It may be a little boring to say this, but I find that I like WWE more when they get down to the business of actual wrestling. I’d argue that this is what should be happening on a pay-per-view anyway and yes the storyline has to be present of course but the actual fighting in the match should have more importance than the drama of the event. This is why I found myself enjoying WWE Payback 2014 because it focused on actual fighting for the most part, though there was the Daniel Bryan segment but this was just a reason to get him at the event in some form.
Starting off WWE Payback 2014 with a Cesaro match is a good idea because he normally brings quality. Although Sheamus isn’t the most technical wrestler the WWE has got the match still had good chemistry. Putting Cesaro’s style against Sheamus...

One week removed from Nxt Takeover, and the wrestling world is still abuzz about the WWE’s developmental talents. Not only was the show a great one, with high drama and quality in-ring action, it’s arguable that the Nxt Special was a better show top to bottom than WWE Payback, which featured the likes of Triple H, The Shield, Randy Orton, John Cena, and company as opposed to lesser known entities like Sami Zayn, Tyler Breeze, and Charlotte who were featured on Nxt Takeover. The fact is that the show one week ago proved two things: 1) The Divas Division in the WWE is a joke compared to what the women have going on in Nxt, and 2) the WWE has some bright performers on its horizon.
The question is, will these talents translate to the main roster? They all have the ability, but as we’ve seen, the...

WWE Payback was, by most accounts, a great pay-per-view for WWE. Despite not having a WWE World Heavyweight Championship match on the card, the company managed to pack the show with memorable moments and some really great wrestling matches.
The two biggest matches on the card featured Bray Wyatt taking on John Cena in a Last Man Standing Match and The Shield taking on Evolution in a No-Holds Barred Elimination Match. Both bouts delivered some insane spots that were very dangerous and a lot of excitement. The outcomes to the matches may not have surprised many of the people watching at home or in the arena, but the way the matches were won is what will stick with fans for quite awhile.
John Cena managed to keep Wyatt down for the 10-count by burying him under some stage equipment and The Shield had a clean sweep over Evolution.

The WWE Payback event from Chicago featured a lot of predictable outcomes, plenty of weapons being used and perhaps the end of some long term feuds. It also might be the last time we see Batista for a few months in a PPV setting although his availability always seems to be changing.
All three champions successfully defended their championships with Sheamus, Bad News Barrett and Paige all winning clean. The WWE World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan is still on the shelf with a neck injury, but he did have a role in a newsworthy segment. The tag team champions The Usos had a presence on the show too, even though they weren’t in a match.
What the show lacked was the element of surprise. There were no heel turns, no surprise finishes and nothing that would be considered a major happening. That’s not a bad thing necessarily,...

WWE Payback was a decent watch if you have the WWE Network, but if you paid for it on pay per view, you’re probably feeling left short.
The wrestling was never terribly poor, but it was invariably dull, it felt like the whole show we were waiting for something bigger to happen. The main events of Cena vs Wyatt and Shield vs Evolution did try their hardest to deliver, but were impaired by the fact they felt too much of the same. It was nothing you won’t have seen before. The biggest positive coming out of the show is that it appears to have ended several big feuds, leaving the path clear for some fresh momentum going forward.
The opener on the Network was Hornswoggle vs El Torito in a mask vs hair bout. Torito won and Hornswoggle’s hair was shaved off. This was a...

WWE Payback takes place this weekend, with the key sell being a rematch of The Shield vs Evolution. That’s proving a point of derision for some fans, who view the pay per view as a lazy and contrived effort. That assertion is backed up with the fact that we have yet another rematch as the co-main event, John Cena vs Bray Wyatt going into battle once again.
The problem for WWE is that the Cena / Wyatt bout has passed it’s sell by date, the feud started in January, it’s now June and the initial enthusiasm has been drained. The main event of Evolution vs The Shield is also problematic, we already seen the Shield dispatch of Evolution at Extreme Rules, so there’s really no need for another match. Despite these criticisms, current WhatCulture research illustrates that fans still have an interest in watching Payback: in a sample of 344 people,...

With WWE’s next pay-per-view (or ‘special event’) happening on June 1st, the creative team find themselves in a delicate situation. The neck injury sustained by Daniel Bryan leaves them without a WWE World Heavyweight Champion and reduces the show’s star power even more. Coming from Chicago for the second consecutive year, Payback only has rematches of Evolution vs The Shield and John Cena vs Bray Wyatt, along with an Intercontinental Championship match between Bad News Barrett and Rob Van Dam. Whilst the two main events will be interesting and should deliver in quality, these rematches won’t convince non-Network subscribers to fork out $45. And with the WWE’s stock plummeting recently, the corporate staff in Connecticut certainly doesn’t want to miss out on money!
In a rare move, a promo has been announced for Payback, where Bryan has to either surrender his title or his wife Brie gets fired.

This Sunday’s WWE Payback event takes place following a tumultuous month of May news for WWE. From the stock going down significantly causing Vince McMahon to lose approximately $350 million to the WWE Champion Daniel Bryan needed neck surgery, it’s been full of bad news. It feels like the music of Bad News Barrett is going to start up any minute now or maybe an Undertaker like lightning bolt is going to strike down on WWE.
The good thing about Payback is that June is a new month and Chicago is arguably the best city that WWE routinely visits. The crowd will certainly help things even if the build up to some of the matches has been pretty poor.
While this isn’t a piece that will predict what’s going to happen, here is something you can take to the bank: There will be Cm Punk chants all night long.

This week’s edition of Raw was the last episode before WWE Payback this coming Sunday in Chicago. The full card for Payback looks to be set now after the announcements of several matches.
In addition to the matches, we will see a segment where Daniel Bryan has to decide if he’ll give up the WWE World Heavyweight Championship or if Stephanie will fire his wife Brie Bella. It’s a good way for them to involve Bryan on the show while he’s still dealing with an injury. There’s still no clear indication of what WWE is going to do regarding Bryan’s title(s), but they are continuing the storyline at Payback.
Here are the matches that are announced:

For decades, New York City stood as the greatest crowd in the WWE’s traveling circuit. It was the home of Madison Square Garden, which was the WWE’s home base. It showcased the first, 10th, and 20th Wrestlemania. Although Canadian crowds started to rival the intensity of New York in the late 90s and early 00s after the Montreal Screwjob, New York still ruled as the top crowd.
That status began to change over the past few years in the favor of Chicago, concurrent with the ascension of Cm Punk as a top star in WWE. Punk openly wears his love for Chicago on his sleeve (the four stars on his wrestling tights symbolize the four stars on Chicago’s flag), and Chicago has embraced him right back. That enthusiasm carries over into the entire show, and Chicago has overtaken New York as the top WWE crowd.

This week’s Raw provided us with more answers when it comes to the matches that we’re going to see at Payback on June 1st in Chicago.
We already knew that Evolution would face off against The Shield, but it was announced on Raw that will be a No Holds Barred Elimination Match. That likely means that there will be no tags in the match. Weapons will be allowed. It will only end when all three members of one side are eliminated. There are a lot of ways that the match could go and it’s that unpredictability that will make it an awesome match.
The storyline between John Cena and Bray Wyatt was futhered on Raw as they continue to build up their third straight PPV match at Payback. The stipulation for their match will be a Last Man Standing Match.

No one individual is bigger than the WWE, and the company has done a great job moving on from Punk, and making new stars. The Wrestling Observer is reporting that Daniel Bryan will miss the WWE Payback show, with his neck surgery recovery time being 6 to 8 weeks which may just see him get back in time for the Money In The Bank show.
Most of the details around the minimally invasive surgery are being kept quiet and WWE officials have said nothing on the injury. What has been revealed is that Bryan was examined in the last week and a judgement was made that minor surgery was essential sooner rather than later. At the Raw taping on the 12th of May there wasn’t many people who knew about Bryan’s condition and the show had to be completely rewritten on the day. That illustrates just how quickly this has all been thrust upon Bryan and WWE.

The next WWE PPV is Payback from Chicago on June 1st and after this week’s Raw as well as Smackdown taping the lineup is starting to take shape.
Two rematches from Extreme Rules have been confirmed: Evolution vs. The Shield and John Cena vs. Bray Wyatt.
Evolution’s rivalry with The Shield was the main focus on Raw. It seems like they’re going to build to something other than a regular 3 on 3 tag match. Perhaps a Chicago Street Fight is what they’ll go with. It could also be a 3 on 3 elimination style tag.
The Wyatt/Cena match became official at the Smackdown tapings with the expectation that it will be a Last Man Standing match. They set it up two weeks ago with Cena saying he was still standing, then Wyatt fired back on Raw mentioning the stipulation and Cena has agreed to it. It...

Following on from the success of WrestleMania XXX and Extreme Rules, the WWE will be looking to make it a trio of enjoyable pay-per-view shows in June, as the Payback event rolls around once again. This is only the second hosting of the show following a 2013 event that saw John Cena defeat Ryback for the WWE Championship – which seems like a long time ago now, especially given the recent fortunes of Ryback.
The 2014 edition looks set to be a pretty enthralling one, with some exciting rematches likely to take place, as well as some fresh, interesting feuds to give the card some serious substance and some much-needed depth. Although there will surely not be as many stipulation matches as Extreme Rules, there is still certain to be plenty of action both inside the ring and out, as the WWE gears up for another of its huge shows – SummerSlam.

We are a month removed from WrestleMania season, a time of the WWE year that is drenched with hype and prediction and potential. Heading into Extreme Rules, the card seems like it could be good and there is potential for some of the matches to really turn some heads. So let’s get into this review shall we?
The pre-show for Extreme Rules consisted of an “expert panel” featuring Josh Matthews, Booker T, Alex Riley and Sheamus and they discussed the upcoming event and the matches booked upon it. We then went to ringside for the pre-show match.
Extreme Rules Pre-show Match – WeeLC Match – Hornswoggle vs. El Torito
What the hell is a WeeLC match, you may ask. Well, I asked the same damn thing. Is it a match in which combatants can use chairs, ladders and urine to defeat their opponents? No, it isn’t, though that sure would have been a spectacle.

The Buried Alive match is something that WWE started doing back in 1996. It’s a match designed for The Undertaker because as an Undertaker we’re supposed to think he buries people. Since pro wrestling is silly, we also have to think that he’s willing to bury people alive in the context of a wrestling match.
It’s hard to know if fans think these matches are popular because they really haven’t done a lot of them. There are just five of them that have been televised with four taking place on PPVs most recently in 2010 and one on Smackdown in 1999.
The idea behind the match is that you have to beat up your opponent so bad that you literally knock the guy out to the point that you can dump him in a pit of dirt set up by the entrance. In most of these matches,...

It is a truth universally acknowledged that professional wrestling isn't really a sport as such, and it follows therefore that we can't really call the participants sportsmen. There's no denying, however, that despite the outcomes of matches being scripted in advance, the actual bouts themselves are legitimate displays of incredible athleticism and the wrestlers involved are more than worthy of being called athletes.
The 'wrestling is fake' argument has raged for decades, and I'm not here to try and convince you otherwise. I am here, however, to put forward the hypothesis that while we may not give wrestlers the respect that they deserve as athletes, there is a very credible argument for treating them with the same reverence that we afford our favourite movie stars. Let me explain.
Wrestlers and movies have long gone hand in hand. Hulk Hogan brought the WWF (as it was back then) into the mainstream...
