by Alexis Nolent. The film, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival this year and debuts on Netflix on Nov. 10, stars Michael Fassbender as a shadowy unnamed assassin and features a cast that includes Arliss Howard, Charles Parnell, Gabriel Polanco, Kerry O’Malley, Emiliano Pernía, Sala Baker, Sophie Charlotte and Tilda Swinton.
The Hollywood Reporter‘s review of The Killer described the film as “a satisfyingly retro, location-hopping genre exercise with fisticuffs, gadgets (albeit ones bought from Amazon) and smooth-talking antagonists that all plays like a tongue-in-cheek spoof of James Bond movies.”

Cults and multi-level marketing schemes have an awful lot in common: they target the vulnerable, separate members into different tiers to create a hierarchy for control, and only really serve the people at the very top. In the three-episode Netflix documentary miniseries "Escaping Twin Flames," filmmakers Cecilia Peck and Inbal B. Lessner argue that Twin Flames Universe might be both. The doc digs deep into Twin Flames Universe, created by husband and wife Jeff and Shaleia Ayan to be a relationship coaching service to help people find and keep their "twin flame," which is a sort of glorified soulmate. Combining interviews with former members and family of current members with footage from Twin Flames Universe's YouTube, Zoom meetings, and the Ayans' personal YouTube channels, the filmmakers expose Twin Flames Universe as something uniquely dangerous.
