Adelaide film festival: This zombie movie, with soul and pathos, is one of those in which the Z word is never uttered
The time it takes for a bitten person to transform into a slobbering, brains-hungry ghoul in a zombie movie is often commensurate to the importance of the character. Expect a quick chomp-chomp, now-you’re-an-oogie-boogie for those on the peripheries of the story, and a protracted departure – with speeches, rueful expressions and rushed inheritance planning – for the most important players.
In Cargo, from first-time feature film-makers (and co-directors) Ben Howling and Yolanda Ramke, the time it takes to turn from normal to Romero monster is supposedly the same for everybody: about 48 hours. Therefore Andy (Martin Freeman) has two days to find somebody to take care of his infant daughter, after he is chomped on by his newly turned wife Kay (Susie Porter).

With big roles in The Hobbit and Sherlock behind him, Martin Freeman is now swapping fighting orcs and master criminals for surviving a zombie outbreak in upcoming UK indie thriller Cargo. We haven’t really seen too much of the film to date, but that’s now changed, as Bloody Disgusting have got their hands on a new bunch of images this week and you can check them out in the gallery down below.
From what we understand, Freeman plays a man named Andy in the movie, who’s described as a “father who, stranded in rural Australia in the aftermath of a violent pandemic and, infected himself, desperately seeks a new home for his infant child and a means to protect her from his own changing nature.” An updated synopsis also adds that “salvation may lie with an isolated Aboriginal tribe, but to gain access he must first earn...

'Jasper Jones', released in March, is the third highest grossing Aussie film this year..
There was a lull in Australian films released theatrically in June so the total grosses for local titles this year have.only ticked up to $42.95 million.
Even so, that is a vast improvement on the paltry 2016 calendar year total of $24.1 million.
No high-profile Aussie title is confirmed to open in the next few months so the 2017 scorecard may not go far beyond $50 million.—.unless there are one or two breakouts or more films are added to the slate.
Umbrella Entertainment is launching Descent into the Maelstrom, a documentary about the Australian band Radio Birdman from brothers Mark and Jonathan Sequeira, on July 20.
Madman is releasing Jeffrey Walker.s comedy Ali.s Wedding in August and Jen Peedom.s documentary Mountain in September, while Transmission has dated Karina Holden.s marine doco Blue for October.

One of the time-tested tropes for the movie industry has always been how and when the world might end. Think back over the years and there have been plenty of blockbuster imaginings on how we might all meet our doom. From way back in 1951 when When Worlds Collide was released, through to films like The Rapture in 1991 and The Road in 2009, there are plenty of these kinds of films around. Most of them are pretty bleak - but then that’s fair enough when we’re talking about the destruction of our planet and the population on it.
In the end of the world movies produced so far, many have a fictional basis, such as a plague with a zombie mutation that means the human population is wiped out as infection spreads, but there are also some that have been based on real scientific conjecture, with either a meteor crash...

Yolanda Ramke and Ben Howling are the brains being the story and they have adapted their short film into a feature film that stars Martin Freeman (The Hobbit, Sherlock). You can see the first photo of him in the film above. It follows the same story as the short, but the story will be padded with more adventure and drama.

Martin Freeman is an actor that's covered a lot of ground in his career and, as such, has developed a very strong, and very varied, following. The actor has appeared in a classic sitcom (BBC's The Office), a grandiose fantasy trilogy (Peter Jackson's The Hobbit films), a hit TV crime drama (FX's Fargo), as the beloved sidekick Watson in the stellar Sherlock Holmes TV series, and even entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe earlier this year when he appeared in Captain America: Civil War. Now Freeman is going to check out something he's never done before: A zombie movie.
The film, Cargo, is based on the celebrated 2013 Australian short of the same name. The original was directed by Yolanda Ramke and Ben Howling, and the duo has been tapped to make their feature debut by making this new version of Cargo, with Freeman as their star.

Sherlock and Captain America: Civil War star Martin Freeman has inked a deal to headline apocalyptic thriller Cargo, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Word of Freeman’s casting surfaces from Cannes, where Bankside is handling international sales. First hatched by Aussie filmmakers Ben Howling and Yolanda Ramke as a seven-minute short, Cargo is rooted in a world ravaged by a zombie apocalypse, with THR noting that Freeman is in line to play “a father who must try save his infant child at all costs. When he becomes infected following a violent attack and with only 48 hours before he transforms into one of the very creatures he’s fought to evade, Andy sets out on a precarious journey to find a new guardian.”
Howling and Ramke are poised to make their feature-length debut with the project, ensuring that the essence of the pair’s short film remains intact as it shoots for the big screen.

Sales agents from across the world yesterday voted David Ngo and Rabbit as the producer and project at the Melbourne International Film Festival’s 37º South Market to attend the UK’s Production Finance Market (Pfm) in October.
Rabbit is a psychological thriller about a girl’s search for her abducted twin sister and it has actors Abbey Lee (Mad Max: Fury Road) and Alex Russell (Chronicle) attached.
It is written by and will be the feature directorial debut of Luke Shanahan, who met Ngo in 2009 when both had films competing at Australian short film festival Tropfest.
“It’s in the style of Let The Right One In and Rosemary’s Baby,” said Ngo, whose first feature was director Nick Matthews’ One Eyed Girl, winner of best feature at last year’s Austin Film Festival.

The Babadook producer Kristina Ceyton is teaming with Us producer Russell Ackerman to make Cargo, a post-Apocalyptic thriller adapted from a 2013 Tropfest finalist.
Ceyton met Ackerman, who was Guillermo del Toro.s development executive for six years and worked on films such as Mama, in Los Angeles.
Ackerman approached Ceyton after seeing The Babadook and asked to come on board the project, which will be co-directed by Yolanda Ramke and Ben Howling and scripted by Ramke, who collaborated on the short.
The saga of a guy who is stranded in the midst of a zombie apocalypse and is desperate to protect the precious cargo he carries, his infant daughter, the short has been viewed more than 6.7 million times on YouTube.
Meeting Ackerman, who launched Addictive Pictures with John Schoenfelder last year, was one of the benefits of Ceyton.s six-month attachment with Glen Basner.s production and international sales house FilmNation,...

Following up on my previous article, “Watch 15 Great Horror Short Films,” which received a very positive response, I’ve researched and collected 13 more superb horror short films. As with the first article, I limited the choices to stand-alone live-action horror short films not produced for an anthology film and the selections were narrowed down by availability.
In further keeping with the criteria of the first article, animated horror short films and horror-comedy short films were excluded from consideration as both of these categories would make good subjects for their own individual articles. Sorry, Brutal Relax and Fist of Jesus fans.
It should also be noted that a number of highly regarded horror shorts readers might clamor to see in an article like this such as Ryan Haysom’s Yellow continue their long festival runs and have not been posted for online viewing and were therefore not considered for this piece.
