Intriguing mystery but too many other plots - Look out for excellent final shot :)

The mystery is original enough but I'm not enjoying the Esther / Zoe stuff, apart from the way it parallels with Martha and Anne. Really Esther should spell it out to Zoe that her bad behaviour puts Esther in a difficult situation professionally, but mum also needs to praise daughter more when she does stay on track. Also this episode missed 'pre-twist' Richard - whilst I love there's a range of female characters, they do outnumber comedic Humphrey and Kelby, so Richard had filled a gap and balanced the show, plus he and Anne were super sweet together which contrasted with the mystery plot. There are the expected sad elements in this edition, but unusually, it lacks real laugh-out-loud moments. However, there's a lively nod to Humphrey's past life in the last scene - look out for a fun reference to an old friend in the closing shot.

This episode has a much different feel than all that came before. There is a different, darker vibe to this from the first shot. Humphrey was very different in this episode. He wasn't as bumbling as he usually is. I even came to IMDB to see if maybe Kris directed it. Back when MASH owned the airwaves, I could always tell when Alan Alda directed an episode. Hawkeye was different in those episodes.

I hope this series is moving in the direction of this episode. Humphrey needs to grow and become less Inspector Clouseau.

It's also great that we're getting to know more about Esther. I don't the Zoe storyline, but willing to give it time.

Episode 5

The team jump into action when Niamh Kirby is found with an arrow on her back.

She survives but DI Humphrey Goodman believes Niamh is a troubled woman. She is in early stages of dementia even though she is relatively young.

Her husband Lewis went missing some years ago and Niamh believed that her brother in law Patrick killed him. The police investigated but there was no proof.

Patrick claimed that his brother was unhappy in his marriage and went off grid. Now living in America.

There was also a dispute over Patrick's plan to develop some land for a hotel which angered environmental activists.

If Patrick was a suspect in trying to shoot his sister in law with a bow and arrow, he has a watertight alibi.

Nothing straight about this story. A hissable baddie who is quickly out of the equation. With no other plausible suspect, the story could only go one way.

I did find the story did get messy. Why did no one check with US Immigration about Lewis Kirby's whereabouts. You cannot just go to America and decide to just settle there.
