Good storyline, bad set design

Good storyline, good acting, appreciated the prayers before meals, good sharing of feelings between Drew and Aiden. The downfall was the REALLY overdone autumn decor - EVERYWHERE, in EVERY scene in EVERY location. The paper leaves in the yards, on the chairs, on the stair bannister, bed headboards, walls, in the school classroom, on the porch, on the fences, on the curtains, all over the kitchen, doorposts, shelves, door wreaths, etc., etc. They even included trashy-looking brightly colored flowers at the fishing lake - they looked like litter sitting on top of the bushes. It's the same stuff everywhere, and WAY TOO MUCH. The set designers need to realize that a little goes a long way, and that the same red and orange decor just gets boring if it's seen everywhere constantly in every scene. And to add to the insult, the house gutter was painted bright orange, which didn't match the red door color - but just over saturated the house scene. No one paints their home just for autumn! Tone it down, folks. This is so unrealistic it's a distraction from the storyline.

I could be wrong, but it also seemed that the photographic saturation in the red, orange, and yellow tones was being enhanced in many scenes. Even the orange basketballs in the gym seemed to be "glowing."

Hallmark is the master of plastic colored fake-looking flowers stuck everywhere in their rom-coms. Don't copy their mistakes (which go way beyond decor). We want better for GAC family. Rethink the need for overdone decor before making future movies and tone it down! (I subtracted 2 points for this, I'd rate the movie a 9 if the decor was more tasteful and less of a distraction).

Unbeleafable

Great American Family is trying hard to compete with Hallmark, but these movies continually look cheap and cut obvious corners. As other reviewers have pointed out, the leaf decor is over the top and ridiculous. No pumpkins or hay bales, and not one apple in sight -- at an apple orchard! Also, there's no character development and the story is too simple to stretch into a full-length feature. Where had Jessica Lowndes and her son been living before coming to Chestnut Hollow? What happened to her kid's father? Is he in the picture? Who is her best friend who drops by occasionally? How did this orchard stay in business without obvious things like a petting zoo and a maze? And isn't Trevor Donovan at 40 a little old to still be searching for a permanent life? GAF is certainly a player in these types of movies, but so far Hallmark continues to eat their lunch.

Trevor Donovan is experienced and I've enjoyed him in a lot of movies. I've come to enjoy Jessica Lowndes also. This movie was very disappointing. The acting is surprisingly average.

The story is average with no great highs or lows or surprises. In fact, if you break it down, it follows typical lines. This includes an antagonistic first meeting. Then that melts instantly and they get along great with no transition. There's friends and family all telling the leads to get back out there, repeatedly. There is even the line about "It's a date, no not a date..." (Ugh) There's a ticking clock as far as Drew leaving soon. The conflict occurs explosively, quick and maybe overblown. The ending is predictable.

Something was off with Donovan and Lowndes, just a little. It dampened any chemistry. The dialogue wasn't great. The sets are limited.

What about the singing? Whenever there is a movie with Lowndes I eagerly anticipate her singing. I guess there was one surprise. Donovan did the singing. He was decent in a country sort of way.

This is another totally family safe, family friendly movie. It's not bad, but it wasn't what expected with these leads. It's still a little better than many I've seen on this network with lesser known stars, so I guess it's watchable.

Orange

The best way to watch this movie is on an old black and white tv so you don't get a two hour overdose of orange. From the start there was too much autumn decorating inside and outside The fast forward button helps get through this very routine movie which has the low point at the proper time. From there is has the things working out for the happy ending in the usual last few minutes. The use of the mute button can help get through the music and very fake dancing. The whole fishing pond scene looked like a picture background on a stage set. With nothing moving in the background of the fishing scene it looked like they turned on a fan to make the close plants move a little to end the scene. This is one to write down the title for the don't watch again note book. . .

Distracted.by the overboard of leave.decor

I have never been so distracted by a movie set's decor as with this movie. The movie was actually.good, but all I kept saying was, who in the world was.the set Director.

Not sure how to gently put it, but it was so gawdy, it took away from the movie...so.glad I was not.the only.one distracted.by the horrible.sets.

There were.leaves and.lights in the Living room, bedroom, the new apartment, front.of.the house, side of the house, festival, everywhere. It made it look like a low budget movie. The set Director just said, I'll buy all these leaves in bulk and use it all Through the movie.

You should.re.do it.

Leaf me Alone!

This one was actually produced by GAF, not acquired from an independent studio. So we have shirts buttoned up to the top with no troublesome decolletage or hints that two adults might be having extra marital sex, or relationships based of deceit and lies that generated so much unhappiness and feelings of betrayal in some of their loyal viewership. We had meal time prayer, references to faith and God and blessings. And, by Golly, we had leaves.

I have never seen so many fake decorative leaves in all of my life. Leaves of every shade of orange or red imaginable. Stringed up everywhere. Twinkling. On the eaves, on the window sills, wound around fence posts, gates, rails, in wreaths, pasted to walls (indoor and outdoor), on tables and every other surface. Even at the school, the barn, and in every room. It was hilarious. GAF must have raided every Hobby Lobby in Canada. I can only imagine the behind the scenes convos that broke out between the professional set decorators and the powers that be.

MORE leaves??!!! But....

YES! YES! YES! MORE MORE MORE!

But this is an Apple Orchard! How about a few Apples?

NO! Apples don't say Fall, Autumn or Harvest! Our viewers need more leaves, not more Apples!

I think the final autumn overload was the revenge of the Set Decorators.

It's Worthy of a 10

As with all of Trevor's movies, this one did not disappoint. He has the experience and presence needed to carry a film like this, and I always enjoy everyone with whom he works. You can see there's a clear dynamic when it all finally comes together.

And the chemistry with Trevor and Lowndes, I thought, was I spot on. Just the way they looked at each other made me have to realize that this acting, not real life. In other words, as much as this is fantasy it came off as real many times. As for the storyline. It's romance, and I expected it to be romance.

I thought there was an extra added bonus when Trevor did a song. And I am certain that if he put together a mainstream country act he could take it on the road. And then headline in Nashville. (You really need to do this Trevor.)

I think the only two things that bothered me were, one, the low-end sets. They looked as if someone's grandmother did them in that cheap folksy way. But I won't blame the cast or the story for that. And honestly, I did get beyond the cheap sets eventually once you get into the story and the way it is executed.

I guess the other thing that bothered me was the way the movie was promoted at times. There was this odd little group of fans on one social media platform trying to promote. Just odd. With films like this and a headliner like Trevor, all you really need IS Trevor. You don't need any other interference unless it is subtle and tasteful.

I would recommend it to anyone who loves to escape into the world of romance. You won't be disappointed.

Wow. Over-the-top autumn is here...

There is not a town in the world - especially a small town - that decorates every single room in every single building and home with identicle garish leaf garlands. Even the GYM at the middle school? Get real. It was like the Stepford town - all the homes and buildings - inside and out - had the exact same decorations. Talk about distracting. But then, maybe the decor was meant to be distracting - so people weren't paying attention to the dialogue. The script was juvenile at best. "You like her", "No, I dont", "Yeah, you like her", No, I am leaving", "You like her"... Seriously? An hour and 45 minutes into the movie and two people STILL had to tell him he liked her. Absolutely no relationship development or character development. Just a bunch of people acting like 12-year olds teasing the young couple about how much they like each other - and they sisnt believe it. Every actor, including Donovan and Lowndes, were wooden and sounded like they were reading off a teleprompter as they were acting each scene. The parents were the most relaxed of ALL the actors, and the only ones who seemed comfortable acting together. This was hard to watch, because there was no chemistry with any of the actors except the actors that played the parents. The last scene of the movie was the only part of the movie that the lead actors weren't stuttering - and I think that's because they were kissing instead of talking for part of that scene. This was a one-time, awkward watch. Hoping the Christmas movies are better...

Could have been good . . .

I've continued to watch movies I really didn't care for until the end but making it halfway through this one was more than enough for me. The over-the-top garish fall decor was too distracting as was some of the background music playing while actors were having a conversation. I'm not sure who in their right mind would have approved the set decor in this movie. Note to the decorating and props departments: less is more.

I've seen the lead actors in other movies and enjoyed them so maybe it was just the script because I found their acting to be very lacklustre. Or maybe their performances were just overshadowed by all the fake fall decorations.

Heartwarming Harvest Movie

Enjoyed the storyline of this movie! This movie captures multi-generational issues within a soild family with grandfather, mother and father, and adult children. The movie incorporates delicate issues of romance --> challenges of getting oneself back into the dating world as a thirty-something and as an older adult. Work related challenges are also incorportated into the movie and that is also multi-generational. I love that although the main storyline is front and center, the sideline situations are weaved well into the main story. The fall decor throughout the movie is well-done and tasteful, without the "overkill" that some Christmas movies have. The Lord is acknowledged and incorporated at key points, which makes the movie one to watch for learning about how God works in tlife, if you choose to let Him be part. EXCELLENT! REFRESHING!! TOP TALENT!! The cast is outstanding...

Trevor Donovan is adorable

Alright, so I had a little free time and decided to watch "A Harvest Homecoming" with Trevor Donovan in the lead. Here's my take on it. The plot's not reinventing the wheel here. We've got a small-town setting, where people are as close-knit as the stitches on a handmade quilt. The story revolves around the annual harvest festival, which is facing potential cancellation. Enter Trevor Donovan's character, who's back in town after a long time, with memories and old feelings resurfacing. Perfectly Cast

Trevor's singing talent. It was a delightful surprise! Trevor Donovan has always been a versatile actor, but his musical skills added a whole new layer to his talent. His performance struck a chord with me, quite literally. His singing voice was like a sweet melody, and it was a genuine treat to witness his musical side. It's safe to say that his multifaceted abilities make him a standout in the GFam family. A Harvest Homecoming was such a joy to watch! The cast was spot-on, and I couldn't have asked for a better ensemble. It made the movie feel so authentic and heartwarming. Truly a delightful experience!

I want to move to Chesnut Hallow

I hope Trevor leads more movies, and sings again in more, and maybe dance in one since he did so good in Dancing with the Stars. I particularly enjoyed Drew as a teacher and his interactions with his student Aiden. I know Trevor has Team Upstanders anti-bullying program and it was very nice to see a small nod to it in this movie. Granpa added a nice touch of humor, we can see where Drew got his humor from. I love the bond between Drew and Della, it was a nice brother and sister relationship. The setting was very colorful and totally made it feel like autumn. Also, I gotta say, I vote for Trevor to keep wearing tight fitting shirts in every movie! :-)

The movie is really well-made. The scenery is beautiful, and the acting is good. Trevor Donovan and Lowndes have great chemistry together. They make a believable couple.

I also liked the message of the movie. It's about following your dreams and being surrounded by people who love you. It's also about the importance of family and community.

A heartwarming family-friendly romantic movie with a straightforward plot

If you enjoy uplifting family-friendly movies with a simple romantic plotline, then you will love this movie. I certainly loved the movie, although I think I would have loved it even more if there were more twists and turns/conflicts in the plotline and more depth to the characters. My rating is 8/10.

"A Harvest Homecoming" is about a man (Drew) who temporarily returns to his small hometown to take on the job of a substitute teacher. Drew's parents own an orchard and his sister is also living at home with their parents without a specific plan in her life. In Drew's class, there is a 12 year old boy (Aiden), and the movie is centred on the romantic relationship that develops between Drew and Aiden's (single) mom (Lainie) as well the bond between Drew and Aiden. (Aiden and Lainie moved to the town at the same time that Drew moved back.) However, there are also minor plot lines involving side characters like Drew's grandfather, Drew's best friend, Drew's sister and Drew's parents. The movie is set over two weeks, but a lot does happen and progress in this time, so it feels more like two months.

The movie is absolutely uncontroversial and it is suitable for all ages. The romance is very tame and the plot is extremely family-friendly centering around the experiences of a diverse range of characters from Drew's grandfather, to school-aged children, and everything in between. You definitely feel happy and positive watching the movie. Although God is mentioned a few times, it is certainly not preachy, and the messages are positive referring to "God's plan" (how small random events lead to amazing moments and relationships) and "the future is God's delegation and not for us to worry about". I enjoy these sorts of positive messages although I am not religious myself. The romance in the movie is very sweet and the characters are kind and happy.

The main criticism I have of the movie is that the plot is simple and pedestrian. I wouldn't say there are a lot of twists and turns - all of the characters are happy and have excellent relationships with each other. The odd conflict between characters or worry of one character is usually minor and quickly taken care of in a simple way. The character development is also somewhat surface level, and given the movie is 85 minutes long, I think there could have been much more depth to the characters (or even at least more depth to one or two main characters like the romantic leads). I personally still loved the movie, but I can understand criticisms of the movie along these lines by other reviewers.

A lot of reviewers commented negatively on the use of Fall decor in the set design of every scene. I personally don't have an issue with this and I don't think it detracts from the plot because you get used to it and it does give the movie a unique feel/theme. It is unusual to see Fall leaves adorned in the corners of bedrooms and classrooms and a lot of orange colors/themes in general, but I don't see this as a bad thing.

In conclusion, I really enjoyed the movie because I love heartwarming family-friendly romantic stories with a simple plotline and a happy ending. If this describes you, then I highly recommend this movie. The best part is it is free to watch on YouTube! (The producers have legally made it freely available and it currently has 450k views after about 2 months.)
