A certain actor has been taking over Hollywood as of late, and his name is Glen Powell.
The actor, hailing from Austin, Texas, has a long list of credits to his name, with various appearances on television series over the years. But, he reached movie star status after starring in two of the biggest films of the last two years.
Both Top Gun: Maverick and Anyone but You were bonafide commercial hits, but they are far from the only series and movies of Mr. Powell's you'll want to add to your must-watch list.
Powell's acting career started with a small role in Spy Kids 3-D Game, and a few years later, he went on to star in The Great Debaters alongside Hollywood heavy hitters Forest Whitaker and Denzel Washington, who also directed it.
More roles would follow that, including guest stints on CSI: Miami, Rizzoli & Isles, and NCIS.

Glen Powell is using his undeniable charm to put people behind bars in the new trailer for Netflix’s Hit Man. The streaming service released the official trailer for the Richard Linklater-directed film on Thursday, showing Powell as a strait-laced professor with a hidden talent as a fake hit man.
As a part-time, undercover hit man for the New Orleans Police Department, Gary Johnson (Powell) takes on several disguises sporting fake teeth, strawberry bobs, leather trench coats, and three-piece suits to lure in criminals. But he loses focus after meeting client Madison,...

Glen Powell is a triple threat (if you count the producing part) in Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man.” Powell co-wrote, produced, and stars in the upcoming feature from Linklater, reuniting the duo after “Everybody Wants Some!!”
In their new film, Powell portrays professor Gary Johnson, “who moonlights as a fake hit man for the New Orleans Police Department. Preternaturally gifted at inhabiting different guises and personalities to catch hapless people hoping to bump off their enemies, Gary descends into morally dubious territory when he finds himself attracted to one of those potential criminals, a beautiful young woman named Madison (Adria Arjona),” per the film’s synopsis. “As Madison falls for one of Gary’s hit man personas — the mysteriously sexy Ron — their steamy affair sets off a chain reaction of play acting, deception, and escalating stakes.”

The ultra-charming and very handsome actor Glen Powell is having quite a run right now, but my dude is far from an overnight success. His first role was as "Long-fingered Boy" in Robert Rodriguez's "Spy Kids 3" more than 20 years ago, and since then, he's been steadily building his way to stardom. Small roles in "The Great Debaters," "The Dark Knight Rises," and "The Expendables 3" laid the groundwork for his star-making, charisma-filled performance in 2016's "Everybody Wants Some!!" In 2018, he helped resurrect the rom-com with the one-two punch of Netflix films "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" (a delightful and underrated gem) and the more popular "Set It Up" opposite Zoey Deutch, which launched him to Internet Boyfriend status.

Three years have gone by since it was announced that Edgar Wright was coming on board to direct a new take on the novel The Running Man, which was written by Stephen King under his Richard Bachman pen name. The Running Man was, of course, previously turned into a film back in 1987 that starred Arnold Schwarzenegger – and even though that movie was very different from the source material, Schwarzenegger is still a tough act to follow. But now we know who’s brave enough to take on the challenge. Paramount has announced that Edgar Wright’s The Running Man is set to star Glen Powell of Top Gun: Maverick!
Wright is producing the film with Nira Park and Simon Kinberg.
King’s novel has the following description: It was the ultimate death game in a nightmare future America. The year is 2025 and reality TV has grown to the point where...

Glen Powell is slowly becoming an interesting actor with the choice of films he is participating in. While he has played pivotal parts in acclaimed films like Everybody Wants Some!!, and Hidden Figures in the 2010s, he became a sensation as Hangman in Top Gun: Maverick. He followed the huge success of that film with the rom-com Anyone But You.
Sydney Sweeney & Glen Powell in Anyone But You
Powell’s sizzling chemistry with Sydney Sweeney was the highlight of the film and audiences throned to theatres to watch the film. The film became a huge hit, signaling the renaissance of rom-coms and audiences’ desire to watch them in theaters. Glen Powell is headed back to college — and to Hulu.
The red-hot star of Anyone but You and the forthcoming Twisters will star in Chad Powers, a comedy series about a disgraced college football quarterback who disguises himself and walks on to another school’s team. Powell also co-created the Ted Lasso-ish series with Michael Waldron, the creator of Loki and writer of the next two Avengers movies. It’s based on an episode of ESPN+’s Eli’s Places, in which former New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning goes undercover as a walk-on prospect named Chad Powers at Penn State (watch the episode below).
“We’re both diehard college football fans,” Powell and Waldron said in a statement. “When we saw Eli as Chad Powers, we knew that was the way into a big, fun story about this world. We’re excited to be part of this team, and...

Hulu has ordered the half-hour comedy series “Chad Powers” from Glen Powell and Michael Waldron, Variety has learned.
Powell will star in the series in addition to co-creating and co-writing the pilot with Waldron, with both serving as executive producers. The show is based on the Chad Powers character created by Eli Manning for his Epsn+ docuseries “Eli’s Places.” Manning wanted to learn more about the walk-on process for college football, so he donned a wig and prosthetic makeup so he could go undercover during the Penn State football tryouts.
The official description for the series states, “When bad behavior nukes hotshot Qb Russ Holliday’s (Powell) college career, he disguises himself and walks onto a struggling Southern football team as the talented, affable Chad Powers.”

Anchored by Richard Linklater’s exceptional feature-length “Hometown Prison,” HBO’s God Save Texas may only be a three-part anthology docuseries, but in those three parts, it manages to be wide-ranging, timely and vitally important.
While the inspiration is Lawrence Wright’s book of the same title, and the focus is the Lone Star State, the template set by Linklater, Alex Stapleton and Iliana Sosa could be applied to personal/political hybrid storytelling delving into the fractured identities of all 50 states and the artists who call them home.
Or maybe we just need more seasons of God Save Texas — premiering at Sundance before coming to HBO on Feb. 27 and 28 — since Texas represents so much of what 21st century America is likely to look like moving forward. A red state with blue cities, in which the ideology and voting interests of each demographic are far more complicated than “Democrat” or “Republican,...

Plot: A mild-mannered psychology professor (Glen Powell) interested in electronics takes a sideline bugging undercover cops in sting operations, specializing in setting up phony hits. When the usual undercover guy is suspended, he’s enlisted to pose as a hitman. He turns out to be a natural at undercover work, with the police using him to entrap people taking out contracts. Things get complicated when he falls for an abused wife (Adria Arjona) wanting to take out her husband.

Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick) reunites with filmmaker Richard Linklater for Netflix’s Hit Man, a dark comedy so weird it’s hard to believe it’s inspired by a true story. The one-minute teaser stars Powell as a hitman who enjoys pie and promises to eliminate a pretty potential client’s problems. But all is not as it seems…
Glen Powell and director Richard Linklater previously worked together on Fast Food Nation, Everybody Wants Some!! and Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood. With Hit Man, Powell also collaborated with Linklater on the screenplay.

When someone talks about a “hit man movie,” or a film about a contract killer, certain images spring to mind: a lonely soul, hollowed out on the inside and waiting across a street with a sniper rifle; a merciless killer who takes no pleasure in life while dealing out cold, calculated professionalism in his trade; maybe a lot of glowering. These are familiar tropes which can sometimes be done well—see: David Fincher’s The Killer on Netflix as Exhibit A. Perhaps, however, their familiarity is why Richard Linklater’s Hit Man has struck a chord with everyone who’s laid eyes on it.
An apparently goofy and feel-good story about a wiseacre assassin and the love story he gets wrapped up in along the way, Hit Man is the latest collaboration between the director of Boyhood and the Before Sunrise trilogy and his evermore popular muse, Glen Powell. Powell...

One of the most exciting movie releases of 2024 just got its first trailer. "Hit Man," the latest film by acclaimed indie director Richard Linklater (the man responsible for "School of Rock") received near-universal praise when it screened at film festivals in the fall of last year, and now audiences can finally get a taste of what the fuzz is about. Turns out, a lot of it may just be the chance to see Glen Powell dressing up in a lot of silly outfits. You know what, though? We're fully in.
"Hit Man" sees the latest collaboration between Powell and Linklater after "Everybody Wants Some!!" and "Apollo 10 1⁄2: A Space Age Childhood," and this time they also co-wrote the script together, based on the 2001 Texas Monthly magazine article of the same name by Skip Hollandsworth (who also wrote the article that inspired Linklater's "Bernie" as well as co-writing that screenplay...

All pie is good pie in the first trailer for Richard Linklater and Glen Powell’s new dark comedy “Hit Man.” Netflix debuted footage of the film Monday morning, giving audiences a first look at one of the biggest crowdpleasers of the fall festival circuit.
It will release on Netflix on June 7 in the U.S. and other select countries with a limited theatrical release prior.
Based on the 2001 Texas Monthly magazine article of the same name by Skip Hollandsworth, “Hit Man” follows a Houston police associate (Powell) who disguises himself as an assassin in order to catch willing clients. After getting invested in saving one particular woman (Adria Arjona) in an abusive relationship, hijinks ensue. The film also stars Austin Amelio, Retta and Molly Bernard.
Coming off the success of “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Anyone but You,” Powell writes himself the role of a lifetime with “Hit Man,” collaborating with Linklater on the script.

Glen Powell and his “Hit Man” co-writer and director Richard Linklater stopped by the Variety Studio presented by Audible at the Sundance Film Festival, where Powell celebrated his role in reviving the romantic-comedy genre. “Anyone But You,” his Sony-backed rom-com with Sydney Sweeney, has earned $64 million at the domestic box office and crossed the $100 million mark worldwide. It’s a huge win for the $25 million movie at a time when many people were writing off the genre as dead.
“At least for me, I’ve always been a fan of movies in general and I always find it silly when certain actors diminish certain genres,” Powell told Variety’s Angelique Jackson. “At its best execution, it gives an audience such joy and such fun, and as an actor you do get to play a lot of gears. To kind of scoff at a genre and look down on it is kind of silly.

Glen Powell is only 35 years old, but he’s been around the movie business since he was 10, with his first credit coming as a 14-year-old in “Spy Kids 3D: Game Over” as Long-Fingered Boy. That means, even though he’s only been a part of Hollywood’s A-List for the past few years, he has a much longer filmography to his name — and he’s confident in naming his favorite film experience to date. No, it’s not playing Long-Fingered Boy.

Multi-hyphenate talent Glen Powell is making his Broadway debut with Emmy winner Ryan Murphy.
Powell, who previously starred in Murphy’s “Scream Queens,” told Vogue that he’s reuniting with the mega-producer for a musical.
“Ryan Murphy and I, we’re actually making a musical together. We don’t really have any plans to be back in the television world together, but we’ll be on Broadway together,” Powell said.
The “Anyone but You” actor joked about a “Scream Queens” musical spin-off, saying, “‘The Chad Radwell Musical.’ That’s the funniest idea. Just the Dickie Dollar Scholars.”
In addition to Powell, the two-season cult favorite Fox series also starred Emma Roberts, Abigail Breslin, Billie Lourd, Lea Michele, and Jamie Lee Curtis. The show aired from 2015 to 2016 and focused on a series of murders plaguing a college sorority.

David Lee Roth has shared a newly recorded version of Van Halen’s monster hit “Jump.” The singer laid down the track during a 2022 session that has also yielded new renditions of other Van Halen classics.
The recording took place on May 3rd, 2022, at the Henson Recording Studio in Hollywood, California. The track features Al Estrada (guitar), Ryan Wheeler (bass), and Francis Valentino (drums).
Previous songs that have come out of that session include “Unchained,” “Everybody Wants Some!!,” “You Really Got Me,” “Dance the Night Away,” “Panama,” and “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love.”
It’s unclear why Diamond Dave chose to record new versions of these Van Halen classics. Perhaps he set out to prove that his voice was still in good shape, after receiving criticism about his live performances in recent years.
Earlier this year, fellow former Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar declared, “[Roth] doesn’t care about singing.

After the immense back-to-back reception of Before Midnight and Boyhood, Ricard Linklater hasn’t been stuck in a creative rut per se, with highlights such as Everybody Wants Some!! and Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood, but it’s safe to say he’s earned the most acclaim in quite some time with Hit Man. With the Glen Powell collaboration picked up by Netflix, hopefully the studio gives it more love than their last Linklater release. Now, the director has already revealed the first tidbits about his next project.
Speaking to Gregg Araki for Interview Magazine, Linklater has unveiled he’s planning to shoot a French-language film in Paris with French actors. “It’s like a New Wave film,” the director noted. With Richard Linklater’s Hit Man, the charismatic Glen Powell has been offered a plum opportunity to shape his image into something more complicated and often poignant. Powell stars as Gary Johnson, a philosophy professor at the University of New Orleans who moonlights as a pretend hitman in sting operations. That premise may seem far-fetched, but the script gives a logical pathway for Johnson’s nerdy tech hobby to seem appealing to the Nola police department’s surveillance teams. And, also, this story mostly really happened.
What remains unbelievable, especially to Gary’s surveillance teammates, is just how good he is at playing a seasoned contract killer. Gary develops disguises tailored to his mark’s idea of a hitman, inhabits that role until the incriminating cash is exchanged, then settles down at home with his cats Id and Ego—turns out, he teaches psychology classes as well—and a microwaveable meal.

Every year, the fall film festival season (try saying that five times fast) brings all sorts of discussion points to those who of us who are way too plugged into such things, from Academy Awards buzz for certain performances and movies to potentially controversial subject matter on the horizon and everything in between. But, ideally, these sorts of early screenings also help put certain kinds of movies on the radar for a wider range of audiences, shining a spotlight on titles that many might not have even heard of before. And, in some cases, a wave of overwhelmingly positive critic reactions and reviews can play a big role in helping them land distribution partners at a pretty penny.
Such appears to be the case with "Hit Man," the latest movie by acclaimed filmmaker Richard Linklater. Upon debuting at this year's Venice Film Festival and swiftly building up even more hype...

Netflix has made a big splash at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival by acquiring the streaming rights of Richard Linklater’s latest film ‘Hit Man’ for a staggering 20 million Usd. The action comedy, which stars Glen Powell as a professional killer who is actually an undercover agent, has been praised by critics and audiences alike for its witty script, thrilling action sequences, and stellar performances.
‘Hit Man’ follows the adventures of Gary Johnson, a hit man who takes assignments from various clients and executes them with precision and skill. However, he is not really a cold-blooded killer, but a secret agent who works for the police. He uses his cover as a hit man to infiltrate criminal organizations and bring them down from within. Things get complicated when he tries to save a woman from her abusive husband and ends up in a dangerous situation.

Having just returned from TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival), I can say that without a doubt, one of the most liked movies at the fest this year was Richard Linklater’s Hit Man. You can read my review here, but the movie features a terrific breakout performance by star Glen Powell, who plays a mild-mannered professor who moonlights as an undercover agent for the police, where he poses as a fictional hitman. Things get complicated when he falls in love with one of the people he’s supposed to set up – as played by an impossibly sexy Adria Arjona.
Given how popular the movie was, it’s no surprise that Netflix has snapped it up in their second significant acquisition of the festival. Last week, they bought Anna Kendrick’s Woman of the Hour for $11 million, and Hit Man carries a steep $20 million price tag. A theatrical component has been worked in for the movie,...

As the dual strike continues to chug along, the buzziest title of the fall festivals has found a home. The Richard Linklater-directed Hit Man, which was co-written by and stars Top Gun: Maverick breakout Glen Powell, has landed at Netflix after interest from multiple buyers, mostly the streaming services. Netflix landed it in a $20 million deal.
Hit Man tells the story of a real-life, mild-mannered psychology professor (Powell) who also posed as undercover hitman for the New Orleans police. But when he breaks protocol to help a desperate woman (played by Adria Arjona) trying to flee an abusive boyfriend, the character finds himself becoming one of his false personas, falling for the woman and flirting with turning into a criminal himself. The feature is based on a 2001 Texas Monthly true-crime article from Skip Hollandsworth, who worked with Linklater on Bernie.
Out of the Venice Film Festival, Hit Man received positive reviews.

Netflix shelled out a staggering $20 million for “Hit Man,” a (sort of) true-crime comedy from director Richard Linklater and star Glen Powell. The streaming service has acquired rights in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia and other key international territories.
The movie, which played to enthusiastic crowds at Venice and Toronto film festivals, has been one of the few notable sales from this year’s fall festival circuit. Netflix also acquired Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut “Woman of the Hour” out of TIFF for $11 million, while A24 nabbed the Colman Domingo-led “Sing Sing.” But deals have been slow to come together for other movies on the market, such as Chris Pine’s “Poolman” or Viggo Mortensen’s “The Dead Don’t Hurt.”

Exclusive: Netflix closed a $20 million deal on Hit Man, making the biggest deal at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival and of the year for that matter. After the Richard Linklater-directed noir comic thriller debuted to raves at Venice, the film was expected to fetch the biggest deal of the fall festivals so far. Hit Man did not disappoint. Hit Man stars Top Gun Maverick’s Glen Powell and Adria Arjona (Andor) playing the most unlikely romantic partners, in performances that will boost each of their careers. Especially Powell, who co-wrote with Linklater what will be a major star turn for him. Netflix got US, UK, Australia/New Zealand, India, South Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, Philippines, and Iceland. There is also a theatrical component to the deal, I’ve heard.

That Glen Powell is a gem of an actor is nothing new, but twenty years into his career, and after stealing the show in a bunch of films and series, we can all finally stop praying for him to get a leading role worthy of his talents. In “Hit Man,” Powell reunites with his “Everybody Wants Some!!” director Richard Linklater for a part that allows him to be by turns nerdy, sexy, and funny, but at all times almost unbearably charming.

Is it something in the air? At this year’s Venice Film Festival, the unofficial theme appears to be hit men. David Fincher’s “The Killer” is all about an icy methodical professional executioner. Woody Allen’s “Coup de Chance” turns on an act of murder-for-hire. And now, just in time to steal the buzz from both of those movies, we have Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man,” a true-life screwball underworld romantic philosophical thriller comedy noir about the world’s unlikeliest undercover agent. He’s a one-of-a-kind movie hero, though in more ways than not he’s just like us.
The movie, which is based on a 2001 Texas Monthly article, tells the tale of Gary Johnson, a part-time college teacher who works for the New Orleans Police Department as a tech consultant, helping to make recordings of sting operations. Then he’s tapped to go undercover himself. Why would this even happen?...

Richard Linklater’s features since his masterwork Boyhood (2014) — Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood, Where’d You Go, Bernadette, Last Flag Flying, and Everybody Wants Some!! — have been a decidedly mixed bag, but Hit Man finds him having a blast with a sexy black comedy boasting a sly streak of poignancy. Redoubtable supporting player Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick) here offers a career-boosting, range-flaunting turn as a geeky academic who stumbles into doing a very specific kind of undercover work for the police: posing as, per the title, a hit man.
But when he falls for Adria Arjona’s saucy semi-fatale femme — who at one point tries to hire him to kill her husband — farcical maneuvers are required to keep both of them out of trouble. Given the chemistry between the two leads that could restart a dormant nuclear power plant, viewers are likely to come away sated with...

Even for indie maverick Richard Linklater, his 23rd feature Hit Man is an inventive blend of genres and tones: black comedy, romance, noir, thriller and psychological study. But all of it told with a delightfully light touch.
The film is based on a true-crime magazine article written by Skip Hollandsworth, the Texas-based journalist Linklater collaborated with on his 2011 film Bernie, starring Jack Black. Hit Man tells the story of Gary Johnson — a real-life, mild-mannered psychology professor who moonlit as an undercover hitman for the New Orleans police. Richard Linklater’s Hit Man debuts out of competition in Venice this evening, and while the story follows a professional killer, the filmmaker told the press corps today, “I’m pretty sure movies invented hitmen, they aren’t real.”
His theory, “Have you ever heard of a hitman being arrested? You hear of people soliciting hitmen all the time, but they don’t exist. Mobs, drug cartels yes… but this idea, that couldn’t be more clear. Like, there’s no such thing that you meet someone that you’ve never met that you just pay like you’re paying them to mow your lawn to kill someone… It would be so easy to arrest them.”
The film aims in part to deconstruct the notion of the gun for hire. Linklater added, “The more interesting thing is why we love that character so much. It goes with cinema, there’s so many great hitmen.

Honestly, it's kind of hard to believe that it's only been 25 years since the R-rated romantic comedy "There's Something About Mary" ranked among the top five-grossing films of 1998. If you're a millennial or older, that probably feels like an actual lifetime ago. Meanwhile, the vast majority of Gen-Zers weren't even alive to be scandalized by Ben Stiller's "hair gel" in the Farrelly brothers' massively popular raunchfest.
Recent movies like "Blockers," "Good Boys," and "Booksmart" have done a fine job of keeping that film's mix of sweetness and debauchery going. Thankfully, they've also moved away from the misogyny, homophobia, and dubious handling of consent that too often marred otherwise enjoyable older entries in the bawdy comedy tradition. However, compared to the heyday of R-rated rom-coms and comedies in general that came after "Mary" — when the likes of "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," "Wedding Crashers," and "Knocked Up" reigned triumphant at the box...

It’s been nine years since Richard Linklater, chiefly) to tell a coming-of-age story like no other.

Despite an uptick in sports movies, the days of Bull Durham, The Natural and Moneyball are long behind us
The crack of the bat. The roar of the crowd. The green grass and the brown dirt. These are the sights and sounds that bring joy to baseball fans every April, both in person and on the silver screen. Historically, baseball films are released in the spring to coincide with Opening Day, when even the most deadened fanbase can spare a smidge of romance and optimism. The Bad News Bears, Major League, Field of Dreams, Fever Pitch and 42 were all released in April. This year, there are none to be found, and that’s not a scheduling accident. A baseball film hasn’t had a significant theatrical release – in any month, let alone April – since 2016, when Richard Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some!! landed with a thud at the box office.

Paul Mescal Replaces Blake Jenner In Richard Linklater's 20-Year Adaptation Of Merrily We Roll Along
Variety is confirming a story first reported by Above the Line that up-and-comer Paul Mescal is replacing Blake Jenner as the lead in Richard Linklater's ambitious film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's "Merrily We Roll Along." Linklater is taking a "Boyhood" style approach to this adaptation where he'll be shooting this film over the course of 20 years, so I guess if they were going to make any big changes now's the time to do so!
Jenner, who worked with Linklater in "Everybody Wants Some," has been mired in controversy recently after admitting to psychological and physical abuse against his partner. Officially, there hasn't been a statement from Linklater or the studio over whether or not Jenner was let go because of controversy or whether there was another reason (like the always dependable catch-all known as "creative differences"), but the end result is the same: Jenner is out and rising...

And 2022 proved to be a major year for both Powell and Kate Hudson. His career soared to new heights after he played a naval aviator in two different films — the prestige biopic “Devotion” and the rip-roaring Tom Cruise smash “Top Gun: Maverick.” Hudson, who reveals herself to be a huge “Top Gun” fan, marks a return to richly comedic work as a loony socialite in the “Knives Out” sequel, “Glass Onion.”

Devotion director Jd Dillard knew what was in store when Jonathan Majors was scheduled to perform his Korean War drama’s most powerful scene, but the performance still hit harder than anyone expected.
Devotion chronicles the heroics of the first Black naval aviator, Jesse L. Brown (Majors), during the Korean War, as well as his relationships with his loving wife, Daisy (Christina Jackson), and wingman Tom Hudner (Glen Powell). Prior to each flight, Brown performed a ritual in which he would look in the bathroom mirror and recite all of the horrible remarks that have been said to him over the course of his life.
For Dillard, it was most important that his actor feel safe on the unusually quiet set.
“That scene hurt, man, and it’s supposed to hurt,” Dillard tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s one of those scenes where...

It could be argued that, more than any other modern filmmaker, Richard Linklater certainly takes his time with his projects. When watching a Linklater film, viewers can understand the passage of time and its effect on people and their relationships. Such themes are evident in his "Before Trilogy," which followed the same two characters in a set of films that Linklater made every nine years. "Boyhood" is also a film whose production spanned 12 years, shooting the project for a few weeks annually. While these two sets of Linklater projects are apparent with their themes, another group of films is a little less evident in its use of different experiences to convey the passage of time.
