Young adult Kelly Turner assumes the guardianship of her similarly aged autistic brother Jesse Turner following the death of their parents. The other option is to institutionalize him. Although Jesse is in school when she is working as a telephone customer service rep, Kelly has to consider Jesse when she is deciding what to do with her personal time, which in general does not leave her much of a life for herself. The other difficulty with Jesse, who cannot grasp certain concepts fully like death, is that he often has violent fits of anxiety, which Kelly needs to control with antidepressants. Because of the anxiety she faces is looking after Jesse, Kelly is not averse to downing Jesse's medication when she feels the need herself. The aftermath of an incident with Colin, one of her coworkers who would like to date her, will provide Kelly with a more complete perspective of the situation.
