This year’s Oscars were as much a celebration of books as they were cinema. Five of the 10 best picture nominees were based on books, and three of those – “Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things” and “The Zone of Interest” – took home the most statues overall. Even the winner for best animated picture, Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron,” was loosely inspired by a 1937 novel Miyazaki had read as a child.

For generations, every reader repeated the same phrase, “The book is better than the movie.” The phrase became a critical reflex to some of the most mediocre adaptations until Hollywood decided to not cut corners and genuinely pay more attention to the source material. As a result, fans raised questions when books turned into movies. Until the entertainment industry did justice to the books justice by creating memorable movie or TV Series adaptations such as The Lord of The Rings, The Godfather, Pride and Prejudice, Harry Potter, and so much more.

In any given year, British TV can be relied on to provide plenty in the way of crime drama, and 2023 was no different. Between these returning series and newcomers A Town Called Malice, Blue Lights, Marlow, Payback, Rebus, Steeltown Murders, The Gold, The Sixth Commandment, Wolf and more, crime continued to flourish on the small screen.
Happily though, that was far from all that UK TV offered this year. There was fantasy too, in the form of Netflix’s South London super-powers drama Supacell, ghost detective series Lockwood & Co., Greek and Roman mythology series Kaos, and sci-fi in Prime Video’s The Rig.
Add to all those the romances, dramas inspired by real-life, and several other book adaptations, period and otherwise plus music-based dramas Champion and This Town, and it was a pretty full slate.

For the last five years, January has meant one thing to the cast of Ghosts: trundling over to West Horsley Place in Surrey to film the next series. Not in 2024. The BBC comedy’s final episode is set to air this Christmas, and after that, what do this in-demand lot have planned?

As Larry Rickard told Den of Geek, “It’s not like we’re [famously fractious 70s soft rock band] The Eagles and we hate each other!” A Ghosts reunion down the line “wouldn’t be a mountain to climb,” says Rickard. “It’s a door that’s shut but obviously, doors have hinges and handles.”
And ghosts can just walk through them, we venture? “Well exactly, they haven’t even got to go to the effort of opening them.”

“A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder” is based on Holly Jackson’s bestselling book-series about 17-year-old Pip, who finds herself drawn into a murder investigation when she begins to suspect the police have got the wrong man.
Moonage Pictures are now adapting the book alongside the BBC (who own a minority stake in Moonage) and German co-producers Zdf, with “Wednesday” star Emma Myers cast as Pip.
With the project a Mipcom priority for BBC Studios, who are repping international distribution rights, exec producers Matthew Read and Frith Tiplady sat down with Variety to discuss why “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder” has the potential to rival the Queen of Crime herself, Agatha Christie.
Why did you decide to adapt the book?

Wednesday star Emma Myers is to lead the BBC’s adaptation of Holly Jackson’s A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder.
Myers, who plays Wednesday’s werewolf roommate Enid Sinclair in the Netflix smash, will star as Pip Fitz-Amobi. Smart and single minded, she isn’t sure about whether, five years ago, schoolgirl Andie Bell was murdered by her boyfriend Sal Singh. But if Sal Singh isn’t a murderer and the real killer is still out there, how far will they go to keep Pip from the truth?
Myers stars opposite newcomer Zain Iqbal, who plays Ravi in the adaptation of Jackson’s best-selling mystery thrillers. Red Rose’s Poppy Cogan is writing and Dracula star Dolly Wells is directing.
The show from Pursuit of Love producer Moonage Pictures is one of youth-skewing Normal People network BBC Three’s most high-profile commissions of recent years.
